Tech at Night: Defending Google from a new accusation, even as I support accountability for the old

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  August 13th at 11:00 PM  |

Time to defend Google: It’s unfair to attack them for excluding Youtube from its “anti-piracy” penalties, when they’re also excluding every other popular site driven by user-generated content. Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Youtube are four sites that, whether Google-owned or not, need to be indexed and valued to a degree. The point of the penalty is to punish illegitimate sites, not legitimate sites with some | Read More »

Tech at Night, 5am edition: Embattled Harry Reid fails on Lieberman-Collins, property rights online must be protected, Reagan.com email

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  August 7th at 03:30 AM  |

We had no Tech at Night on Friday becuase I was at the Gathering in Jacksonville. Hope those who went enjoyed it, and that those who weren’t able to attend can make it next year! So, Harry Reid offered to let Republicans fix Lieberman-Collins. Republicans took him up on that, and he was unhappy. So he tried to ram it through after all. Republicans objected, | Read More »

Tech at Night: My support for the so-called Marketplace Fairness Act

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  July 19th at 03:00 AM  |

So, the Marketplace Fairness Act. Ben Domenech and Francis Cianfrocca recently went off on it on Coffee and Markets, which is a great series to listen to. Having an opportunity to block out time to listen to it is probably the best part of having a 2.5 hour commute from Arlington to Purcellville (and then 2.5 hours back). I support the bill, and the interstate | Read More »

Tech at Night: LightSquared debates, FCC subsidizing and raising prices, Seven figure fine for Google?

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  May 5th at 02:00 AM  |

So, LightSquared. It’s a funny turn this whole thing has taken. Way back at the start, when I was excited for LightSquared’s potential as a 4G competitor, I was told that they were the next Solyndra. Then, when the Obama administration and LightSquared both reacted badly to requests for oversight, I was convinced. Now, though, defenders on the right are cropping up again for LightSquared. | Read More »

Tech at Night: Illegal Amazon Taxes fail, DeMint modernizing cable, thorny copyright issues

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  April 10th at 12:30 AM  |

Monday night, as promised, we still have some catch up work to do. So let’s start with those Amazon Taxes, those Internet sales taxes of dubious Constitutionality. Colorado’s got tossed in federal court and Illinois’s didn’t raise any money. Obeying the Constitution counts, folks. Pass a true interstate compact through the Congress first. Also as promised, there’s the matter of the Next Generation Television Marketplace | Read More »

Tech at Night: Schumer’s bad idea, Victory over Fairness Doctrine, Chinese attacks on our networks

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  August 22nd at 10:00 PM  |

What would be a Monday without Democrats wanting to expand government by passing new laws and regulations? Some people aren’t careful with their things and/or their data, so Chuckie Schumer thinks there oughta be a law. I like CTIA’s response to that: CTIA understands that when consumers have their mobile devices lost or stolen, it is an unfortunate situation as they often contain a lot | Read More »

Tech at Night: Free Press under pressure, Cyberterrorists get arrested, Same old FCC

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  June 11th at 03:30 AM  |

Free Press is getting the heat. It’s been exposed through FOIA that the far left front group was secretly coordinating media strategy with people at the FCC, including Commissioner Michael Copps. So when Copps makes a statement about media regulation, Free Press’s pet issue, I have to assume they wrote it for him. Media Reform is their code for nationalization of the press, after all. | Read More »

Tech at Night: Net Neutrality, FCC, iPad

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  March 5th at 12:30 AM  |

Good evening, I wrote in my best Alfred Hitchcock impression. Top story as we go into the weekend: our friendly neighborhood House Republicans are pressing on with their oversight of the FCC and Net Neutrality in particular. The resolution disapproving of Net Neutrality is postponed, but instead we’re getting pressure on the FCC to justify its actions economically. Good on Greg Walden, Fred Upton, and | Read More »

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  January 19th at 11:30 PM  |

I went ahead and took Martin Luther King day off, so it’s a double dose of stories to cover tonight. Though first, in case you missed it, make sure to see my post today on Marsha Blackburn‘s call to action against stifling, destabilizing Internet and technology regulation. Other than that, the big story this week so far has been the FCC finally approving the NBC | Read More »

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  August 18th at 11:30 PM  |

Good evening. A story I expect to hear more about is this a proposed subsidy for radio stations and the RIAA both of some sort of legal requirement for new cellular phones to include an FM radio receiver. Such a requirement would raise costs on everyone, lower innovation and even basic differentiation options, and be nothing but a detriment to anyone who shops for cellular | Read More »

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  August 9th at 11:00 PM  |

Today Google and Verizon changed the landscape of the Net Neutrality debate in America, by putting out a joint proposal* for FCC Internet regulation. This is a proposal that ideally should be implemented by the Congress, which has the proper authority, and as described I support it. The fact that I’m fine with it of course means, as I predicted, the fringe radicals at Free | Read More »

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  July 12th at 10:30 PM  |

On Friday, I was assured in the comments that Google didn’t actually want to gather any data, that it was purely accidental and not “a conspiracy.” Oops: Google is actually seeking even more Wifi data through the FCC. Also, Darrell Issa isn’t letting the Andrew McLaughlin scandal die quietly, and Google’s need for insider Net Neutrality lobbying may become apparent in Tech at Night for | Read More »

How nervous are the Democrats getting?

By: Neil Stevens (Diary)  |  September 13th at 08:28 AM  |

I’m getting a sense that the Democrats are becoming nervous: Months after I posted a couple of anti-Obama videos, only now am I getting a series of semi-literate critical comments on YouTube on my account and my videos. I tend to delete these things, but in they come. It makes me smile.
