FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

So, here we are at the CNN/Heritage/AEI Debate.

Soren and I are here to cover the debate and the post-debate ‘spin.’ The debate will be at 8PM; it’s hosted by CNN, Heritage, and AEI, and will focus on national security and foreign policy. And now, a look at the glory that is a Press File Center:

(Or… not)

I know: fascinating. This is going into diaries; most of my commentary will be via Twitter. Also, I’d like to apologize in advance to the Perry campaign, as he’s had his best debates when I wasn’t covering them. I shudder at the thought of what’s likely to happen tonight, when I’m actually attending.

but the same guy that wilts under pressure, which is is now being put under. Fleitcher says that he has known Newt for years.

  • Common_Cents

    hmmm….Perry should then endorse Newt.

  • federalfarmer1

    On suicide watch.

Maybe Perry could get a job as newts interior secretary. Or maybe energy.

  • 1bunny

like Rove etc so he does not want Perry to succeed.

  • Scope

even though they harbored Bin Laden for 6 years. She said that Perry was naive to want to zero our tax payer dollars in that region.

  • Scope

on our troop levels when he just a week or so ago agreed that we should get out a month after Obama proposed. Flop flop.

  • Scope

What an arrogant ass. And then he says nothing.

  • Scope

and there’s nothing else to say beyond that.

  • Scope

has been very much a part of the security of the Pakistan nukes? They are there, but she talks as though they are free floating among the worst.

For someone who has been such a strong supporter of Isreal, he is vasciliating.

Ron Paul is on a roll again.

conducive to attack by Israel. The mission would not be clear.

  • bzip

So far Perry is doing good and Bachmann was wrong. No money to foreign aid till those countries make a case for it, period! That isn’t naive, it is wisdom and that is how to deal and negotiate with countries. That is just plain smart.

  • Scope

Now Bachmann is also agreeing with Perry’s energy plan.

  • Scope

Wait until the debate is over before you do any jinxing.

  • Scope

Good lord this guy has no clue.

    Now Romney states no clue.

    Now Ron Paul is clueless.

    This is funny.

  • changeforrickperry

Just got finished cleaning up the kitchen. Can someone give
me a quick recap of the first hour? Thank you!

  • Scope

rather than piggy backing on them now.

  • quad4x4

you just have to get a life, vist Iran, India, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Japan, Kenya and south america countries, and etc., then you might just learn something to compare this counnry’s problems with the world problems…

IF THAT fails, try living in Cuba or Venz. ( I never went to the later) if that is your cup of tea. Your view seems to need a sea change.

  • bzip

Perry has done excellent in all i=his answers and articulating them tonight.

Perry was right about the foreign aid, no aid let countries make their case.
Newt appears to like Perry’s energy plan.
Perry was strong on immigration answers, secure the border first and how he would do it.
Perry was right on with Syria with no-fly zone as “one” of the options but included all options and how it really deals with Iran.
Perry has been very strong in his message tonight.

To me the winner tonight was:
    Perry
    Newt (some what mixed though)
Bachmann (she was strong in some areas but came off as whining too much and wrong in some areas – overall strong).
    Romney

    Loser:
    Ron Paul
Herman Cain, again came off as no substance

I only hope people give Perry a second look

  • seth90212

He could hardly string a couple of sentences together. I actually felt sorry for him as he tried to articulate his thoughts. Cain didn’t get a lot of time but at least he didn’t embarrass himself.

  • Scope

from my comment about Cain’s comment. Good to know you read minds and hearts, and anything about anyone on the internet. Get lost.

  • bzip

That is a joke, what planet did you come from anyways.

  • Scope

staying on message, and not flip flopping, Perry won hands down.

Ha, Gingrich just said on CNN that the election will come down between him and Romney. This guy’s ego never gets far away from him does it?

  • federalfarmer1

But I think huntsman did well, as did Newt. Romney did okay. Bachmann acted like a serious candidate for the first time. Cain disappeared. Santorum has no reason t be up there. Paul gave the most despicable answer ever, regarding the harmlessness of the taliban. He suggested they only want us out of theory country. This is the same taliban that harbored osama and the 9 11 terrorists. He should have been booed

  • changeforrickperry

Is that Perry did a good job. He’s far from dead yet!

But now, a challenge to all RS members who were ready to string Perry up by his thumbs on September 22: if The Newt’s immigration answer was not as damaging to Newt as Perry’s was to himself, then please explain WHY.

  • Scope

that he would pull our troops out from Afghanistan a month later than Obama’s stated date. Now he schools Huntsman on wanting to pull the troops out, even though Huntsman didn’t name a date.

  • Scope

was one of the first comments from CNN after the debate. They called it as bad as Perry’s heartless statement. They went back to Perry right after that, and he stayed on the message about closing the border, and didn’t touch it with a 20 foot poll.

