FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Sen. DeMint not to run in 2016?

(Via Hot Air Headlines) At least, that’s what he’s telling the National Journal:

NJ What is your ambition?

DeMINT My hope is to elect five or 10 more solid conservatives and go home and rock on my front porch.

NJ This is your last term?

DeMINT Yeah. It was not a campaign promise; but that is my plan, that the election last year was my last one. It has always been my plan not to serve more than two terms.

This will disappoint a bunch of people – and probably please a bunch of other people; and in both cases I’d say ‘unreasonably.’ The Republic is larger than any man, including Senator DeMint (which I believe is a statement that he’d be the first to agree with): we’re not going to be doomed because the Senator takes the completely rational view that twelve years in Dizzy City is enough, or more than enough*. The real response here is to make sure ahead of time that, when Sen. DeMint (or any other conservative politician) resigns, there’s a suitable replacement that’s up and ready to go. Or, better yet, a whole slew of replacements.

Put another way: to quote Joe Hill (with malice aforethought), “Don’t mourn me, boys: organize.”

Moe Lane (crosspost)

PS: Senator DeMint has a book out, if you’re into that sort of thing: The Great American Awakening: Two Years that Changed America, Washington, and Me.

*And if we were going to be so doomed, then we’d be doomed anyway – so we might as well get it over with early.

DeMint not running will be a huge blow for Conservatives and the Tea Party.

While he has certainly earned his rest after fighting so hard for us, we have so few true Conservatives in DC that he will be sorely missed.

how about forcing the Senate to produce a budget. The great strategic political issue in all of the debt/ budget debate is Harry Reid’s ability to protect all of the Dem Senators who are up for reelection from taking tough votes on the budget or debt. That can only happen with the assistance of the Republicans in the Senate who also must want to duck tough votes.

Shut down the Senate until it passes a budget! The Republicans could simply say no business will be done until the Senate complies with it’s legal and Constitutional duty to produce a budget. Mitch McConnell has left the House majority hanging and decreased the opportunity for a Republican Senate in 2012. That has to be to also protect Republicans up for reelection from making tough votes.

There have been stories that Johnson and Sessions would try to force something but nothing ever happens.

That electing of 5-10 good, solid conservatives is key.

Thank you DeMint for saying it this far in advance. Get the bench lined up and let’s get another DeMint conservative in that seat.

On second thought, I’d like to see Tim or someone primary Sen Lindsey first then we get another conservative for DeMint’s seat.
