After Bachmann and Perry dropped out of this year’s presidential race, followed by Huntsman, I felt there was no one that I, as a Christian conservative, could support. Looking at what I felt was a sorry crop of remaining candidates, I came to the conclusion that although I couldn’t see it yet, there was surely one candidate who fit God’s criteria (whether or not he fit mine) . . . that one of them must be qualified to serve God’s purpose, whether I could understand God’s rationale for choosing that candidate, or not. So I began praying for God to either send us a better candidate, or to show us which of the remaining candidates was His choice, and that either way, “Thy will be done.” Since I have begun praying thusly, I have been a lot less panicky about the outcome of this year’s election.
Many are worried that a particular candidate lacks either the temperament or the experience or the __________ (fill in the quality that is your #1 priority in a candidate) to be elected president. But I keep thinking about the leaders God chose in the Bible: He voted for Joseph, even though Joseph was hated so much by his fellow Republicans that they sold him into slavery; He voted for Moses, even though Moses was a poor speaker and did poorly in debates; He voted for Deborah, even though the country had never had a female president; He voted for Gideon, even though Gideon’s father practiced the wrong religion; He voted for Samson, even though Samson flip-flopped on the true source of his incredible strength; He voted for David, even though David committed not only adultery but murder as well; He voted for Solomon, even though Solomon became so wealthy he could not relate to the masses; He voted for Josiah, even though Josiah was quite young and had no executive experience; He voted for Peter, even though Peter was a racial/religious bigot; He voted for Paul, even though Paul was too extreme in his religious convictions; and He voted for John the Baptist, even though due to John’s diet, wardrobe and residential eccentricities, many people must have thought him to be nothing but a crazy lunatic. God chose each of these “candidates” because they fit His purpose at a time when His people were in desperate need of a good leader.
I just think we all need to put away our preconceived notions about what makes a good candidate and turn it over to God to decide. Because truly, He’s going to make that decision anyway, and it will bode so much better for our country if the majority of us make that acknowledgement to Him in our prayers each day and stop acting as if the choice were ours to make.
I plan not to make my final assessment as to who gets my vote until the day of my state’s primary, in order to give me more time to discern God’s will for me. However, this comment from RPM during the live discussion on RedState last Tuesday night struck a chord with me: “[C]onservatism is fundamentally about character. Newt’s is questionable. Mitt’s debatable. Rick’s very defendable.” I’m guessing the first thing God looks at when choosing leaders is character, but that’s just me. And if you did not catch Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday morning, he spent at least the first hour and a half of his program talking about how Santorum is the true conservative left in the race. If Rush Limbaugh cannot recognize a true conservative, then we are truly sunk.
I know many Republicans are depressed about our primary choices this year; I had the same depressed feelings myself until just the last few days. Now I’m getting rather excited to see whom God might choose to lead our country back to sanity. I was especially enthused about rsklaroff’s A Modest “Proposal” diary that he posted on Thursday (http://www.redstate.com/rsklaroff/2012/02/09/a-modest-proposal/). What better way to unite our party than to have several of the past and present candidates as members of Team R 2012, whether as presidential candidate, vice-presidential candidate or cabinet member? In my opinion, Gingrich and Santorum should go ahead and pick as many cabinet members from this year’s crop of candidates as is practical and feasible . . . can you imagine the fear that would grip Obama’s heart should he see that we had stopped fighting each other and were united in fighting him?
I ask my fellow RedStaters not to discount God’s ability to “throw” the election to an “unelectable” candidate, should He so desire. Perhaps He’s waiting to see if we’re willing to trust Him to do just that . . .

I believe the Bible shows that God is less likely to destroy a righteous nation than an unrighteous one, and I’m afraid to say that from my viewpoint, America doesn’t always look very righteous. Possibly God will see our acknowledgement that we are not in control of the election as a sign that we are trying to be more righteous.

