Flash: Huckabee??

Please forgive the brevity of this post.  It’s intended as more of a news item than a posting of analysis.

According to my sources, former Arkansas governer Mike Huckabee is seriously considering venturing back into the GOP 2012 presidential race.  If he decides to do so, he’ll likely announce within the week.

ANALYSIS

As RedState’s likely staunchest Huckabee supporter in 2008, I have mixed feelings about him throwing his hat into the ring.  I think Herman Cain is a better selection this time around.  If Huckabee is concerned about the current field, specifically Romney and Perry, I’m not sure what he brings to the table now.  His stance on state college tuition assistance to children of illegal immigrants is nearly identical to Gov. Perry’s…and we all know how that’s worked out for Perry in the last few days.  Perry is also perceived as stronger on crime (due to Huckabee’s perceived pardon problem as Governor).

Huckabee’s support of the Fair Tax has now been pre-empted with Cain’s 9-9-9.   He’s a good debator, but so is Cain.

I’d love to see Mike as Secretary of HHS under a Cain administration.

in 2012. Huckabee/Huntsman duo in the whitehouse would be good for the country, in my view.

    • rightwingmom52

To the rest of us, not so much.

      • acat

Huntsman answers the progressive part, but Huckster ain’t no libertarian.

        Mew

        • rightwingmom52

but honestly, I was thinking of Johnson rather than Huntsman. In any event, I was tagging Huck as the progressive because he sure ain’t a conservative!

          • acat

Huntsman’s no libertarian, unless you mean in a Ron Paul sort of way.. that is, making up whatever garbage he feels like saying and calling it Libertarianism.

            Mew

    • Scope

where a Huckabee ( not running) and Huntsman ticket will accomplish anything? Please be specific and give details as the debate moderators from Fox require it?

      • progressivelibertarian

on both sides of the aisle. Massive policy changes as well as political reforms are badly needed to right the ship of our country, in both economic and political terms, lest we hit a point of no return.

Gov. Huckabee has the courage, integrity and the strength of mind, as well as genuine love and caring for the people, to stand up against that corruption. Gov. Hunstman is apparently also a man of great integrity, and I feel that they’d make a good team in steering the country in a better direction.

        • acat

          Term limits for the statehouse?
Some sort of inspector general clause?
Strengthened the role of the A.G.?
A Palin-style “anyone can file an ethics complaint” bill?

          Anything?

Just what did the good citizens of Arkansas get, other than higher taxes, for electing this guitar-pickin’ preacher man?

          Mew

(and why is someone claiming to be a libertarian spamming all over about him?)

          • QuoVadisAnima

Then how do you explain that he came into office as governor of AR with $200million in debt & the state infrastructure in a shambles thanks to the pillaging of the Clintons and Jim Guy Tucker – and left the state with an $850million surplus and a largely revamped infrastructure?

And he did it with a largely hostile majority Democrat legislature to boot.

There’s a reason that Huckabee was re-elected – and still popular enough to be re-elected when he left office due to term limits. And surely you can’t be so blinded by your obvious bias as to believe that it was due to higher taxes,..

          • Doc Holliday

in a purple Southern state. Huck is more likely to ban french fries than enhance liberty.

          • QuoVadisAnima

But even if your unsupported claims were true – then I will dump my belief in subsidiarity for your so-called big govt because the point is that what he did in his state was successful. And we just so happen to have a deficit that needs fixing as well as an economy that needs growing. Name one other candidate – or potential candidate – who can claim to have successfully managed a billion dollar turnaround of a state’s economy.

You know, even Milton Friedman advocated intervention in an economy that needs correcting because of previous interventions. He stated that unnatural imbalances have difficulty correcting naturally.

    Next. Please.

    • progressivelibertarian

Thanks to the work of Huckabee as governor for 10.5 years, Arkansas still has among most fiscally sound conditions (as well as lower unemployment rate than national) of any state in the country. As a Republican (presumably), shouldn’t you be embracing genuine successes of republican politicians?

      • acat

Huck is not any kind of conservative.

You do a disservice to this site, your party and the country with your approach.

I’ll be back to briefly respond to your comment in a few minutes.

          • acat

Look, go tell your master that he’s better off keeping the Fox gig, save us both a lot of time, ‘kay?

Dis he change his position and announce that he is going to run? Maybe he and Christie could announce as a joined ticket?

          • acat

Perhaps they’re thinking he can come back and whup up on Mitt like he utterly failed to do last time?

