MEMBER DIARY

GOP leaders says schools know best – parents should shut up..

and take a back seat because they, the professional educators, are smarter and know better than parents do.

**** Post revised due to my poor grammar and overly emotional rant *******

I agree with him in a sense, because professional educators do know more about teaching children than non-professional educators do, however, that doesn’t mean elected school board members should ignore parents concerns or brush them off as irrelevant simply because they don’t come from the professionals. Like it or not, the people who know their children best and who love them the most, are their parents.

The issue which brought about his comments was an agenda item discussing giving parents a choice in how their children are taught mathematics. My previous post discussing the curriculum and efforts by parents to be given a choice can be found here.

The meeting was rather long, it went until well after midnight. Most of the speakers were quite polite, although sometimes a bit heated. One speaker, who opposes to idea of giving parents a choice and is employed by the county, spoke forcefully that the professional educators, such as herself, ought to make the decisions regarding curriculum and parents should be quiet because they don’t know what they’re talking about and the educators have the children’s best interests at heart. Her comments were met with resounding applause from the close to 50 teachers and administrators who attended the meeting.

Board members debated the issue, and seemed to be leaning toward holding a work session for further discussion, but no decision regarding a work session or vote to allow choice was made. One board member, Mr Richardson, who is opposed to choice, stated that allowing parents a choice in how their children are taught math would set a precedent and open every other instructional program to the same standard. I found that rather interesting because I agree with him, but I tend to think that allowing parents a choice in what their children are taught and how, is a good thing.

The board then ended the meeting with their comments. That’s when things got a bit more heated.

The first member to speak, Mr Lattin, went directly after one of the parents who has lead the charge for choice. He accused the parent of lying, of being a master manipulator and using the other parents as puppets who simply repeat whatever he tells them to say. He questioned the veracity of parents concerns when “almost 2/3 of the emails were just cut and paste”. A number of parents left the meeting at that point.

Then Mr. Richardson spoke. Mr. Richardson called the parents who left the room childish. He accused them and other parents of defaming the school system and the character of it’s employees. He accused the parents of spreading misinformation. He said the school board had spent far too much time listening to these parents when they should be listening to the people who know what they’re talking about.

As one of the parents on the receiving end of this diatribe and many others from the same two individuals, nothing I have ever said is misinformation. Everything is backed up with evidence gathered from sources unaffiliated with our fight and from documents obtained from the school system via FOIA. No one has ever told me what to say or how to say it. And the people who walked out did so rather then sit mutely by and take sucker punches.

So, where are we now? Nowhere, really. We believe four members support choice, two oppose it, and two others are undecided. The school system is facing severe budget shortfalls next year and will have to decide what to cut. Purchase orders for instructional materials will be issued in a few weeks – including somewhere between $500,000 to $750,000 for annual math “consumables” and material to expand to program to fifth grade. There is no time in the schedule for a work session on choice and no action item voting on choice is on the horizon.

The truth is that I don’t want to take anything away from anyone. I recognize that many parents and teachers believe the current program is more than adequate, but I disagree. I believe that the current program lacks the academic rigor necessary for my kids to succeed and would like to be able to enroll them in a program which has that rigor. That’s all I really want.

I don’t think it’s a “personal attack” or “juvenile” to expect that a Diary post be both lucid and well-written. If you could take a deep breath, you would see that I agreed that the school board was wrong.

I understand you are pissed that the local PW GOP didn’t really address your issues, but I have no clue what your issue was or why I should support you rather than the PW GOP.

If you could relay that information I could make some sort of judgment, without that info, well, this just comes off as a rant, nothing more.

    • monstermom

discussed the issue which was being discussed and I didn’t to bog people down with redundant information.

BTW I think the other article was great…I think it would be helpful if you edited this diary and included the link for the old diary so you can provide the context.

        Thanks.

If your intention was not to insult and intimidate me then why would you stoop to correcting my grammar? Did you honestly think that you were somehow educating me? That you were enlightening me to the error of my ways – that your expert counsel was desired and necessary, and delivered in an appropriate and considerate manner? Are you honestly so arrogant as to believe that your comments are anything short of insulting?

Feel free to discuss the issue, but please, don’t insult me. I have neither the time nor the patience for it.

      …of RedState.

