The Maryland (and other States) Primary Results Open Thread.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | April 3rd at 08:30 PM |
Maryland’s getting pride of place because it’s a) where I live and b) has actual, non-Presidential primaries tonight. Presidential primary results here: Maryland’s state results are going to be… here, I guess. Looks like (as of 8:30 PM) Romney won DC & MD; Dan Bongino is ahead in the MD-SEN nomination; and the may-not-recognize-her-luck Nancy Jacobs is ahead in the absolutely vital* MD-02 race. RS at CPAC: Dan Bongino (R CAND, MD-SEN PRI).
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | February 11th at 08:08 PM |
One of the interesting things about CPAC is, of course, that you can meet a whole lot of different candidates. Below was my conversation with Dan Bongino, who is a former US Secret Service agent now running for Senate in Maryland against Ben Cardin – and if you don’t remember who Ben Cardin is, don’t worry. Cardin’s an amazingly generic Senator who, on his good | Read More »
Maryland redistricting map to get Voter Rights Act challenge.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | October 25th at 10:30 AM |
So… the Maryland redistricting map was revealed and signed into law recently, and – shock! Surprise! – the Democratic-controlled legislature managed to hack into one of the two Republican seats. The short version: they went into Roscoe Bartlett’s MD-06, switched out a bunch of districts to make it more competitive, and then put central Maryland into the redistricting blender and hit ‘puree.’ Because, well, central | Read More »
Maryland planning more stealth tax hikes on poor?
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | October 11th at 12:30 PM |
In a socially-acceptable way, of course: ie, via another hike in the tax on tobacco. The “Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative” – a name whose hint of subtle menace should make small-government types involuntarily shiver – looking to raise it by a buck a pack, because… well, pretty much because they want people to quit smoking, and taxing it through the ceiling is supposed to accomplish | Read More »
Martin O’Malley (D, MD) pushing for Amazon tax.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | July 5th at 11:30 AM |
(Full disclosure: I am an Amazon.com Affiliate for Maryland.) It’s still in the early stages – the Governor has started the paperwork process and Comptroller for Maryland Peter Franchot supports the idea – but the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, and goodness knows that the Democrats keep doing precisely that when it comes | Read More »
Teamsters steamroller United Food & Commercial Workers.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | April 18th at 07:00 PM |
Union solidarity is a myth. David Freddoso has the details: essentially, the Teamsters and the UFCW are at cross-purposes when it comes to the Giant supermarket chain here in DC. The Teamsters are angry at Giant because Giant parent company Royal Ahold is closing a Teamsters-controlled facility in Jessup, Maryland, in favor of a non-union one in Pennsylvania*. This will be happening, and the real | Read More »
Democratic legislators flee… SAME-SEX MARRIAGE bill? [Fixed.]
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | March 4th at 10:24 AM |
In Maryland? Apparently. Maryland has been trying to pass a same-sex marriage (SSM) bill for years – the last time they tried, its failure was a genuine shock to SSM supporters – and it did look like the latest version (HB 55, the “Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act”) would pass once it made it through the MD Senate (barely) last week. But before | Read More »
CPAC 2011: Alex Mooney.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | February 13th at 12:00 PM |
Alex is the current chair of the Maryland GOP, and we talked for a bit on how to go about the work in a Blue State. Answer, of course: start from the bottom and work your way up. The Maryland GOP site is here. Moe Lane (crosspost)
WaPo: Top O’Malley (D, MD) official ordered document suppression.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | September 28th at 02:30 PM |
[UPDATE]: Red Maryland is also all over this story: see here and here for parts 1 and 2. (H/T: Jim Geraghty) Background: back in August, the state of Maryland inadvertently put up on its website something that everybody all already knew; which is to say, a report indicating that Maryland’s economy is horrible (if better than the national average, mostly thanks to its proximity to | Read More »
Meet Eric Wargotz (R CAND, MD-SEN).
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | September 8th at 09:00 PM |
Eric is one of the candidates running in next week’s primary: he’s the one who did the (accurate) Barbara Mikulski as ‘Political Insidersaurus‘ campaign ad recently. We interviewed him yesterday on the primary and the race: Eric’s site is here, and his Political Insidersaurus site is here. Moe Lane Crossposted to Moe Lane.
Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D, MD) and the imaginary Berwick confirmation hearings.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | July 16th at 02:00 PM |
I may need to walk back on my scorn of Rep. Jackson-Lee’s praise of the non-existent relationship between the non-existent nations of North and South Vietnam. If this video below is any indication, then there’s a fairly nasty virus going around Capitol Hill that turns Democratic legislators into memory-impaired, babbling zombies. Yes, even worse than usual. Yes, you remember correctly: in point of fact Donald | Read More »
Meet Charles Lollar (R CAND, MD-05).
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | July 1st at 08:30 PM |
Charles was interviewed generally last year here at RedState: he’s now officially running to overturn Steny Hoyer in MD-05, and he’s pretty determined about it: Charles’ site is here. Moe Lane Crossposted to Moe Lane.
The Breakdown of Montgomery[*] County.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | June 1st at 08:35 AM |
The Washington Post can be amusing, sometimes. In this article (via Instapundit) they provide a comparison of two counties – Montgomery County in Maryland, and Fairfax County in Virginia – to the former’s distinct disadvantage. The short version: Montgomery County is stuck with an elected Democratic leadership that is beholden to public sector unions*, spends in a fashion that insults drunken sailors, and… actually, those | Read More »
So, there’s this fake Governor O’Malley (D-MD) site…

…found here, and it’s already earning its corn: Surrounded once again by stupid people Why the h[*]ll am I surrounded by stupid people???!!!! Why have we been running ads and doing polls that tell people that Ehrlich is a lobbyist, only to have dumb[*]ss Travis Tazelaar tell the Baltimore Sun that we have no evidence that Ehrlich has been lobbying? It’s official: Charles Lollar is running for MD-05.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | October 5th at 02:18 PM |
Steny Hoyer’s* seat. I talked with Charles back in August, back when it was merely very, very likely that Lollar was running; I liked what I heard. He’s running as a strong conservative, with an emphasis on fiscal responsibility – but without ignoring the social issues, either. Below is video from his speech to the Cecil County Tea Party on the Fourth of July: Charles | Read More »
Steny Hoyer goes off-message on health care rationing.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | August 21st at 02:33 PM |
Assuming that there’s any sort of on-message at this point. Via Hot Air, here’s the latest cloud of ink from a Democrat perhaps worried about the way things are going: Hoyer (D-Md.) emphasized his support for a public option in a teleconference call with reporters, but also said he wants to ensure Congress sends a bill to the president. “I’m for a public option, but | Read More »

Working with Disneyland to create a music/dance number with a theme, rehearsals, and advance planning: Using your position as a state legislator to acquire scarce city resources for your proposal – which includes the police threatening to make a false arrest of your fiancee: Del. My talk with Charles Lollar (R-Cand, MD-05?).
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | August 10th at 07:10 PM |
I had the opportunity to speak with Charles Lollar, Charles County (Maryland) Republican Central Committee Chairman, in a phone interview last week. Below are some of the things that we discussed. First off, a bit of background: Charles Lollar is a business owner and member of the Marine Corps Reserve who has been spending the last few years promoting things like the Taxpayers’ Bill of | Read More »
Maryland millionaires’ massive migration.
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | May 27th at 08:16 AM |
There is a glaring inaccuracy in the linked WSJ article on vanishing Maryland millionaires. Essentially, It is not “a two-minute drill in soak-the-rich economics:” Maryland couldn’t balance its budget last year, so the state tried to close the shortfall by fleecing the wealthy. Politicians in Annapolis created a millionaire tax bracket, raising the top marginal income-tax rate to 6.25%. And because cities such as Baltimore | Read More »
Buzz about Charles Lollar for MD Governor?
By: Moe Lane (Diary) | May 22nd at 09:25 AM |
Charles Lollar is the chairman of the Republican Party’s Charles County Central Committee in Maryland. Businessman, major in the Marine Reserve (served in Kosovo), involved in the Tea Party movement: he’s not yet declared for next year’s gubernatorial race, but his name keeps coming up in local discussions. There’s also now a Draft Charles Lollar site. Generally, this guy sounds like he’d be at least | Read More »
