Life’s Not Fair, Get Used To It

We don't get to choose the battlefield.

From the time my children were little, I’ve worked hard to get them to understand this concept. I’ve repeated it so many times that I know they now cringe any time they say “That’s not fair!”, because they know what’s coming as soon as those words leave their mouth. It’s something that I believe we’ve forgotten as a party, and need to embed in our political subconscious.

For as long as I can remember, the mainstream media organizations have treated the parties differently. They are only too willing to cover stories for one that they are also perfectly fine with ignoring for the other. I give you three examples of this phenomenon.

Breaking the Public Trust
Over a year ago, William Jefferson (D-LA-2) was indicted for accepting bribes. Six months ago, Ted Stevens (R-AK) was indicted for accepting for falsely reporting income. Both leaders have broken the public’s trust, but Congressman Jefferson’s bribery charges are much more serious. Yet, even before Senator Stevens’ conviction, the media treated his the more serious, while mostly ignoring Jefferson’s problems.

Sexual Misconduct
Consider the difference between how congressman Barney Frank, who’s partner was convicted of running a prostitution ring from his house was treated vs. congressman Mark Foley who sent inappropriate emails and instant messages to underage congressional pages. Personally, I consider the latter to be worse since it involved minors, but even senator Larry Craig was treated worse by the media for his actions.

Gaffes
The recent Presidential campaigns highlighted the differences in how the candidates were treated when they misspoke. Every gaffe from Obama (57 States) and Biden (TV in 1929, 3 Words) were mostly ignored, while the media was more than willing to invent things and propagate rumors about missteps by McCain and especially Palin.

The fact is, we are not on an even playing field, and we never will be. The media is now openly the propaganda wing of the Democratic Party; the general public admits this, yet it makes no difference in how they vote.

This is the political arena in which we toil, and it is not going to change any time soon. Some think it is enough to enlighten the masses. Surely, once they realize how unfair the playing field is, they will demand that it change. As we have seen in the last election, this just isn’t the case. We need a new strategy to work in this environment. To that end, I make the following proposals:

Stop whining about how unfair things are.
People don’t like to hear others whine, even if they have a legitimate case. Sure, the traditional media is against us. Whining about it not only doesn’t change that; it just turns people off. Instead, we need to do our best to get our story out in other ways, such as letters to the editor, blogs, conservative radio, and word-of-mouth. We can also use these means to answer the slurs against conservatism in general, and our candidates in particular.

Find a modern way to tell our ancient story.
Sure, it’s a cliché, but I think everyone here will agree that conservatism works every time it’s tried. I’ve heard many times over the course of the past few months that it’s much easier to sound-bite liberal talking points than conservative ones. Quite frankly, it doesn’t matter. We must find a way to communicate conservative points, and why they are better than liberal ones, in thirty seconds. It won’t be easy, but I believe it can be done.

We need to hit some singles first.
Sorry for the baseball analogy, but it is my favorite game. When you’re down eight runs, it’s not the time to hit the long ball. There aren’t any eight-run hits in this game. We’re down about as low as we can be, so it’s time to concentrate on the issues we think we can win. This means we’ve got to stop whining when our pet issue isn’t being addressed. For instance, how about we concern ourselves with making sure that women considering abortion have access to all the information they need before making that decision instead of going straight to the Human Life Amendment? There are other examples I could give, but I believe you get the point.

We need to be positive.
I hear people all the time saying we need to stop the negative campaigning. Sure, people love a good train wreck, but ultimately the positive message won this time (empty as it may have been). We’ve got to stop talking about what’s wrong with the other side and start talking about what’s right about ours. We need to constantly promote the positive conservative message of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity.

We have to break up the circular firing squad.
We need to stop attacking each other. Every issue cannot (and doesn’t need to) be addressed at the same time. That means your issue may have to wait. If we continue to attack each other when we don’t get our way, or disagree over the minutiae of each minor point, we’re never going to progress. Also, we also need to call out conservative pundits when they aren’t being conservative. We need to do what we can to let people know that certain experts don’t represent us. We have to be relentless about this like RedState was about Andrew Sullivan at The Atlantic for supporting the other side. We’ve either got to run these people out of business or force them to fully and openly admit they are not of us.

I believe we’ve got to constantly remember that life’s not fair, and we had better get used to it, otherwise, we’ll never be able to promote the freedom and opportunity that conservatism brings again.

Small point but important…If I’m wrong my apologies.

You are correct.

I knew that, but wrote senator anyway. Thanks for the heads up (and for the recommend), I fixed it.

Well written post that made me think a little more about the pragmatic approach to politics.

I especially like your paragraph on hitting a “single” instead of a home run. I had a good discussion recently with seattle-ite about the need to change the argument of the abortion issue (or almost all other conservative issues) to better control and influence the debate (THEREBY SAVING LIVES).

The only thing I would like to hear more of is how we are to deal with potentially disastrous law breaking/bending by Democrats (ex. Fannie Mae/ Freddie Mac).

It seems the only thing that has worked is to return fire with both barrels before the Democrats get a chance to hide what they have done or control the debate, (ex. Clinton Healthcare, Immigration, etc.)

We need to stop stopping.

NightTwister (Diary) Saturday, November 8th at 1:09PM EDT (link)

There were several that brought up the issue of Freddie/Fannie over the past few years (including McCain), but when bills were stalled they all stopped talking.

We have to be relentless about telling the public about these problems, and their likely results so that when things blow up like they did everyone knows who created the problem and who tried to fix it.

Thanks for the kind words, and if no one else has said it yet, welcome to RedState.

Thank you. I feel welcomed. Even by those who may not agree with what I write.

We need to get better at relentlessly pursuing Democratic mischief, as I suspect they are going to do everything legal and illegal to prevent another Republican Revolution in 2010.

