The air war tightens the California race
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | October 14th at 02:15 PM |
As I’ve not been shy about saying, I have an emotional attachment to the California Senate race. I live here, I’ve always lived here, and in fact Democrat Barbara Boxer was first elected to the Senate when I was first beginning to follow politics, back when I was 14 years old. So I knew the television ad campaigns would make or break the race for | Read More »

Carly Fiorina has a moneybomb going
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | October 13th at 04:22 PM |
One goal’s already been hit, but they’re raising the bar. Retire Boxer. My latest projection has this a competitive race, right on the second tier roughly. She’s running ads on television statewide and she’s fighting hard. This is an expensive state and she could use the help. The NRSC is also putting money in, so we’re not alone in helping out. Remember: national Democrats were | Read More »
A metric ton of new polling today
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | October 6th at 08:00 PM |
Good evening. We have a great deal of new polling that’s flooded in. Much of it is interesting too, so rather than pick and choose which polls I’ll cover in depth and which I will omit, instead I’ll give a quick look at all the good ones. We’ve got Senate races in Nevada, Connecticut, West Virginia, Ohio, New York, Missouri, and Delaware, plus races for | Read More »

Tech at Night: Henry Waxman, Net Neutrality, California, New York, 4chan, Privacy
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | October 4th at 11:30 PM |
Apologies for missing the last two Tech at Nights. But unlike the paid staff of the well-funded Free Press, every word I’ve ever written here on technical issues has been on my own time, for free, because I care about the issues. And when work overwhelms me, as it did last week as a huge deadline approached, something had to give. And what gave was | Read More »

The Waxman Net Neutrality bill should move forward
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 29th at 04:36 PM |
Update: Waxman is now using Republican opposition to this bill to claim the FCC should now implement the worst case of Internet regulation. Republicans need to get behind a reasonable compromise and we need to commit to outlawing Title II reclassification. The FCC going on its own would do incalculable damage to the industry going forward. Action is needed sooner, not later. If you take | Read More »

Raese now leads both West Virginia Polls
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 28th at 02:00 PM |
Some states get seven or eight polls of their Senate races. West Virginia has had two: Public Policy Polling and Rasmussen Reports. And honestly it seems that we were lucky to get PPP to jump in there. But now that Rasmussen’s latest is out, it’s official: Republican John Raese leads all the current polling over Democrat Joe Manchin.
Tech at Night: Domestic Internet spying, FCC, Free Press, Henry Waxman, Net Neutrality
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 28th at 04:00 AM |
Hello. The longer the Democrats are in Washington, the more the mask slips with respect to their true beliefs regarding freedom online. They claim they don’t want a government takeover, they claim they don’t want to regulate content, they claim they don’t want a kill switch, they claim they want to respect privacy, but time and again all of these issues just keep coming up. | Read More »

Tech at Night: Devastating poll against Net Neutrality, FCC, DISCLOSE, Free Press
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 25th at 08:00 PM |
Good evening. Welcome to the special, totally planned, and not at all a fallback because I wore out after a week of catching up after the RS Gathering, Saturday edition of Tech at Night. I did want to make sure we all read about this poll by Hart Research Associates which shows over 75% of likely voters (MoE should be about 3.4 for a sample | Read More »

Raese takes a lead in West Virginia
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 21st at 04:30 PM |
I was going nuts watching West Virginia get almost no polling, even as Rasmussen Reports repeatedly showed the race close. Well I need not pull my hair out any longer, as Public Policy Polling hit the race. And once again, the theory of a Rasmussen “House Effect” for Republicans is called into question.
Sometimes a candidate is more than we expect
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 8th at 10:00 AM |
During the California Senate primary, my major criticisms of Carly Fiorina were that she had no public track record to back her on the issues, and that as a novice campaigner she was liable to make mistakes and lose a winnable race. During the race I didn’t quite give her the Tom Campbell treatment, but I gave Chuck DeVore all the support I could. During | Read More »