I personally am grateful when I”m informed that I’ve fouled something up in a diary. You shouldn’t be offended, honestly. When I first started, my pieces were such a horror of HTML errors that I had to delete them and recopy from the original word documents.

The people who write on this site (myself included) work extremely hard to protect the integrity not only of the content, but of the presentation of that content. I don’t think it’s unreasonable, but then again, I’m pretty much the most thick-skinned person I know.

  • monstermom

I took your comments to heart and rewrote the whole thing. I apologize for being defensive and hope that the revised post is better written and more accurately conveys the issue.

    Thank You.

and the lesson I’ve been learning here at RS is this: if you don’t like how it’s being handled, join up and help change it. Those board members may put the (R) next to their names, but they don’t sound like conservatives to me.

Join the party. Continue going to the meetings… and CHALLENGE these people. Don’t just let them go out there spreading the message that their view is the Republican view (as, by your testimony, they are essentially doing). Challenge them. Ask them why, if they’re so damned positive the State can do the right thing without input from the constituency, they haven’t jointed the Dems.

Given that the Democratic party has absorbed the philosophy of Dewey and institutionalized educators over parental rights, your reaction is not logical but really a temper tantrum. What you’er advocating is like burning down the house because someone has turned the thermostat up too high.

Now if you’re hacked off at your local GOP establishment, by all means try to get them out of power – but make sure you’re not going from the frying pan into the fire.

The commentator just above, randy strue, above here has offered useful advice and productive advice. Direct your rage usefully, not destructively to the other values your hold dear.

They are not representative of the GOP in general. The Democrats are the party of monopoly school districts. Theirs is the party of the teachers’ unions. Theirs is the party of the nanny state that knows how to raise your kids better than you the parents do. Theirs is the party that attempts to destroy families and lure people into lifelong bondage to the welfare state. Republicans are the party of freedom.

Your local bumpkins need to be challenged by Republicans more like you with actual conservative values who don’t agree with all the hooey that the monopoly school hippies are advancing as part of their socialist hippie plan to turn your kids into a bunch of Democrat voting, Zerobama chanting, sexually promiscuous dope fiends. Go get em monstermomma!

    Monsterrmom:

You need to understand that, like any oganization, the GOP has its
share of time-serving hacks. You apparently ran into some.

    Some advice:

    1. Activism. When you post things like this, here, include the e-mail
address of the senior Republican on the PWC School Board. I’m sure
there are a number of folks here who would like to write him.

    2. Parliamentary procedure. If you run into a rant like that while you have the
floor at a public meeting, loudly and firmlhy declare “Point of Order!”

Everything will stop. Follow it with, “Mr. Chairman, I objecdt to this
member’s unprofessional, undignified and offensive behavior, and I
demand an apology and the courtesy of making my statement wthout
harrassment. The member’s disdain for his constituency is clear. Now that
that’s out of the way, I would like to return to my statement.” Then wait
    for the apology.

When you’re on the floor, you’re playing on an eqal basis with these
people. It’s up to you to call them to account. Politics is not a nice
business. Also remember: NEVER lose your cool. Even–especially–
    if the other guy does.

    3. More activism. Get involved in your local Republoican Party. when
Primary time comes along, run against him. Or else agitate for someone
else to, and work hard for him.

“Taking it back” means just that. Nobody’s going to give it away.

    4. Diplomacy. The guy who criticized your letter was doing you a favor.
Maybe there was something in it that could have been improved. So,
thank him for his input and you’ve won an ally. Get defensive or
    combative and you lose face.

Keep it up! and Good Luck in your next go-round!

In short, local school board officials want to make 3 of our local school districts worst-performing schools “Schools of Choice” using something like $10 million of Federal funds.

Highlighted among the programs to be introduced would be teaching the students Mandarin Chinese.

    No, I’m not joking.

These are clearly failing schools in state #49 or #50 on every measure of public education. The students need to be taught 1) how to read standard English; 2) how to speak standard English; 3) basic arithmetic; then 4) proficiency in all the above.

Mandarin Chinese might help them get a job in a Chinese restaurant instead of Taco Bell; other than that it will be utterly useless in these kids’ lives.

if you’re going to attack the education system, you’d better polish your grammar and writing skills. Please understand that I agree there should be input from concerned parents regarding their childrens’ curriculum–and that input should be welcomed, not rejected. However, your anger-filled rant seems impulsive and childish.
