Babs Boxer: Being a Senator is as tough as being a soldier
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | July 27th at 03:41 AM |
It’s no wonder Madam Senator Barbara Boxer (Democrat-California) demands to be called Senator: She thinks it’s a pretty tough job. In fact, she thinks it’s as tough as being “a policeman or a fireman or a veteran.” It gets better, too. She says “the pressure” that she and Maxine Waters feel creates the same bonding that the aforementioned police, fire, and military volunteers endure and | Read More »
Abortion will not drive California elections this year
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | July 22nd at 03:00 PM |
The Orange County Register ran a doom and gloom article on abortion, saying that a Field Poll release suggests abortion will drive statewide elections this year. This is important because Carly Fiorina is a three-exception pro-life Republican. But there’s one big, honking problem with that theory, and the Register‘s Dena Bunis even mentions it: Among Boxer supporters, 82 percent support abortion rights. Of those who | Read More »
Is Rasmussen biased toward the Republicans? Not in California.
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | July 14th at 03:30 PM |
Certain critics either say or imply that Rasmussen Reports is skewed toward Republicans, just because this cycle he predicted early that the 2010 electorate would look nothing like that of 2008. But that’s not the same as having a partisan bias, and in fact, comparing the latest Rasmussen poll of the California Senate race with SurveyUSA hints there is no such partisan bias to be | Read More »
Fiorina also makes it close in California
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | July 8th at 01:30 PM |
Following up on yesterday’s Field release which saw Democrats bleeding the Latino vote in California, this poll of the Senate race brings more personal bad news for Barbara Boxer: her job approval ratings have sunk underwater, joining her personal favorability ratings.
Whitman makes it close in California
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | July 7th at 12:00 PM |
Before the primary, for a while when Meg Whitman was campaigning and Jerry Brown did not have to, Whitman took a lead in the race for Governor in California. It didn’t last, but the latest Field Poll is good news for her, and not just because it shows her with only a one point deficit.

Fiorina calls out Boxer and Obama on border security
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | July 1st at 06:04 PM |
In the past some have questioned Carly Fiorina’s commitment to securing the border from the invasion of illegal aliens, but she’s issued a strong statement challenging Babs Boxer and Barry Obama on their “cynical” disregard for our nation’s security. A key highlight: “The President talked about accountability in his speech. It is true – more accountability is needed, and that starts with the federal government’s | Read More »
California Proposition 19: The next stand for federalism?
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | June 30th at 02:30 AM |
California’s going to have a busy ballot in November. In addition to voting for Governor, Senator, and more statewide offices than you can shake a stick at, we’re going to have a long list of initiative statutes and constitutional amendments to deal with. One of the more interesting ones is numbered 19. Proposition 19, the Regulate, Control, and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010, if passed | Read More »
Boxer showing rare vulnerability for a California Democrat
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | June 21st at 03:39 PM |
I always hesitate to analyze the California Senate polling because I have strong feelings about it. I live here. I was engaged in the primary. But this is key to determining how big of a wave, if any, Republicans see in the Senate, so I must try. I’ve given enough time for both parties to settle down after the primaries, so here’s Rasmussen’s latest. Boxer | Read More »

My California Ballot, June 8, 2010
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | May 31st at 09:40 AM |
This is a long ballot, and I won’t cover everything, but there are a few races I’d like to mention, as well as the statewide initiatives we’re faced with this time around.

Governors matter.
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | May 28th at 02:31 PM |
At RedState we’ve hammered for a long time the idea that your local politics matter. We also give plenty of attention to federal elections for the House, the Senate, and of course the President. But governors matter, too. The next governor of South Carolina will affect us all. As will Georgia’s, Ohio’s, and Oregon’s. It doesn’t matter where you live. These Governors, as well as | Read More »

Palin shapes two races
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | May 25th at 05:04 PM |
Having attended a speech of Nikki Haley’s in Atlanta last year, her run for Governor of South Carolina is one I’ve followed. Living here, I’ve also watched the California Senate race. Both situations seemed to be stable: Haley was stuck in fourth, while in California Tom Campbell was staying ahead of second place Carly Fiorina. Then Sarah Palin intervened, and both Haley and Fiorina shot | Read More »

Two minute warning in the California Senate Primary
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | May 25th at 02:03 AM |
Two polls on the California Senate Republican primary caught my attention today. I’ve been holding off posting on this race with my poll analysis hat on, because I wasn’t sure I could trust myself to be even handed enough. But these two polls, coming as they are 15 days before election day, are interesting enough that I have to try. They could hardly be more | Read More »

Carly Fiorina rakes in the pro-life endorsements
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | May 4th at 02:00 PM |
First Susan B. Anthony’s list endorsed Carly Fiorina in the Republican Senate primary here in California, and now via Flash Report we find that the California Pro-Life Council, the California affiliate of National Right to Life, has joined in endorsing Fiorina. This comes after she snagged Tom Coburn’s support. Clearly, behind closed doors she’s convincing people. At this point I’d love to be able to | Read More »

Ray Haynes at Flash Report has a subtle hit up on somebody running for office this year: The key years for the current budget are the 06-07 and the 07-08 budgets[....] As critical to the current crisis, however, is the 07-08 budget. A legislator, or former legislator that voted for 07-08 budget, and who is now running for office, who claims to be a fiscal | Read More »
Putting to bed that whole racial profiling deal
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | April 29th at 12:02 AM |
The absolutely worst argument I keep hearing against Arizona’s law banning illegal aliens, is that somehow it was going to be racist in its implementation. A bunch of ignorant folk seem to have this idea about those of us in the southwest who oppose illegal immigration, that we see brown-skinned folk and think illegal! I’ve been dismissing this idea since I first ran into it, | Read More »

Checking in on the California Senate Primary
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | April 15th at 11:30 PM |
Since my last look at the polling in the California Senate Primary we’ve had no new primary polls, though in the general Rasmussen now shows Babs Boxer running poorly against all three Republicans. +2 over Tom Campbell, +3 over Chuck DeVore, and +4 over Carly Fiorina are not the numbers three term incumbent Democrats should be pulling in a state where Democrats capable of beating | Read More »
USC/LA Times poll of California races
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | April 5th at 02:19 PM |
USC and the LA Times polled some of the major California statewide races. The results, provided by pollsters Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and American Viewpoint, seem generally in line with what we’ve seen so far: Campbell and Fiorina are in a close primary race, lagged by DeVore. Boxer can’t reach 50. Whitman cruises in the primary. The big news to my eye is that Jerry Brown | Read More »

For the Record: John Campbell on his own Amendment

Here is the amendment that Tom Campbell asked John Campbell to withdraw, an amendment that would have withdrawn funding for a number of NSF grants. These aren’t earmarks, but is this wise spending?
Democrat worries showing up in their work
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | April 1st at 08:23 PM |
This is Dana Rohrabacher, California Republican representing the 46th Congressional District. This is the title of a press release put out by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, per the LA Times: Not an April Fools’ Day Joke: Representative Dana Rohrabacher Caught Trying to Take Credit for Jobs She Voted Against It’s clear that the Democrats have done so little research on their targeted Republicans that | Read More »