  • ceili_dancer

All positions of Romney come with an expiration date, all of them.

  • seth90212

than saying he won. You really think Perry beat Romney, Gingrich, Huntsman, Bachman, Santorum or even Paul (from left field on some issues but argued well).

Perry may have beaten Cain simply by virtue of the fact that Cain didn’t say much. But I can’t think of anyone else on the stage that didn’t do better than Perry. Being able to articulate your thoughts in a clear and linear fashion without mumbling and abandoning sentences is critical in debating. Perry just doesn’t have it. He does sound better in one-on-one interviews, but on a debate stage he’s a disaster.

  • avagreen

You’re just making yourself look foolish with comments like you just made.

    Agree: what planet?

How to create jobs = build up energy.

How to decrease dependence upon the ME = build up energy.

One shot gave Perry peering at someone who was borrowing his plan to claim as their own by their comments (w/o giving him credit).

  • sunshinek67

But what you don’t understand is that his record stands on it’s own, all by itself. The fact that he even shows up to the debate is a win-win situation~

  • avagreen

plan by leaving out that this was part of the OTHER parts of a comprehensive plan.

Romney co-opted this as his own……can’t remember if he agreed with Perry who had made the statement earlier (as one of his first statements).

  • Scope

because you are such a Perry hater it doesn’t matter what he says, you will just lie about it.

  • avagreen

    1) If Perry and Newt have the same immigration plan for the illegals already here (They aren’t going away, Romney skidmyster), they will “lose” with conservatives Blizter said.

2)Implied by the question Blizter kept hounding for an answer: If they are against the humane treatment of illegals that have been here for 25 years with extended families, have broke no laws, have been paying taxes………then both will lose the “liberal”…….that’s the reason for the gotcha question. Either answer would lose both votes.

  • Scope

adopted plans that Perry has already at least talked about, or put on paper. The drilling for oil was particularly evident. There were other ideas as well.

  • avagreen

    Failure.

  • onemovoter

He kept saying something that Perry has already put out there. I kept saying on Twitter every single time, Hey thanks Newt for endorsing Perry’s plan… AGAIN!!

I also annoyed Dick Morris over and over again with those same tweets.

  • Scope

where he criticized Bush. Ha, now he really likes Romney.

  • avagreen

IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY, even if spoken through hypocritical plagiarizing lips. ;)

  • onemovoter

Gingrich stepped into it tonight, but also kept saying the same ideas that Perry has already put out there.

    1. Perry
    2. Gingrich
    3. Santorum

    5. Cain
    6. Bachmann

  • avagreen

    Did you reallly???
    Tell.

  • Scope

That was my same exact observation. Perry at least said what he meant in everyday language. Newt has to dress it up with BS 50cent words, like he is just the smartest guy in the room. I love the fact that the guy with all the ideas actually adopted Perry’s ideas. When he was talking about SS, he even mentioned the Texas Galveston idea. That was already Perry’s idea.

  • superpatriot

Won tonight’s debate. Cain is showing that he’s all business, no foreign policy.

    Romney is king of flip-floppers.

This race will come down to Perry, Romney, and Gingrich.

  • Common_Cents

Newt will be able to adopt some of them, articulate them better and thrash Obama. Perry will be an awesome VP and become President in the future.

  • superpatriot

    or Perry/Newt

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • sunshinek67

already a hit in the blogosphere~

  • avagreen

she kept getting that crazy look in her eyes when she floated off the question to go off into one of her anti-Obama talking points, and then completely mischaracterizing Romney’s statement (can’t remember which now), which he then rebutted with what he’d said, to which she just repeated her WRONG statement again (oi vey! *hitting self on head with fists*)

  • ripusa32110

Newt Gingrich is good at stealing other peoples ideas and then makes it appear like it is his idea. In another debate Gingrich claimed he is for auditing the Federal Reserve when that was Ron Paul’s idea for years. Why shouldn’t Gingrich also claim Perry’s ideas for his own. It is Gingrich’s m.o. after all.

  • sunshinek67

Perry’s experience and Gingrich’s historian/lecture. He would make an excellent VP~

  • avagreen

    NT.

  • avagreen

He’s always done that…….I’d just forgotten the extent. And, how much he’d been accused of that in his power days.

    Again………”CHARACTER FLAW”!

  • sethellis

    Winners:

Bachmann – She is coming off much stronger lately. No stupid comments, and not afraid to call it like she sees it. Most likely to become flavor of the week…again…

Romney: Did not get as much time as he did in the past, but made the most of it. I’m not just saying this as a he won by default sort of thing. He deserved it this time more so than in the past. CNN seemed to be intentionally leaving Romney out of the discussion in order to favor Huntsman and Perry.

    Losers:

Cain – The second debate where Cain has proven he doesn’t have the chops to be top tier.

