Pence Solidifies Measure Allowing States to Defund Planned Parenthood

Senate Republicans needed Vice President Mike Pence Thursday to break a tie on a measure from the Obama administration that protected funds for Planned Parenthood.

In December of 2016, Obama offered Planned Parenthood one last parting gift when his Department of Health and Human Services passed a rule that forbid states from defunding Planned Parenthood.

Joni Earnst of Iowa led the Republican charge in the Senate to reverse the Obama-era rule, and had the support of every single Republican except Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.

Shocking to absolutely no one, all Democrats opposed the measure to roll back Planned parenthood overreach. The early strategy by Democrats is to paint Pence as a hypocrite for supporting women’s empowerment Wednesday and then voting in favor of allowing states the right to defund baby killers.

Fighting for babies to have the right to life doesn’t make anyone a hypocrite, it makes you an empathetic and intelligent human being.

Republican efforts to take down Planned Parenthood gained a lot of momentum 2015 after horrific undercover videos were released that shed light on how the company was selling body parts of aborted babies to biotech companies.

The passage of the legislation gives Republicans a much needed victory just one week after they failed miserably to pass a health care bill to replace Obamacare.

The new measure will allow states the freedom to decide how they choose to spend family planning funds. It removes government barriers that forced states to comply or risk losing funding, as we saw under the Obama administration.

“It substituted Washington’s judgment for the needs of real people,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said of Obama’s rule.

States will now have the opportunity to choose where they delegate funding, meaning they can provide assistance to groups and centers that don’t perform abortions if they so choose.

Today was a big win for anyone that supports the right for life.
