FDA hassling Amish over raw milk.

Interstate commerce strikes again!

There is no such thing as a libertarian Democrat.

“They came in the dark, shining bright flashlights while my family was asleep, keeping me from milking my cows, from my family, from breakfast with my family and from our morning devotions, and alarming my children enough so that the first question they asked my wife was, ‘Is Daddy going to jail?’”

That’s how Amish farmer Dan Allgyer described an early morning visit last week from two FDA agents, two U.S. Marshals, and a Pennsylvania state trooper. Apparently, investigating a single farmer for possibly trafficking raw milk across state lines requires a show of force.

(via The DC Trawler) Pretty much by definition. You can have libertarian Republicans – and, as libertarians are no doubt eager to point out, you can certainly have hypocritical ‘libertarian’ Republicans – but the Democrats are a liberal-run political party these days, and liberals like to expand the state. That’s what liberals do. This can be disconcerting to counter-culture types that are not on the Left’s list of protected lifestyle choices.

Mind you, if you are on the list then the Democrats will be happy to pursue policies that mandate that everybody else endorse said lifestyle choices, too. Which I suppose sounds like a decent deal, until one realizes that a) there’s a hierarchy of protected groups and b) all groups on it are expected to enthusiastically support the Democrats in everything, no matter how well or poorly said groups are treated. Which is why the raw milk people get such a raw deal; the organic food movement is quite low on the pyramid, and government bureaucrats are at the apex of it*. With that kind of power imbalance, it’s a miracle that Mr. Allgyer didn’t get arrested…

they are insured…. but not everyone
must prove they are a citizen.”

These groups value the same things as anyone who pioneered the West

Their ideology may seem kooky, but they do practice freedom and independence in it’s purest form. I have a lot of respect for these people. The kookiness has always been their from day one. I’m not a comformist myself. What they have to say about the world, I just smile at. But what they have to say about food, I listen to them quite closely.
Most of our foodstuffs are based on corn. Corn syrup and high fructose cornsyrup are very bad for the bodies sugar levels (Glycemic level?) If you care about education, you will care about this. Their ability to pay attention in class, is greatly affected by sugar levels. One in three kids is estimated to get diabetes, many while still in childhood.
Or in healthcare. The commerce clause was invoked in a trial about a guy raising his own wheat, to feed to his animals, which he would sell on the open market. The courts shut him down. This case will figure strongly in the AG’s suit against the federal government against the federal mandate for individuals to purchase healthcare.
O every trip I took outside the city on a hot day, I would stop at a fruit stand and buy a pressed apple cider. It wouldn’t be pasturized or anything. It would be considered by the Feds as “raw”. I would call it fresh. Their was a single incident of E-Coli, and the Feds shut it down. It is not about food safety, it is about control. They want to eliminate every last vestige of freedom, and force all commerce through the National legislature.
Sorry if I am long here, but this issue has deep cultural roots. and I’m having a hard time gathering my thoughts. It’s kinda like if they took the beer out of the pubs in Boston.