SurveyUSA: Paul well ahead in Kentucky
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 5th at 03:01 PM |
SurveyUSA is no fly-by-night operation in polling. They’ve been around a while, they have a reputation, and a great many newspapers seem use them to poll local House races. So we can’t dismiss their continuing series of polls which look very good for Republicans, including this new Kentucky Senate poll for the Louisville Courier-Journal with Republican Randal Paul seeming to overwhelm Democrat Jack Conway.
Tech at Night: Net Neutrality Update
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 4th at 05:18 AM |
Another quick one tonight. I’d feel bad, but the Net Neutrality situation is so important that the current developments by themselves are worth noting. And here’s the key fact right now: It is confirmed that Net Neutrality will not be on the agenda at the FCC’s September meeting. They’ve talked for months, but they’re going to talk some more. My theory is that Google has | Read More »

By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | August 24th at 02:50 AM |
Good evening RedStaters. I spent all weekend battling a monster cold, so I’m still a bit thrown off, and so didn’t even try to get tonight’s installment of Tech at Night in before midnight Eastern. In fact it’ll be a reach to get this done before midnight Pacific, but such is life. RedState diarist ladyimpactohio (follow her on Twitter at @ladyimpactohio) already scored one big | Read More »

Tech at Night: RIAA, DMCA, Viacom, Google, Gun Owners of America, Free Press
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | August 18th at 11:30 PM |
Good evening. A story I expect to hear more about is this a proposed subsidy for radio stations and the RIAA both of some sort of legal requirement for new cellular phones to include an FM radio receiver. Such a requirement would raise costs on everyone, lower innovation and even basic differentiation options, and be nothing but a detriment to anyone who shops for cellular | Read More »

Daily Kos meets the Likely Voter
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | August 17th at 05:30 PM |
From Unlikely Voter: PPP has delivered a poll on the Missouri Senate race for Daily Kos, and I’m seeing genuine anger at the results, which are now filtered for those likely to vote in November. As Kos says, “So what’s going on? Our old friend, the intensity gap.”
Giannoulias leads, but Democrats deeply depressed
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | August 17th at 02:00 PM |
From Unlikely Voter: I theorized before that Pat Quinn would drag down Alexi Giannoulias in Illinois, with a rout for Governor having reverse coattails for Senate, and now Public Policy Polling seems to show the effects I predicted. A bad candidate for governor in a negative wave year is a terrible situation for a party to have, but that’s the Democrats in Illinois today.

Barbara Boxer still leading, still vulnerable
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | August 5th at 12:00 PM |
From Unlikely Voter: Carly Fiorina’s support continues in a band of 38-43 in the new Rasmussen poll of the California Senate race, while Barbara Boxer fails to reach 50. Boxer strikes me as the Democrats’ counterpart to Richard Burr: She really ought to be doing better, but she’s letting her opponent hang around.
On Missouri and the rejection of the PPACA
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | August 4th at 10:00 PM |
From Unlikely Voter: When I heard yesterday that Missouri passed an initiative attacking the PPACA in state, and declaring that Missouri’s citizens are exempt from portions of it, I thought it would be interesting to compare that Proposition C’s results with polling on the issue in state. So let’s check.
Fox News meets the Swingometer
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | July 30th at 12:00 PM |
From Unlikely Voter: Opinion Dynamics did a generic ballot poll for Fox News, so we welcome Fox to the Swingometer today. Also polled is the President’s performance on the issues. I see on the issue of “Race Relations” Barack Obama has +16 net approval at 50/34. I wonder if that will change after his statements on The View yesterday.
Tech at Night: DRM, Google, Wikileaks, Dingell, North Korea, Free Press
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | July 29th at 02:59 AM |
A key story from today centers on John Dingell and his criticism of Chairman Julius Genachowski and the Obama FCC. Hillicon Valley reports that Dingell is criticizing the Commission harshly for failing to justify its Title II Reclassification plans to Deem and Pass Net Neutrality regulation of the Internet, and is telling them to stop and let the Congress do its job. Seriously, this is | Read More »