I am a big fan of trying to understand and live conservatism, in order to be more relentless and passionate about it.

The more you know about something, the more you love it (or hate it which is almost like love).

Your right about top not talking about issues...

Judges were a huge contributing factor when it came to turning out values votes in the 2004 elections…Bush won as a result…then the Dems went back to blocking every one of Bush’s nominees and after 2006 they frozen practically every single appointment to the bench…Where is the outcry from Republicans in the Senate?

Where are the Republicans complaining about Kelo, the Democrat Culture of Corruption, the Democrat obstruction on domestic production of oil, the pending expiration of the Bush tax cuts and that’s before Obama raises taxes even more, Where are the Republicans raising hell about the fact that the government is using the money voted for under the bailout isn’t being used to free up liquidity in the market but to by stock and nationalize our banking system, what about the Democrat Promise in 2006 to end earmarks and the fact that they haven’t even tried to address it, and on and on and on!

whining,I still want to see a valid birth certificate or O’s renewed pledge(whatever). Seems to me if you use an Indonesian passport in 1981 for a trip to Pok-e-stan,he likes to brag about, there is still an unanswered issue here.

…between whining and calling out people (or the MSM) when they’re being less than even-handed.

I agree that whining gets old fast, and you can’t just say, “That’s not fair” (unless you’re Joe “is that a serious question” Biden apparently).

John McCain played “nice” with the MSM and I think he was shocked when they turned on him once he was the GOP nominee. No big mystery there. They loved you when you were bucking Republicans John, but once you were the standard bearer going up against The One, they had no use for you.

Need to pick your spots and back it up with examples of blatant hypocrisy. I still think that Americans believe in basic fairness, and one thing most Americans detest is having a position forced down their collective throat.

I’m all for calling them out on their lies, but that can’t be our entire strategy.

I sent several messagea to McCain camp about ads that I thought crossed the line (notably the one about Obama favoring sex education for kindergartners. It was in poor taste and was far too easy to rebut).

Campaign spent too much time on defense this past election without trying to push positive aspects of their plans.

Health care was a prime example. McCain did a dismal job in explaining his plan and spent the whole time trying to answer the Obama camp’s claim that he was taxing medical benefits for the first time in history.

First off, I thought he could have modified his plan so that if you still opted to stay in your employer’s plan, your medical premiums would still be treated as pre-tax (no difference from current treatment). That would have taken the teeth out of Obama’s prime argument against his plan. His plan offered the new benefit of being able to go out and get any plan you wanted while still offering the incentive of a tax credit, which you can’t get today. There were other points to be made, such as if you found a good plan outside your employer than there would be no disruption when and if you switched jobs. I never heard points like that raised.

As Bing Crosby said, “You’ve got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negatives, latch on to the affirmative, don’t mess with Mr In-between.”

McCain’s message was often muddled.

We need to start saying we are in favor of abortions because it is the libs who are killing their own babies. Eventually, if we conservatives all have at least three children, we will rule. They will howl, and the only way that they can go against us is to not have an abortion

all we have to do is leap tall buildings...

RborisT (Diary) Wednesday, November 12th at 8:12PM EDT (link)

Wow where to begin? I’ll pick just two:

First, This would be all fine if we were talking about biased refs at a high school football game! We just lost the Presidency BECAUSE of the msm!

Don’t whine just work harder?

Elections today are like a track race where the hurdles are ten feet for one runner, and two feet for the other.

Yes, there are some Reagan-like, conservative super-candidates who can still leap tall reporters at a single bound, and win against the odds. But most are just ordinary conservative people running to help the country. They stand little chance when the race is so thoroughly rigged against them.

Second, There is a design behind this incredible bias, what Peter Ferrara today called “party controlled press”; the design is to overthrow our freedom. To remake America as another socialist experiment. It is underway! How long before elections will be mere formality?

“Find a modern way to tell our ancient story.”

The press no longer allows conservative stories to be told. How do we get the story out?

Please read my post on RS today on this isuue, let me know what you think:

Overthrow the MSM In Selected States Near You

...in a single bound

There are some fantastic ideas here. Night Twister, great insights into the arguments, positions, and the media hurdles that conservatives face, both now and in the future.

However, I can’t help but wonder why conservatives in general, and R’s in particular, would continue to court the MSM when trying to get these very important messages to the people.

I gave up on the MSM in 1992. I started with CNN, and then moved down the channels, successively eliminating news outlets as their bias became increasingly more vocal. I turned to a mixture of talk-radio, magazines, newspapers ( such as the WSJ), and the Internet. I believe that I have stayed fairly abreast of current affairs, economic issues, and the culture war. Yet very rarely have I paid attention to the MSM; except for an occasional wander through TV-land. Well, at least until my blood-pressure demands I leave it behind .

What I’m trying to say is, in this day and age of technology, the MSM is the dinosaur waiting for the inevitable comet. Why not make better use of this technology and “leap-frog” the MSM? Sites such as this one, as well as the local site you mentioned, should be stressed. As many links as possible should be attached to sites that cater to the conservative Hispanic, or African-American. If you can be a part of the R strategy, point them to the web as their basic means of grass-roots support and communication. (I don’t believe McCain/Palin did a very effective job. R’s have to do it better.

I’m not saying abandon the MSM when they can be used (as rarely as that may be) but rather marginalize them, as they have done to Conservatives for over 40 years. Show the people how “Pravda-like” they have been, and that they are only getting worse. (I mean, how much credibility can Chris Matthews possess with anyone now that he is no more than a “Commissar” for the Obama administration? Or am I alone in that assessment?)

Any R’s out here who are not technologically-challenged (as I) please feel free to elaborate. We need to win each battle, as well as the war. And the only way that will happen is to get the message out, without the MSM bias attached.
