Sometimes a candidate is more than we expect
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 8th at 10:00 AM |
During the California Senate primary, my major criticisms of Carly Fiorina were that she had no public track record to back her on the issues, and that as a novice campaigner she was liable to make mistakes and lose a winnable race. During the race I didn’t quite give her the Tom Campbell treatment, but I gave Chuck DeVore all the support I could. During | Read More »

With 17% reporting: Yes, friends, we can rejoice that Orly Taitz, exalted birtherlord, is being rejected tonight, losing in the Secretary of State primary 75-25 to Damon Dunn. Meg Whitman runs away in the Governor’s race 65-26. Schwarzeneggerite Abel Maldonaldo gets the drop on conservative favorite Sam Aanestad 46-28 for LtGov. Boxer crushes Kaus 78-6. Palin shapes two races
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | May 25th at 05:04 PM |
Having attended a speech of Nikki Haley’s in Atlanta last year, her run for Governor of South Carolina is one I’ve followed. Living here, I’ve also watched the California Senate race. Both situations seemed to be stable: Haley was stuck in fourth, while in California Tom Campbell was staying ahead of second place Carly Fiorina. Then Sarah Palin intervened, and both Haley and Fiorina shot | Read More »

Two minute warning in the California Senate Primary
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | May 25th at 02:03 AM |
Two polls on the California Senate Republican primary caught my attention today. I’ve been holding off posting on this race with my poll analysis hat on, because I wasn’t sure I could trust myself to be even handed enough. But these two polls, coming as they are 15 days before election day, are interesting enough that I have to try. They could hardly be more | Read More »

Carly Fiorina rakes in the pro-life endorsements
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | May 4th at 02:00 PM |
First Susan B. Anthony’s list endorsed Carly Fiorina in the Republican Senate primary here in California, and now via Flash Report we find that the California Pro-Life Council, the California affiliate of National Right to Life, has joined in endorsing Fiorina. This comes after she snagged Tom Coburn’s support. Clearly, behind closed doors she’s convincing people. At this point I’d love to be able to | Read More »

Checking in on the California Senate Primary
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | April 15th at 11:30 PM |
Since my last look at the polling in the California Senate Primary we’ve had no new primary polls, though in the general Rasmussen now shows Babs Boxer running poorly against all three Republicans. +2 over Tom Campbell, +3 over Chuck DeVore, and +4 over Carly Fiorina are not the numbers three term incumbent Democrats should be pulling in a state where Democrats capable of beating | Read More »
USC/LA Times poll of California races
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | April 5th at 02:19 PM |
USC and the LA Times polled some of the major California statewide races. The results, provided by pollsters Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and American Viewpoint, seem generally in line with what we’ve seen so far: Campbell and Fiorina are in a close primary race, lagged by DeVore. Boxer can’t reach 50. Whitman cruises in the primary. The big news to my eye is that Jerry Brown | Read More »

For the Record: John Campbell on his own Amendment
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | April 1st at 09:28 PM |
Here is the amendment that Tom Campbell asked John Campbell to withdraw, an amendment that would have withdrawn funding for a number of NSF grants. These aren’t earmarks, but is this wise spending?
Tom Campbell lobbied for earmarks [not. Updated]
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | April 1st at 04:30 PM |
Updated: I’ve been sent a passage from the Congressional record illustrating that the specific spending Tom Campbell defended was not an earmark, but rather an NSF grant. So, while it makes sense that John Campbell’s amendment would target such a thing as wasteful spending, this specific amendment that Tom Campbell opposed addressed “peer reviewed” grants, not requests by members of Congress. Different process. John Campbell | Read More »
Barbara Boxer is in the Fight of her Political Life
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | March 18th at 05:59 PM |
On the heels of a Rasmussen poll suggesting Democrats should worry about Senator Barbara Boxer’s re-election chances, comes worse news from Field for the three term incumbent. The raw numbers: Campbell 44/Boxer 43, Fiorina 44/Boxer 45, DeVore 41/Boxer 45, 3.7% Margin of Error. My model’s win percentages: DeVore 29% , Fiorina 44%, and Campbell 55%.
Democrats running scared in California (DOOM!)
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | March 17th at 09:25 PM |
One point I initially missed in my previous article on the California Senate race (Cross-posted to RedState), and only later pointed out on Twitter, was that the Democrats should be scared to death about the current polling of Babs Boxer versus the Republicans. Our worst result against her right now gives us a one in four chance to win. One in four sounds poor, but | Read More »

Rasmussen Polls the California Senate Race
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | March 16th at 02:03 PM |
The California Republican primary race to determine Barbara Boxer’s challenger is getting heated. And while all of us in the state have our biases and preferences, here’s what my cold, hard math says about Rasmussen’s latest poll. As with last month, the poll again covers all three likely challengers to Barbara Boxer. It shows Fiorina 40/Boxer 46, DeVore 40/Boxer 46, Campbell 41/Boxer 43. All have | Read More »
Tom Campbell’s story still doesn’t check out
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | March 12th at 11:26 PM |
This is not a straightforward point to make, and takes a little dot connecting, but I think that Tom Campbell’s excuses for defending Sami Al-Arian are falling apart. At the California Republican Party Convention currently under way, Tom Campbell claimed that he would not have written the 2002 letter for Al-Arian had he known that the man called for “Death to Israel,” implying it was | Read More »
Fiorina to Campbell: Stop lying about your terrorism record
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | March 7th at 03:28 PM |
The California Senate race is becoming a real free for all, as the candidates go after each other’s records with gusto, and it appears that Tom Campbell is taking the worst of it. It’s not a good sign when a candidate has to say that he does not help terrorists. What’s worse for him is that Carly Fiorina is not letting it go at that. | Read More »
I’ll have my Demon Sheep Well Done
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | March 1st at 04:01 PM |
How do you like your Demon Sheep cooked? Or maybe you prefer him squished, mocked, or just plain sheared? Whatever your preference, today’s the day to Finish Him! with a hop on over to Chuck DeVore‘s new Demon Sheep extermination website. The California Senate primary has heated up in recent weeks. After Tom Campbell tucked tail from the Governor’s race, he immediately drew fire from | Read More »

Chuck DeVore Money Bomb Today
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | February 1st at 11:30 AM |
Chuck DeVore has a money bomb going today to aid his effort to humble and unseat Babs Boxer. I hope the right can flex some muscle and support him. This is the part where I’m supposed to tell you he’s another Marco Rubio, Doug Hoffman, or Scott Brown. I won’t. Every candidate has his own strengths and weaknesses, although DeVore has been outspoken in support | Read More »
An overview of California’s “other” race
By: Neil Stevens (Diary) | September 19th at 11:38 AM |
California’s race for the Senate is easy for people all across the country to care about, but we’re also going to elect a new Governor next year. Term limited or not, Governor Schwarzenegger has burned his bridges with most of the party and likely will never seek elective office again. So it’s an open seat, and an open field for both parties this time around. | Read More »
