As most of us watch the special election in New York, we still have a Senate primary in California to deal with. It’s the same old story, though. There are two kinds of Republicans.
One kind celebrates big government and progressive control over America. Carly Fiorina, like Dede Scozzafava, is one of those:
While some of us are fighting hard against the Obama push to nationalize the Internet, Fiorina goes behind our backs and joins them, just as Scozzafava will work with ACORN and Planned Parenthood. Meanwhile, Chuck DeVore knows the score and endorses Doug Hoffman.
There are two kinds of Republicans. Some are on our side. Some are more interested in the left. I know which I prefer to represent our party.

The split in the Republican party
Scope (Diary) Tuesday, October 27th at 1:56PM EST (link)is widening, and I’m happy that it seems to be coming to a head. With the Scozzafava race, in addition to the Fiorina race, the endorsement of Crist in Fla. over a conservative, is all ratcheting up the rhetoric, and, it’s mostly against the establishment Republicans who have marched the R party into the wildnerness. If Hoffman wins the NY race, and I do pray he does, as a Conservative party candidate, there may be a tendancy among many to vote for future Conservative party candidates. In races where we are to choose between Democrat and Democrat Lite, I think more candidates will run on the Conservative party label. I’m thinking about Kirk in IL, who I believe already has been backed by McCain. What’s to stop a conservative from challenging him and a Democrat when the Conservative will get the funding and backing of those like Thompson, Palin, Armey, the Club for Growth and etc. who have had louder and more widely heard voices than the McCain’s & Graham’s etc. This is a trend I can really see happening. Neil, I am not advocating or supporting any third parties, it is just something that is a real possibility, if the current so-called R leadership doesn’t leave the dock, and get to the airport where the conservatives are landing.
I won't go 3rd party

The best that could happen is for them all to be replaced with much much better, and more principled candidates in 2010. In light of the fact that millions have screamed for them to change their failed policies, and yet they still keep banging on the same drums (Scozzafava), none of us can ever hope to make SURE they get it.
I see it this way

I’m hoping that the Scozzafava “mistake” will have such bad implications for those idiots, they never do it again. Hoffman is a Republican, that is running in the Conservative party, because he didn’t leave his party, his party left him. There is no question that he would be running as a Republican, if that option were his. I am strongly in favor of running some in the Conservative party, if they keep giving us the crappy candidates that they have like Scozzi. I just wonder how many times it will take.

merryj1 Thursday, October 29th at 7:09AM EST (link)This one has me spitting. Michael Steele was bubbly with enthusiasm on a WLS-AM radio interview and Kirk’s been endorsed by my own Rep (who I had hoped would toss his own hat in the Senate ring), as well as by McCain and who-knows-who-else. That’s about getting an “R” into the Senate, it’s pragmatism over principle.
I understand the importance of numbers, it means the difference between majority and ‘locked out’ status, but that’s just not good enough. What good is gaining a “majority” if its members support the radical agenda?

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, October 27th at 4:45PM EST (link)to thrash out positions and political philosophies. Better truth in advertising so that the voters know what they’re getting. As opposed to these stealth candidates who get escorted in to office and then vote for whoever pays them the most.
Also, you’re not “eating your own” when your party doesn’t have the incumbency and you’ve got people running like Carly who are essentially self-nominated.
And guess what, a fair number of people aren’t too happy with elected officials on your side of the aisle either for the same reason (even if coming from the other side of the divide).
The point is that stealth candidates and unprincipled votes turn off voters from participating, which is bad for democracy no matter how you look at it. And that goes for Republicans and Democrats alike.
So primary fighting is health for our nation, so long as the choice is over policy. Personality battles – that’s where your you get your destructive battles that hurt more than accomplish

seandparnell (Diary) Wednesday, October 28th at 9:48AM EST (link)Sorry, but if you’ve got evidence that Fiorina isn’t good on the First Amendment, this isn’t it. What is she talking about? For all I know she’s talking about taxing sales on the internet, or the international assignment of web addresses, or “net neutrality,” or basic right-of-way regulation for companies that lay the lines the internet runs over. But those are all separate issues from regulating the content/speech of what runs over the web.
Fiorina may be hostile to the First Amendment, and if she is I’ll be quite happy to criticize her. But whatever she’s talking about in the clips provided doesn’t give any indication that she’s talking about censoring speech online or ignoring the First Amendment.