Rather than piously imputing divine motivation behind whatever the result is, we should be praying that God lets us know what he wants regarding politics, act accordingly, and own up to our mistakes. IMO, it’s a huge cop-out to simply assume that the result of a given election was divine destiny: in many cases, it was the result of a deviation from God’s plan, not His divine purpose, which led to the result in question. Let’s not absolve responsibility for what God has entrusted to us by simply pegging the results on him.

And what you said about owning up to our mistakes is right in line with my thoughts about acknowledging by way of our prayers that we can’t do it alone, that we need His help. You have probably heard the phrase: “Pray as if everything depends on God, but act as if everything depends on you”; I just think we need a little more of that.
But the main focus of my diary was to point out the fact that just because none of the candidates is perfect does not mean that we are necessarily doomed as a nation, as long as we do not leave God out of the equation.

In Romans 1:18-32, God gives them over to what they want and the people continue to spiral downward until their society is a cesspool.
In the tale of the prodigal son, the son is given everything he wants until he ends up envying the pigs. Then he returns to the father.
I hope we are like the prodigal son and that we as a people finally wake up and see the mess we have created by following our own desires and not honoring Him. Then, hopefully, we will return.
With that being said, God can certainly use any of the candidates. God is sovereign over all.
The Good Guys Do Not Always Win

Many moons ago, William F. Buckley wrote an essay which wondered at the beginning whether one could consciously realize that one was living in a declining age, and if you could realize such, whether therefore you could do anything about it.
The answer from assorted eras is mixed:
As a classicist, I can point to the rise of various types democracies in ancient Greece, and show that the spread of such governments was limited, and that eventually they failed for assorted reasons. Sparta, the slave state, defeats Athens the democracy (the “good guys”) and eventually Philip and Alexander of Macedonia conquer them all.
Were there some who saw clouds on the horizon? Oh yes! Demosthenes famously spoke out against appeasement of Philip.
The Athenians and other states were conquered anyway.
I can show you that the Roman Republic, a state which limited voting and participation by the people, did nicely for hundreds of years, but then devolved into chronic civil war, dictatorships, assassinations, and then into imperial autocracy and bureaucracy, while seeming to be quite successful from the outside.
And yet the termites were gnawing away: were any Romans nervous about the condition of the state and of society? Yes, again! Tacitus, Juvenal, Ammianus Marcellinus , and Ausonius were all “crying in the wilderness” or attempting to tape Humpty Dumpty back together again. But we know that barbarism won the day.
In more recent times, of course, the British saw their Pax Britannica, such as it was (how peaceful were the 18th and 19th centuries really? The Crimean and Franco-Prussian Wars may have been short, but were large and brutal.), deteriorate into World Wars I and II, aided by socialist pacifism at home and Communism and Fascism abroad.
What we may be seeing in America now is that split-second before a fatal rear-end collision slowed down immensely: everything you should have done to avoid the collision becomes obvious, and regret and disbelief a cry for help from God all come screaming from your mouth, but nothing can be done about the inevitable laws of physics.
Previous choices must have their results: choices for ever larger debt without consequences, choices for eternal victimhood, choices for the primacy of ego, selfishness, envy, class hatred, cowardice, and sloth.
I am an optimistic pessimist: I do not know whether we can still apply the brakes hard enough, whether we have enough time to turn the steering wheel and avoid the collision.
But I do know that we must attempt to push the brake to the floor and with all our strength turn that wheel to the right and yes, we must certainly cry out for divine intervention, knowing that the belief behind the cry itself is what gives us extra strength.
All of that should be obvious. Throwing up our hands in horror and letting go of the wheel and screaming in panic and despair will doom us absolutely.

God only spared Lot and his family from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and even his wife, while making it out of the city, was not obedient and looked back, ultimately reaping the destruction upon herself that was sewn on the cities of sin.
Prayer and discernment with God’s help, will be our only route of possible escape from this morass we have allowed ourselves to become entangled in. If it ultimately collapses, I hope that there is a remnant who can escape to carry on a renewed and revitalized conservatism in a new land. If we are empowered to save the nation from destruction, I pray we are strong enough, smart enough, and faithful enough to hold the course we must follow steadily and with resolve.

