Obama for America stiffing Durham, NH for… $30,000. Wait, WHAT?

You'd think that this would be chump change for them.

The very short version: President Barack Obama is scheduled to make a campaign speech on Monday, in the town of Durham, NH. This will cost the town an estimated sixteen to thirty thousand dollars in additional overtime for cops and fire officials and whatnot. The town is taking the position that while they’d be happy to eat the cost for a Presidential visit, a campaign stop by the President is a different story; the town also claims that they’ve asked previous campaigns to foot the bill for overtime/costs. Obama for America has declined to do this, claiming that the Secret Service wants the extra security in place (this is fast becoming OfA’s favorite excuse for bad visuals); the town is now contemplating symbolically dis-inviting the President.  If passed, then hi-jinks will then presumably ensue.

No, really, that was the really short version.

Let’s break this down into several parts. First, the merits… well, how much merit Durham’s claim has depends on how you look at it, and whether the town really has made a distinction between campaign and official stops. It’s also in some ways the most irrelevant part of the problem facing Obama for America right now… and likely to be the one that they myopically fixate upon, bless their hearts. Because the second problem for the Democrats is how this looks. This isn’t 2008. The country doesn’t feel as rich as it did. Particularly since Obama hit Mitt Romney a couple of weeks ago with a campaign ad accusing Mitt Romney of… not wanting to pay for firemen and cops.

Oops.

Anyway, the point here is that a thirty grand overtime bill is not exactly a hill that you’d expect Obama for America to die on; regardless of the relative merits, the optics are sufficiently poor that it’ll probably cost them more than thirty grand’s worth of headaches. It is, in fact, the sort of thing that campaign money is for; making problems go away that might otherwise stomp on the smooth delivery of a campaign’s message. The Obama campaign really should have just smiled tightly, and paid up. Unless… they’re, you know, feeling the pinch these days. To the point where thirty grand looks as much like real money to them as it does to most of the people reading this article.

Which would be… interesting, no?

I usually read & rarely comment, but for this I gotta say…maybe they didn’t want a repeat episode of Kenny’s BBQ. :)

Why is Barry such a cheapskate?

She said unemployment and food stamps stimulate the economy.

It doesn’t seem to be stimulating Obama’s campaign coffers. Then again it doesn’t seem to stimulating the economy either.

Who knew that people without jobs don’t have any spare cash for political campaigns?

    Air Force One there.

What would the Obama Gang do if no one from the town showed up?

… may be in order here. An amount like this can be a big expense for a relatively small town, especially now.

But, consider this: $30k is less than it costs ONE of Obama’s “friends” to attend some of his fund-raising dinners ($38,500/seat.)

Durham has the right idea, not willing to really just come out and say it, but obviously dubious that this is a presidential visit for any real reason other than campaigning, as would be any thinking, informed American. If this occupant of the White House gets re-elected, I’ll be hoping that the Mayan calendar was valid.

No problem, dude. We got it covered. Well, at least one of 0′s donors will cover it. Bet this qualifies as a campaign contribution and has to be disclosed.

Anonymous donor to rescue in N.H.

The conflict over who will pay for President Obama’s visit to Durham, N.H. tomorrow, per the AP:

An anonymous donor has agreed to pay up to $20,000 to cover expenses the town incurs as a result of a visit by President Barack Obama, Town Council Chairman Jay Gooze said Sunday.

The town asked that local expenses for Monday’s Obama campaign stop be covered by the president’s re-election campaign. Durham officials had said that the visit is expected to cost the town an extra $20,000 to $30,000 in overtime payments. Obama is scheduled to speak Monday at Durham’s Oyster River High School.

The Obama campaign had responded to the request by saying that all decisions on security expenses “are exclusively within the control of the appropriate government officials” and that if there were further questions about allocation of the expenses they should be directed to the Secret Service.

On Sunday, Gooze said the town’s request was not motivated by partisan politics and most Durham voters are registered Democrats. Gooze also said the town did not wish to make a national statement about campaign reimbursements.

Town administrator Todd Selig told POLITICO the donor had asked for an itemized list of the expenses and that the money would go straight to the town’s general fund.

UPDATE: One reader raised a question about whether this would need to be an in-kind contribution to the campaign, since the campaign ends up getting some form of benefit. I will update if there’s more information on that front.

Hence a very liberal place. I know because my sister teaches there. Very left wing, as the Chie f of Police says above, so hardly anti-Obama. Maybe just hard up.

It’s really hard to fathom those Lib Prog Regressives who not only plan to vote on this Hugo Chavez wannabee, but who really think he’s been a great POTUS!! I have libturd friends – college grads, ALL! – who really think this way!! Depressing only begins to describe my frustration, confusion and total disdain…

Portsmouth Herald headlines this morning state an “anonymous” donor just kicked in $20,000 so the show will go on.
I was hoping he would stay away. Now he will be polluting the minds of the kids at UNH. Sad, but true.

  • outbackjon

“Due to a highly credible right-wing terrorist threat, President Obama and 72 [paid] supporters were the only ones brave enough to show up here today.”

  • wayneinnh

How does providing services for a campaign visit to the tune of $20,000 not qualify as an in kind donation? Of course, the trial lawyers are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democrat party so there are surely some clever ways to launder the donation.

Polluting the minds of the kids at UNH? UNH is an open sewer, complete with convicted pervert professors. This speech will be nothing more than a continuation what they heard all year in the classrooms.

If there was a parade and no one came would it still be a parade? The same goes here. Okay Obama shows up with his campaign entourage that he does not or cannot pay for. The Secret Service wants all of this extra security. So what?
The mayor just says forget it and not schedule any, I repeat any extra help. If Obama wants extra security he can pay for it. let the city go on with business as usual.

  • gwbramhall

Try not to despair about this. There is a silver lining.
First we have 20G’s wasted early in the election cycle
and second the precident has been set and they’ll
have to be coming up with these kind of payoffs for
the rest of the campaign. Is it possible that the DNC
will bankrupt itself before it does the nation?

  • Lisa Bullock-Hock

Democratic solution to cover costs. Tax Something!!!

  • dodgeone

is the fact that if a Republican had said this to Durham it would of been Headline news about how the Presidents campaign was unwilling to help cover some or all of the cost of his visit.

  • ihateliberals

My Suggestion is for the SS to provide more agents or come up with the money. I don’t care if the town is Poe-Dunk Kansas or NYC budgets are tight and footing the bill for a Campaign security isn’t in most of these budgets.