            Mew

          • Doc Holliday

why not just say he hates apple pie and fireworks and be done with it? BTW, Huck sucks.

          • Doc Holliday

he is ok on Fox, he should stay there. I rarely watch him, he is usually up against Stossel of The Judge.

        • pttx333

I had just commented to Scope about Huck and that he always gave me the willies. You have confirmed my belief in that. He is no conservative, and I am offended by his wearing his Christianity on his sleeve. I am a Christian, descended from a long line of ministers, deacons, etc., and none of them ever behaved as he does about it. Everyone knew they were Christians by the way they lived, and they never said a word.

Thanks for all of your comments, acat. They are most informative, and I certainly appreciate them so very much. I’ve learned so much in the short time I’ve been on RS – there are some really good folks here.

He’s really mean and terrible and will scratch your eyes out in a second. LOL I keep wondering if he’s come the longest way, or if I have. Doesn’t matter we’ve surely found some middles in there. Huh Cat?

to illegal/undocumented migrants, and even passed the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) in 1986, partly to help the illegal migrants. So you’d disqualify him?

Dubya, on the other hand, ‘cut taxes’ (in reality, the Bush ‘tax cuts’ just tacked on 1.7 trillion to the national debt). And so you’d vote for Dubya over the Gipper?

Huckabee needed to raise taxes as budget shortfalls were expected and, like most other states, Arkansas doesn’t allow deficit budgets. But he also gave many tax cuts (see his book for details), despite a massively Democratic state legislature (Arkansas has been voting GOP in presidential elections, but their state legislature is 90% Democratic, and Huckabee was only the second GOP governor there since reconstruction, i.e. it’s heavily Democratic state in state/local elections.)

AR’s gross state product (GSP) increased by a robust 60.7% during Huckabee’s tenure as governor, and the state’s median household income rose by 36.6% during 1996-2006, higher than the national average of 35.8% for the same period, and higher than all of AR’s neighboring states other than Oklahoma (MO 30.1%, TN 32.2%, MS 30.2%, LA 20.6%, TX 30.9%, OK 41.6%).

Overall, Huckabee’s pro-growth and pro-people policies and governance helped turn a ~$200 million budget shortfall into a ~$1 billion surplus by the time Huckabee left office. Had he returned to the office, he would have given large tax cuts using that surplus. The analyses done by anti-tax groups about his tax policies do not seem to have taken into account the budget surplus that he left behind.

          • Doc Holliday

So the Bush tax cuts tacked on debt? I guess you are a Keynsian socialist. Ever hear of reducing the size of government? Ever hear of getting out of the way of the free market? Ever hear of the money multiplier?

Look, I had a soft spot for Alexander Haig, but he will not be running for president in 2012. And if you want me to start making fun of Arkansas, that can be done.

          • Doc Holliday

sounds like code for a civil libertarian, ACLU type.

Huckabee is a pro-life liberal who cynically uses Christianity as a cloak for his liberalism.

        • progressivelibertarian

If you equate compassion and the upliftment of the weak/poor with liberalism, you aren’t doing conservatism a favor.

It can, does, and has been a problem when someone who possesses this quality of compassion is elected into the highest office within our government, lets their compassion overrule their common sense, can’t say “no” if their life depended on it, and ends up acting as a compulsive enabler for big-government social programs that we can’t afford!!!

          • Doc Holliday

for every statist with compassion, there are ten who simply believe they are born kings and we are pawns. Their compassion is for our stupidity and their greatness.

Jesus did NOT preach that the Roman empire should give to the poor. The Roman empire (and the Federal government) are worldly establishments.
God has NO interest in judging establishments.
Jesus DID preach that people should give to charity, after all it is the people whom God will judge in the end.
There are MANY Christian churches whose clergy FAILS to recognioze this.
Huck falls in their catagory. They are scerewed up!

    Cain’s just fine, thanks =)

…speaking only for myself with the Herman reference, of course, but NO to Huckabee. Let him carry-on with his tv show and washed-up musicians who can no-longer sing on-key…

What does that say about his views on accountability?

Seriously, auditing the Fed is going to cost money. Tax dollars will be spent.

Before I spend any of hte folding dead presidents I went out and earned, I want to know what the value I’m going to receive is. Catnip margerita? Well-marbled dry-aged ribeye? Bucket of popcorn and two movie tickets?

Perhaps Cain has asked the same question and found Luap Nor’s fishing expedition not worth funding.