Sorry, still not hearing it
seandparnell (Diary) Thursday, October 29th at 9:40AM EST (link)She talks about taxes, then she says, regarding “exploitation of women and children,” that (I’m paraphrasing here, but this is the gist of it) that “if something is illegal offline, it should be illegal online.” My guess is that she’s talking about child porn and maybe “peeping tom” or sex abuse (real, not staged/fake) videos of adults.
I’d say it’s probably worth a follow up question with her, to pin down exactly what she believes should be regulated. But my takeaway from THIS interview, in the timeframe you pointed me to, is that she’s talking primarily about online child porn.
Again, Fiorina may very well be bad on the First Amendment (my experience is that politicians who are described as “practical” and “moderate” tend to favor all sorts of limits on the First Amendment, starting with campaign finance “reform”), but the clip you pointed me to is hardly worth getting bothered about.

UpLateAgain (Diary) Wednesday, October 28th at 5:05PM EST (link)Every two years, the argument is made that it is better to elect a moderate Republican than to concede the race to the Democrat.
Not me. Not any more. I think we may have already lost the country I grew up in, and it has the near term potential to become intolerable. I don’t think we have a prayer of rescuing it now absent strictly conservative people coming to power. Elect moderate Republicans now, and you might as well sign the country off as a complete loss. There’s no more time for government as usual, or even party politics as usual.
The essence of the Tea party movement is that you vote for the most conservative, small government candidate, regardless of party. I’ve come to believe in that.
There IS a tipping point, beyond which the only possible way of saving the country would be through armed revolution. The idea of that scares me to death, but I hear it being openly discussed among strangers in line at WalMart or outside the local hardware store with increasing frequency.
I don’t know where that tipping point is, but I am 100% confident that electing moderate Republicans will just keep us moving toward it.

Warrior, thanks for your effort
ColdWarrior (Diary) Thursday, October 29th at 1:15PM EST (link)But, in my view, none of that really matters to the “powers that be” in the Republican Party leadership. Oh, they like your money. Otherwise, as long as you’re on the “outside” of the Party, they don’t really care what you say. You are no threat to them. And they won’t tell you how you can become a threat. You become a threat when you become a voting member of the Party. It’s called “precinct committeeman” in many states, “associate” in others. Every state has its own system.
With half the precinct committeemen slots nationwide vacant in the Republican Party, and without any evidence that conservatives who share your view points flooding into the Party internal voting ranks, the existing Party leadership could care less what you tell them. As long as you’re an “outsider” without a vote in whether they retain their leadership posts, what you say is inconsequential. The ONLY way you can change the Party leadership is by . . . drum roll . . . changing the Party leadership. To do that, you have to have a vote. To have a vote, you have to become a voting member of the Party.
I don’t know how it works in your state. Go here and see if becoming a precinct committeeman might be something for which you’d have the time and inclination. I haven’t been able to find step-by-step instructions for every state on the web.

Click on the Nevada link and read about how conservatives in the various grass roots movements banded together and invaded and took over the Clark County GOP leadership, voting out all the squishes and replacing them with conservatives. How’d they do it? They created a conservative majority by all becoming precinct committeemen and then voted in new conservative leadership.
Wouldn’t you think the new GOP.com web site should have had, front and center on it, a link entitled something like, “Click Here To Come Into The Party As A Voting Member — It’s Easy and Gives You Real Political Power in Deciding Who Gets To Run The Party?” You might think that if you assumed the “powers that be” want conservatives to come into the Party voting ranks. They don’t. The “powers that be” like the status quo just fine.
Want change in the Republican Party? Then make it happen as a precinct committeeman.
Thank you.

