President Obama pulls a Barbara Streisand?

Look, I am sure that he *means* well.

That’s a reference to Ms. Streisand’s classic mistake of using a cool-sounding Shakespeare ‘quote’ that she apparently found on the Internet without checking it to see whether it was, in fact, correct.  Which it wasn’t; and that particular example is probably a major reason why Ms. Streisand has done us all the favor of not airing out her political opinions lately.  Personally, I’m grateful.

But I digress.

At any rate, President Obama, while making what was apparently a rather lackluster rally speech* for his health care debacle, used this ‘Lincoln’ quote:

I have the great pleasure of having a really nice library at the White House. And I was tooling through some of the writings of some previous Presidents and I came upon this quote by Abraham Lincoln: “I am not bound to win, but I’m bound to be true. I’m not bound to succeed, but I’m bound to live up to what light I have.”

…which, as NRO Corner notes, is actually listed here as being incorrect.

Of course, this should be easy to check: all the President has to do is tell us what book he got it out of. Although I should note that Brainy Quote won’t count

Anyone who trusts him is a fool.

This guy is the biggest pseudo-intellectual in government

A temporary, part-time Constitutional professor at U Chicago, yet he published nothing. We can’t even get access to so much as a school thesis, much less his grades. I’d love to get the opportunity to examine something we know he has written since “Dreams of My Father” has been purportedly ghostwritten by Bill Ayers. Get him off the prompter and he sounds like a bumbling fool. This guy is such a fraud.

I’m a banned Democrat who came here to promote the idea that Republicans are racists for disliking Barack Obama.

A good reporter would retort with another Lincoln quote

From those in your diary, such as any of the famous “Cannot quotes”. Obama would not be so fond of those, I believe. Please scroll up and read them all.

– A true evolutionist would let endangered species die off. Think about it.
– The sign outside the courthouse said no signs allowed. So I took it down.
– Atlas Shrugged is now on the non-fiction aisle at Amazon.

And to be clear, and not to pull a Barbra, even thought Lincoln may

not have said the “Cannot Quotes”, it does not make the statements themselves any less true.

Of course it affects the statements' credibility!

If Obama intended the words to stand on their own, he need only have not attributed them to one of our most revered Presidents.

In assigning them to Lincoln, falsely, he attempts to invoke Lincoln’s legacy – the same effect as the “appeal to authority” logical fallacy. Presidents have nearly unlimited resources in vetting a speech, far more than the average speaker who we would hold to a higher standard. He had to know this was not a Lincoln quote.

I suppose it might be argued he is just too dumb to be responsible for whatever nonsense comes out of his mouth, but wasn’t this straight off the Teleprompter?

How about "you can fool all of the people some of the time..."

I wasn't his fault

It was his teleprompter that made the mistake. Big O was just passing the words along. As usual.

Hey, maybe we have found a career for Obama after he gets booted from office in 2012. He reads teleprompters with ease, he looks well groomed (or “clean” as Joe Biden called him), he’s completely empty-headed on facts, long on left-wing bias, and enjoys making boatloads of money for doing nothing (like not writing his own books)….. I think we’ve found the next host of the CBS Evening News!

Standard-bearer for grouchy curmudgeonry since, oh, 1975 or so.

It's not that he can't quote Lincoln that bothers me...

It’s that he seems to be channeling Marx that scares me a whole lot more.