Gingrich – Just as troublesome as the heartless comment. Even if the base forgives it this time it just opens the door to explore other unpopular positions of his. Bachmann smells blood, and she will go after it with all she’s got to take the base away from Newt.

  • Scope

but I will never agree to Gingrich being in Washington ever again. Besides, Gingrich would never ever accept a second position in anything. I know it isn’t realistic but, my second choice would be Santorum. There I said it. Excellent on foreign policy, excellent on family values, could improve on economic issues where Perry is strong. That would be a complementary ticket.

  • ripusa32110

I thought Gingrich’s comment was just as damaging as Perry’s immigration comment in the past debate and if it isn’t portrayed that way it just proves how the inside the beltway types like Gingrich and don’t like Perry. Save the poor immigrant garbage Mr. Gingrich. You are the last man I want to hear talking about the family considering that if Newt becomes president Calista would be the Third Lady not the First Lady. Save it Newt. Don’t you DARE preach to me about morality or the family.

  • ripusa32110

Gingrich thinks he’s smarter than the rest of the human race. Sounds like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to me.

  • ripusa32110

Newt likes to poach other people’s ideas and claim them as his own. He does it time after time,

  • sunshinek67

Um, call me biased, but that was equivalent to an “oops”, how do you forget what your real name is?

  • windwaker24

Pretty funny! “Oopses” happen to everyone. I was laughing at the Cain “Blitz” moment. That was cute!

  • sunshinek67

    Perry CIC strong
    Gingrich strong
    Romney tired
    Paul nutty
    Cain forgettable
Bachmann great cabinet position awaits her
    Huntsman ?
    Santorum ?

Other points of interest to me, Bachmann attempting to school Perry on Pakistan. He makes clear that ‘zero aid-make your case’ is his policy. What doesn’t she understand about that? MSM picks up “naive” because, well, they don’t want to prop up Perry, in what is without question his best debate thus far. Paul is a GOP candidate fraud, and have no idea why he is allowed to attend these debates, let alone run as a Republican.

One more thing, apparently Bachmann and Fleischer have the same make up artist. Overdone~

  • sunshinek67

These debates, this one particularly rapid fire, are a contest to see who can deliver the American Political Idol performance, leaving the MSM spinning for days in punditocracy. Waiting for those gotcha moments to ridicule candidates gives them something to fill up the air for days (until the next show)~

  • windwaker24

If he doesn’t get the nomination, he should go back to being Governor. He is a good leader and should be using his leadership skills. VPs don’t do much of anything.

  • sunshinek67

He looked tired. Maybe someone will plug him back up tonite for a recharge~

  • Scope

Why be someone who only attends funerals for dignataries in foreign nations, as Fred said in 08, when he is a sitting Governor. God forbid that the O wins again, shiver shiver, Perry could run again in 2016. No worries though, Perry will be the next President.

  • sunshinek67

honestly, I am not that fond of Newt Gingrich. To be perfectly honest, I am old enough to remember his dinosaur record and the controversies. He is a Washington insider, absolutely, in a system that is broken. Perry is right to demand an overhaul, so I am being a bit disingenuous by asserting Gingrich as a competent VP choice as it would be a ticket of conflict, but I don’t want to be too offensive either, should I have to walkback quite a distance if things don’t go right for Perry. Gingrich is a great historian, lecturer, just not a candidate for President. Not the best the GOP has to offer.

  • Scope

RNC chair. No problem. I just don’t want Gingrich anywhere near Washington or the conservative banner.

  • Scope

but how I saw it was that Romney was just keeping to his vanilla talking points so as not to slip up. I think that many others were strong and animated, and that made Romney look all the more unexciting.

  • Scope

Romney referred to the Genocide Convention.

  • heraklios

and didn’t even attempt to answer the question most of the time. Newt, Bachmann and Huntsman were the most solid debaters tonight. Also, Romney has no credibility attacking Newt on immigration plus immigration is one of those issues where many conservatives (including me) disagree with the rote talking points Romney repeats on immigration issues.

  • windwaker24

Romney really gets flustered when challenged…

  • gekster

    genocide Convention

    excerpt:
The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 9 December 1948 as General Assembly Resolution 260. The Convention entered into force on 12 January 1951.[1] It defines genocide in legal terms, and is the culmination of years of campaigning by lawyer Raphael Lemkin. Yaur Auron writes “When Raphael Lemkin coined the word genocide in 1944 he cited the 1915 annihilation of Armenians as a seminal example of genocide”.[2] All participating countries are advised to prevent and punish actions of genocide in war and in peacetime. The number of states that have ratified the convention is currently 140.

  • JSobieski

    http://www.hrweb.org/legal/genocide.html

Unfortunately, statements from Iran talk about future genocide and predict future genocide, but they might not constitute a present incitement to commit genocide.

Like all UN Conventions, the Convention against Genocide is of limited utility.
