The Your Comments Open Thread

Go ahead. Click the My Profile link that’s up near the top of the page, between Recent Posts and My Diary. I dare you.

That’s right. Assuming all works as it did in my testing, not only can you get easy access to editing your profile now (including your signature), but your recent comments have returned.

Have fun. Comment here if it’s not working, or about anything else you want. It’s an open thread.

Will we be able to edit our articles soon?

I fat finger things from time to time…

    - The improvements are great. After feeling for a while like there was a horse scratching the ground to indicate bit shifts, it’s humming now.
    - I reported a few things to bs to sanity-check and pass along if appropriate, several of which are already fixed. Others include tabbing, preview, edit, and how redhots are linked.
    - Yesterday I posted a diary and I *thought* I entered a proper but Erick or someone ended up editing it to fix it. Is there anything different about typing in lines with HTML tags now, or must I just have been looking at it wrong?

How about creating an open “test” diary for people to play with? Obviously that’s not the same as testing posting of diaries themselves, but people could play with the response side. I realize I could create one, but a highly visible one would be more useful IMHO.

    <a href=”…”>…</a> (let’s see if I can get that right w/o preview)

  • wag

Well, I still think that. But at least I know it’s not about remembering that I used to be able to edit and thinking I just forgot where the little entry wicket to editing was.
Oh, and I have two comments posted to the wrong diary. (I have NO idea how I did that either.)

  • wag

I used to go into edit all the time, not to edit, but to view my post and to see what was necessary to post a link or an image and copy it.

Thank you so much for the comment tracker on our profile…seriosly if I am ever in Cali I will look you up and take you out for pie..or dinner..whichever….;^)

(If we are requesting site options, I’d like a “preview before post comment” if at all possible.
I’d also like to lose these last ten pounds AND the recipe to my mom’s famous stuffing. . .as long as I’m making requests)

  • skey

I’m seeing an issue fairly often where when I view a post, at the top it will say ‘n comments’ but at the bottom it will say ‘no comments yet’ or something like that, and the comments won’t be there. It only happens when I’m logged in, and logging out and back in usually fixes it.

  • http://www.erickerickson.org Erick Erickson

    I fixed it.

  • $peciallist

    No violation…..

    luckily you added…’or dinner..whichever?.;^)’

    carry on

  • Darin_H

You rock! Things are coming along.

I won’t say anything snarky like “was the plan to make us happy with just a working site after the last 6 months?”

Heh. If we’re ever in the same bar, I’ll buy you a round or three!

  • reldim

Is there a way to get back to the old log in system – where after you log in you are taken back to the main site page? At present when I log in it takes me to a stupid dashboard from which I can only get to my own blog. Otherwise I have to re-enter the URL.

Also, I note that you used to not be given the option to add a comment until you were logged in (the box didn’t appear, nor did the “reply to this” buttons). Apparently, that’s no longer the case – I have several times gone through the trouble of composing a comment only to hit the “post” button and have the system tell me that I “must be logged in to post comments.” Given the log in issue above this means cutting and pasting and trying to save the comment so that I don’t have to retype it when I jump through the log in hoops.

Maybe I’m just missing some of the tricks and shortcuts, but so far I’m not sure I understand the point of all of this upheaval since the features seem unchanged and a whole bunch of new bugs, quirks, and annoyances have been injected. It’s actually causing me to scale back on my visits to the site since I just can’t be bothered wasting time navigating the issues to get to the content.

need to use official HTML href and “img source=” entries… at least in comments… I haven’t tried the other method in a Diary creation.

You can play in a Diary all you like… click the preview… just don’t change to PUBLISHED until it is clean/ready…

  • bs

    …to bake him some cookies.

That’s a league suspension, for sure.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

    That’s the WordPress way.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

The point of this transition is that RS had been ripped off, sold software that wasn’t going to work, and the site was going to fall apart for good if we didn’t do something.

And as far as tricks and shortcuts, that’s on me to let you guys test, and then react to that testing by trying to smooth things over.

But I’m a volunteer so it may take a little time, sorry.

  • ekevlar11

Before commenting. Seems to work fine for me, but I’ve been out for a while. Honestly, this appears to be working better than it has in months. And, I went through the whole 500 timeout error…was frustrated…but haven’t left. This is nothing compared to that.

  • ekevlar11

That sucks…I guess the death star got blown up. But it looks like the construction team is working on the next one.

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

The names appear highlighted like they used to be, but cursor over and no click-thru function appears. How are people suppose to get to someones Profile and/or Diary creations lists!?!?

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

    That was simply overlooked.

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

when someone doesn’t have a visible comment and/or Diary to click on the ID. Would be nice to see a box under the “Get Local” that would allow us to Enter a RS UserId to be taken directly to that Persons “My Diary” Directory to see their available Diaries for review and then from their someone can click-down to the persons actual Profile info if desired.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

Look at the url under My Profile and adjust accordingly.

By the way the usernames in comments are fixed.

