Yes, President-Elect Obama. I want someone who does virtually nothing to combat illegal immigration to run Homeland Security!

Anyone else confused by this?

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano will head the Department of Homeland Security. This is like having the fox guard the hen house.
This is quite possibly the worst appointment Barack Obama can make, unless he taps Chuck Hagel to run the DoD. Here we have a governor who does practically nothing to defend the border with Mexico, and our great leader wants her to help come up with solutions to defend us from terrorists? Does this show great judgement, or what?
Napolitano is notorious for only targetting businesses that hire illegal immigrants and other systems that “exploit” them. Look, I’m all about going after businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants, but she ignores her responsibility as the governor of Arizona by not going after the illegal immigrants themselves! How in the heck can a former Attorney General of her state blatantly disregard the law? She has even publicy criticized an Arizona Sherrif for volunteering to capture illegal immigrants to be deported.
If people like JaNo (as a friend of mine from Arizona refers to her) are going to be helping Obama protect the country, then we should all be afraid. After all, he already said he would meet with rogue dictators without preconditions; why not seal the deal with putting someone in charge of homeland security who doesn’t even bother to protect the border?

Confused by what exactly?

Did you expect Obama to govern as a conservative republican, or to appoint those who would?

Given that I wouldn't have been surprised if he'd

nominated Bill Ayers, JN’s a pretty good choice.

And, selfishly, we here in AZ get a Republican Governor who hopefully will help with redistricting in ‘10 when we get at least one new House Seat.

What's Brewer's re-election chances?

At this point, hard to tell.

The last time a SoS took over for a Governor it was Jane Hull. Gov Hull moved up when Symington resigned in late 1997. She won reelection in 1998. The only other SoS to move up was Rose Mofford, a D, who replaced Ev Meecham.

While SoS is an elective office in AZ, I don’t think there’s much comparison between the two offices. I also think that both Hull and Mofford (even though both were reelected) were, at best, mediocre governors.

All in all, I would expect her chances to be pretty good in ‘10. It’s an off year, I doubt the AZ race will attract much national attention from the Savior of our Country, and the Dem bench (along with the R bench) is pretty weak. She’ll have the better part of two years to build a resume as Gov and I think she’ll not do anything stupid enough to lose.

herself? What this signals to me, along with the pick of Holder for AG, is that the Dems wish to go back to pre 9/11 policy. That bodes very badly for the safety of America.

I would think Jan Brewer would win re-election. I liked Jan Brewer and virtually everyone at HuffPo hates her, so that makes her even better in my book!

I’m no fan of JN, haven’t and wouldn’t voter for her. But this is simply silly.

In case you haven’t noticed, border security is the job of the federal government, not the state government. You might want to air your complaint with John McCain’s office.

Additionally, AZ has some of the toughest employment laws in the nation regarding illegals. And we’ve deported more illegals than just about every other state combined.

There’s lots to be concerned about with Obama’s appointments, but this one won’t be anywhere near the worst (look at AG) and carping about “open borders” in relation to Gov Napolitano is stupid.

Illegal "Immigration"

Whitehorse Friday, November 21st at 12:24AM EST (link)

This is an issue which went on the back-burner in 2006 & 2008. In TN the Republicans who won the House ran on doing what they can to “demagnetize” TN from attracting illegal aliens. The whelming majority of Americans want our laws enforced & our borders secured, & they’re not going to get it from Obama. This must be a huge issue for Republicans in 2010 & our presidential candidate in 2012 has to be strong on border security, enforcement of our employment & immigration law, & ending illegal immigration. Combine that with strong fiscally responsible limited government conservatism we will have a great shot at reclaiming the WH in 2012.

you’re assuming that, in two years, it’ll be against the law to hire “undocumented immigrants” and that there will be a border. The dems view amnesty as the lynchpin in their efforts to make this a one-party nation. If they get 8-10 million of the amnesty vote, this country is done. We’ll be the Balkans-West.