Question - Does the whole apparatus
UpLateAgain (Diary) Thursday, October 29th at 6:48PM EST (link)have to change to get things started in the right direction? I think not. VA appears to be a lock at this point, but it was always expected to be so. I think the rest of this presidency is very different if Christie and Hoffman win, than it would be if Corzine and either Scuzzyfava or Owens take it.
The Democrats, and particularly the Blue Dogs, don’t fear the Republicans. But they fear conservatives. They won campaigning to the right of their party mainstream in districts that on the whole go for the conservative traditionally.
Even if Corzine pulls it out in NJ, a Hoffman win in NY could have serious implications for curtailing Cap and Tax as well as Health Care Reform. And if those dominoes fall, Obama may have in fact met his Waterloo and the whole conservative movement gets a big shot in the arm.
So getting Hoffman elected is not just another at bat. It’s a swing for the fence that has the potential to put the game away (if not the whole series). A win for Hoffman would be viewed by many as the proof that the Tea parties and the Town hall Meeting crowd were not just a passing phenomenon, but instead are something that has to be calculated into future considerations.

Well, you know Neil,
Warrior (Diary) Thursday, October 29th at 10:42PM EST (link)in spite of some difficulties remaining, four out of our seven Representitives are conservative Republicans, our two Senators are staunchly conservative and our Govenor is way conservative. And that’s in a state (AL) that has been controlled by Democrats for well over one hundred years.
I’d say we’ve been doing our work.
BTW, according to JadedByPolitics over on the “Tin Ears in Republican Leadership” diary:
The TEA Party participants have NO “loyalty” to the GOP….
“They, and when I say ‘they’ I mean ME, have a loyalty to the United States of America and the Conservative who speaks to her greatness and the necessity to hand it back over to We The People and away from the filthy disgusting hands of the idiots in DC.”
“If anyone of those tools running the GOP think for one moment WE stand with them, well NY-23 and the SMACK upside their head should take care of that notion!”

Why don’t you go lecture him about “teaming up with others ” and “trying to influence who the next chairman is”?

CW, we have two staunchly conservative
Warrior (Diary) Thursday, October 29th at 3:03PM EST (link)Senators, Shelby and Sessions. But on the local level it’s a club for old guys who have already made their pile and don’t really want much change. They keep voting each other in. Also, they want somebody with money which is definitely not me.
In any event, considering the nationalization of large corporations and the imminent takeover of much more of the private sector, whatever I’ve done seems to have been a waste of time.
Of course I will continue the fight and continue trying to get on “the inside”, but I hope it’s not too late. Remember, (if we’re lucky) we (only) have another year with Obama in control of most of the levers of power.

“Looks like the NRCC may have strong-armed the Scozzafava selection. So much for State’s rights and “local” action. You decide”
http://www.teapartynation.com/profiles/blogs/looks-like-the-nrcc-may-have
“Dugan and many of the local Republican County Committeemen and rank and file were not happy with the tainted process by which the National Republican Congressional Committee forced the liberal Scozzafava upon this largely conservative district, as was first documented by The TCOT Report. Yesterday, the TCOT Report story on the tainted nomination process of Scozzafava was confirmed in its entirety in a blog post by Dan Riehl.
Unfortunately, the fingers that matter appear to point back to Washington and the NRCC. No wonder we are now reading reports of the NRCC going all in for Dede in NY – 23. Someone needs to cover their behind in something that is said to have not won many friends even including within the RNC itself. That’s likely the reason why they were so slow to give to Scozzafava in NY – 23 until well after the NRCC. In short, they were ticked-off as it appears the NRCC rigged it and blew it from start to finish. But GOP first and uber alles in DC at the end of the day.”

She understands local issues
Warrior (Diary) Saturday, October 31st at 2:41AM EST (link)Unfortunately, that doesn’t matter so much since Obama and company are basically trying to take control of EVERYTHING away from the localities and move it to DC.
That’s why we need a national focus right now or it won’t matter who the hell is in charge at the local level. They will simply be aparachicks carrying out diktats from the Obeyme commicssars…
And considering how liberal Scozzafava is, I wouldn’t care if her opponent lived on another planet, as long as he, she or it was a dependable conservative…