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

being able to go directly from the Front Page to someones Diaries that someone is “A Fan Of” (remember that discussion!?!?!) would reduce the reason/excuse for someone to have to Flood the Front Page with 6 Diaries at a time all in a row… If someone is a “FAN” of a particular member, they probably even already know how to URL their way to that persons Diary entries already (or has that URL bookmarked – or at least one would hope). I am saying as an overall functionality issue for current and NEW USERS especially to come to know.

But I know no matter what I say, somes egos will prevent them from doing anything but continue to flood the front page without regard to what is there and w/o regard to anyone but themselves.

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

no need to retype the RS URL.

boy, all this reminds me how much I DO NOT MISS having to be involved in doing the actual fixing ;-)

    (nt)

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

Depends on the code, but I’m hoping that it might be just a quick change to the number of entries that are allowed in each of these lists/boxes….

That will eleviate some of the Reco-list issues right now, as a few more will pop in….

Comments, some are minor and more significant ones we’d like to see to click on go away to quickly… longer list would be helpful/nice…

Same with Members-Diaries list…. since ones that get put on Front Page even still land up in that list… It pushes alot of other NEW/FRESH diaries off the list very quickly…. Thought following the election the number of new Diary creations would ease, but new diaries for all the same subjects pop up again on a daily basis and some Diaries don’t last on the page for much more than 12 hours (depending on the traffic).

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

    1. Rec list size I’m leaving alone. When I deal with the rec list, I’ll deal with it all at once.

    2. Recent diaries are at 40. Any larger and it become ridiculous.

    3. Recent comments I’ll bump to 40.

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

would be nice to know what that actual number of created diaries a day… charted over a period of time… would be great to see/know about…

    THANKS AGAIN NEIL!!

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

    ..

  • mbecker908

    1. I know you’re overworked so I’d like to volunteer to redo the Rec List.

    2. If YOU mess with the Rec List it will really piss off Franz.

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

It would be real nice to see it charted by User, # of Diaries created a day, the allocation to where they were created (just a regular diary, or direct to Front Page), create date, date it scrolled off of all (Front page if ever there, MembDiary list, Reco list if on, etc….), etc….

It would be REAL TELLING information! and something that ALL site personnel and volunteers should see

  • bs

and at the length it was on RS 3, they were lasting almost exactly 24 hours on the “User Diaries” list. I think the rate of contribution has increased some since then. I think they should last there at least a day.

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

I’d like to see them last on the Members-Diaries list about 3 days….

Would be nice if the following logic were in place…

If on Front Page (and therefore getting PLENTY of exposure) should NOT list in the Members-Diaries list…

If it filters up to the Reco-List, it should also NOT be listed in the Members-Diaries list….

Any/All users last 3 Diaries should be eligible for List (any more, the later ones should be NOT in the list)….

I know that would require much more code/logic though and therefore going to remain a complete pipe-dream of mine…

  • bs

I just counted the “Member Diaries” on the FP, and there are only 21 entries there right now. Is something broken, or are you talking about the Tracker?

  • bs

Obviously it doesn’t matter if it’s the FP or not – on EVERY page the list is only 21 entries long…

  • http://www.theminorityreportblog.com/ Brian Simpson

[crossing fingers and hoping the answer is "yes...eventually"]

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

    That link works now/again

  • http://www.ssce.net/Web-Articles/Web-articles-indexed-authors.html#authors-l JLenardDetroit

I thought it had that last X number of all comments (new/recent comments) with the Comment header, then Diary link info… but it is/does not… like an extended Comments list (what I thought you were saying)

    ugh…

Don’t you guys be discouraging cookies. I like cookies.

Peanut butter with a Hershey’s Kiss on top?

    Chocolate chip and macadamia nut?

    Toffee chip?

    Mmm mmm mm.

  • http://www.erickerickson.org Erick Erickson

I think we just need a “More diaries” link at the bottom of the list to get to the rest of the diaries.

  • http://brockwayfamily.spaces.live.com/ Erick Brockway

my connection is messed. TW Cable keeps dropping out on me

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

    It’ll take time…

  • http://www.erickerickson.org Erick Erickson

I’ll have to get her in the kitchen for you. Heh.

  • http://www.theminorityreportblog.com/ Brian Simpson

Back on RS v 2.0 (and maybe 1.0…wasn’t around) the tracker would actually tell you # of new comments and a “New!” would appear next to any new comments. For many of us it was the best way to keep up with multiple threads. You could hop from thread to thread by jumping to new comments and using the search function to skip to other New! comments on the page. It was very handy. I hope it comes back.

  • http://www.erickerickson.org Erick Erickson

Well, we probably ought to stretch out that list then.

  • bs

I was kind of pissy about it when it disappeared, but I guess I’m kinda used to it being gone now.

  • http://www.theminorityreportblog.com/ Brian Simpson

but bringing it back would be a big plus for motivating me to get more involved in the threads.

  • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

To implement it is *costly* on the server, and while we could afford it when RS was basically a little chat club, now we have too many users and too much load to try it.

  • http://www.theminorityreportblog.com/ Brian Simpson

Chalk one up to the perils of getting too big.

Thanks Neil (for responding that is)

Break them into categories to enable better use of the screen real estate.

For example put them in tabs (e.g. heading could be “last hour”, “previous two hours”, whatever) or clickable links that enable a refresh of only that section.
