Kagan ’09: ‘There is No Federal Constitutional Right to Same-Sex Marriage’
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | March 28th at 09:36 AM |
Let’s take a stroll down memory lane. It’s 2009, and Elena Kagan is answering questions during her confirmation hearing for the position of Solicitor General within the Obama administration. According to William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection, who posted this piece on March 25, this is what she had to say about gay marriage: 1. As Solicitor General, you would be charged with defending the Defense of Marriage Act. | Read More »
Is The Marketplace Fairness Act A Giant Tax Increase?
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | March 27th at 01:43 AM |
The Marketplace Fairness Act passed last Friday, and conservatives are somewhat lukewarm about it. As Robert W. Wood wrote in Forbes on March 23, …[the bill] doesn’t impose a federal tax or even a new state tax. Online sellers are already required to collect sales tax from customers in their own states. But under the Supreme Court’s 1992 holding in Quill v. North Dakota, retailers don’t | Read More »
Finally! Radical Caitlin Halligan Withdraws Nomination To D.C. Court Of Appeals
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | March 23rd at 01:17 PM |
Well, it took three years, but Caitlin Halligan will not be a sitting on the D.C. Court of Appeals. She’s known for her progressive political views and judicial activism, which were so far outside the mainstream that other courts rejected her legal arguments. Ed Whelan at the National Review has documented her radical judicial philosophy. In 2004, Halligan signed a report issued by the Association of | Read More »
Bostic Hopes For A ‘Ted Cruz’ Moment Against Sanford
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | March 22nd at 09:20 AM |
In the the race to fill the vacant seat left by former Congressman – now Senator – Tim Scott (R- South Carolina), we have disgraced former Gov. Mark Sanford (R-South Carolina) and Curtis Bostic. Sanford failed to received 50% of the vote, which means there’s going to be a runoff election on April 2. Robert Behre of the Post and Courier wrote yesterday that: Bostic said Sanford stole tax money, | Read More »
Sen. Feinstein’s Assault Weapons Ban Amendment is DOA
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | March 19th at 05:29 PM |
Well, any conservative could have seen this coming, despite the incessant rambling of anti-gun zealots calling for a ban on so-called assault weapons. The first ban had a de minimis effect on lowering violent crime, and Democrats paid a heavy political price during the ’94 midterms for it. Now, the Washington Post’s Ed O’Keefe reports today that this anti-gun provision is dead on arrival. Furthermore, it’s not included in the | Read More »
Uh, Rand Paul Didn’t ‘Win’ The CPAC Straw Poll
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | March 18th at 06:36 PM |
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) has won the CPAC 2013 straw poll. Hooray! However, it’s not true. Contrary to what the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, the Washington Times (who conducted the poll), CBS, and CNN, have reported Sen. Paul tied with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida), which places him in a good position for 2016. Aaron Blake for the Post wrote: Paul won 25 percent of the vote in a field of potential 2016 GOP presidential | Read More »
GOProud’s LaSalvia: ‘ I’m Embarrassed To Call Myself A Republican Right Now’
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | March 18th at 05:40 AM |
Many conservatives have come to GOProud’s defense after it was denied the ability to sponsor CPAC. I was one of them. The National Review‘s editorial board, Kurt Schlichter, Andrew Bair, and Jedediah Bila were some others. Yes, CPAC was involved in the inexcusable outing of Tony Fabrizio, a Rick Perry pollster, in response to the governor’s ad about gays in the military – but that was two years ago. It | Read More »
CPAC: Folks, Mitt Romney Lost
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | March 15th at 03:01 PM |
Mitt Romney addressed CPAC this afternoon, and I did support his candidacy. After all, he was the only person in our miserable 2012 crop of candidates that had the best chance of winning. However, his communications team was mostly on defense, his high-tech GOTV ORCA program crashed rendering 30,000 volunteers helpless on Election Day, and his candidacy prohibited conservatives from talking about health care. Sen. Graham Backs Radical Obama Judicial Appointment
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | March 4th at 06:14 PM |
Caitlin Halligan, general counsel for Manhattan’s district attorney’s office, was nominated in 2010 to fill a vacancy on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, and has been re-nominated four times since then. A cloture vote to move forward with her nomination failed 54-45 in 2011. The presidential judicial appointments – by custom – should be taken under consideration by the Senate, but not this one. For | Read More »
Evisceration Memo Prompts Republicans To Demand Investigation Of Blueprint NC
By: Matt Vespa (Diary) | February 26th at 01:16 PM |
Yesterday, North Carolina Republicans called for an investigation of the progressive 501 (c) (3) group Blueprint NC, whichdrafted a memo calling for the evisceration of the party’s leadership. It was leaked to the press last Thursday, and Blueprint has since disavowed the memo. They’ve also claimed to be a “nonpartisan” group, but their list of partners – and Blueprint’s origins – are very much grounded in the left-wing of American politics. Mark Binker | Read More »
