FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Greg Farrell 1, WaPo Ombudsman 0.

Scott over at Power Line has been all over the latest attempts to backtrack/bait-and-switch allegations that racial epithets were hurled at African-American Congressmen after the passage of the health care debacle (see here and here).  The short version is that the story has changed several times, thanks to all that pesky video evidence (and lack of video evidence); but the new versions are not notably more accurate than the first ones.  To give just one example, the AP is reporting Heath Shuler’s corroborating the basic fact of the story… except that he’s not (H/T: Instapundit).  All of this is background to the aforementioned Farrell’s entertaining discussion with the WaPo ombudsman (found here, over this report).  The latter does not come off favorably in the exchange, particularly when Farrell points out that yes, actually, the alleged location of the incident has changed as evidence contradicting it was brought forward.

There is a brutal truth here: nobody in the media wants to be the one to come out and say that John Lewis, a respected Democratic Congressman – one who took a beating for the Civil Rights movement – is a race-baiting liar.  That’s because nobody in the media really wants to believe that a respected Democratic Congressman is a race-baiting liar.  And I sympathize, really.  After all, when I heard that there was credible evidence that Duke Cunningham was taking defense kickbacks in a time of war, I didn’t want to believe that a respected Republican Congressman and war hero was a war-profiteering near-seditionist.

But I didn’t let that stop me from facing reality.  I suggest that Congressman Lewis’ defenders either come up with some actual proof to justify their beliefs, or else re-examine them.

That is why they invented Moral Relativism. If you hold no values, you cannot betray those values.

    It is a win-win!

I don’t believe that he has ever made a public statement regarding this issue. Others, such as Andre Carson, have taken it upon themselves to speak on Lewis’ behalf. If Lewis is to be blamed at all, it is for his sin of omission, rather than for his sin of commission. That sin rests upon the shoulders of the true perpetrators of the fraud, Carson among them.
If Lewis didn’t hear anyone shouting racial epithets, then he should say so, and lay the matter to rest. If he does not speak out, we may assume that he gives tacit approval to being exploited, and is therefore among the guilty.

The S/M crowd that is the Democrat party and it’s band of rabid supporters need something to live for. Their entire self image, their psyche, is constructed on tearing other people down. there is nothing else.

is never going to mumble a clarification. Maybe he should come back to his district for Freaknik this weekend for a refresher course in racial epithets and bad behavior.

If I’m a significant public figure, and people are running around quoting me with things I did not say, particularly if I’m a prominent black civil rights figure and they’re saying I have accused a bunch of people of racist things they did not do, then I have the absolute moral obligation to clear it up publicly and quickly.

The fact that he HAS NOT DONE SO is very much blame-worthy, as he has allowed a whole bunch of innocent people to have their reputations tarnished.

I think he said what’s been attributed to him. There is no reason to think otherwise.

‘Don’t blame John Lewis…yet’. The possibility does exist the man is totally out of the loop. His staff couild be keeping him in the dark about what is being said in his name. I confidently assert that Mr. Lewis believes, since he is the Grand Old Man of the Black Caucus, his position exempts him from involvement in tactical details. He believes himself to be above the fray.
That being said, he has very little time left before his reputation declines from Civil Rights Hero to Just Another Race Hustler.

That’s not the dumbest thing I’ve ever read, but it’s certainly way up there.

How long has this story been out there? More than an hour? If so, John Lewis is a pathetic race hustler. He has used up his time.

as is politeness. Polite disagreement is a hallmark of this website. Please save your insults for our common adversaries.

There’s no reason to denigrate the S&M crowd by comparing them to the Democratic Party. Pretty much all serious S&M relationships are based on trust, and nobody’s been able to trust the Democratic Party any time in our lifetimes.

Especially when dealing with the Party of Death and Enemies of the United States.

The Black Caucus counts as both.

And the paragraph above gives you two in the hallmark of really stupid comments.