There is no human that has not been a sinner, and fallen off God’s wagon so to speak. If God was in charge of elections, why do we have a Marxist currently residing in the WH? I will bet that many of those that voted for Obama also thought they were following God’s word. God gave choices to humans, some follow one path, some follow another, but, I would bet that every Christian, who has chosen one candidate or another thinks they are doing the right thing, including those that support Obama.
If some find solace in looking for a message from God in order to make their choice for the next president, all power to them. I prefer to believe that God made things a whole lot more complex than that. I don’t think God would want to be involved in presidential elections. He didn’t strike Judas down for a reason, even though he could have.
God makes the ultimate choice.

It should not be shocking this resulted in President Obama. As Leon’s post above shows, the government we would choose, and the government God ultimately gives us, can be quite different. What have we done before God to deserve great government?
Where I agree with you, is that this doesn’t excuse us from making the best choices we can this election. We have been granted to be free voters rather than a tyrant’s slaves. We should give thanks and use our gifts to help others. But where I agree with the original post, is that despair is inappropriate when God rules from heaven.
Maybe it depends on how you look at it.

Sometimes he just lets us THINK we are.
If our Father sees even a lowly sparrow fall and has numbered the very hairs on our heads (which probably didn’t take so long in my case), why would He not care what happens to us in our daily lives? And with our government’s having taken so much control of our daily lives, through the presidents we have elected in recent years, I can see no better venue for God to show His concern for us.
And aren’t we glad that God allowed Judas to do what he did? I could never understand people who hated the Jews because “they” killed our Lord . . . where would we all be if our Lord (also a Jew, which some seem to forget) had not been allowed to be the sacrificial Lamb in our stead. As far as why we have Obama around our necks today, please see my comment to 10ab above.

I am distressed over the situation our great country is in, but I do not pray for God to send us a conservative candidate.
Our Founding Fathers gained victory over the British empire because they were men of good conscience, noble cause and fervently carried Jesus in their hearts. Our independence from the British is nothing short of a miracle due to this, I believe.
All of us out here are doing everything we can to fight the evil around us. That is what God wants us to do. If I pray for anything, I pray for people to seek the truth in the ways of the Lord, and that He might find His way into their hearts. If more people would walk in the ways of the Lord, many good things will happen for us.
In the beginning, God created earth to be an extension of his vast Kingdom and his LOVE was so great that he wanted to share it with man, whom he created in his own image and likeness and gave him free will.

Be that as it is, I also firmly believe that God can work though any person. He worked through the hardness of Pharoah’s heart, etc.
In this instance we are speaking of the current crop of presidential candidates. As a Bible believing Christian I can say with certainty that I will NOT be voting for any of them just because he claims to be a great Christian or that he is the most pro-life. I want a pro-life Christian, but I also want more. What I do not want is another Republican president who is more of a statist than a conservative and who will lay the groundwork for the next Obama.
I have made my choice, although it is not supremely enthusiastic. I choose Newt. As detailed in another reply I made to a different threat I choose him because he has the most detailed, conservative plan to deal with our current crisis. His ideas are conservative, etc.
As for whom God will vote, I think He is voting for us – in that He is telling us that we need to accept responsibility for ourselves and step up to the plate. We need to stay engaged after the election and hold the new President and Congress accountable and fight them tooth and nail when required to get conservative solutions enacted. We need to be Moral enough to be able to understand and say that ‘it is not right for me to take the bread earned by another from his mouth so that we can have free cell phones, internet, corporate welfare, faith based intiatives, free health care, lavish retirements, etc’. Perhaps instead of taking those food stamps I should buckle down, work two jobs, go to school and use my hardship as an encouragement to improve my lot in life so that I am no longer a burden to my fellow citizens. Instead of using my position as a powerful business owner to encourage my reps to pass laws that help me and crush my competition I should form a group that encourages free competition at all levels knowing that fair competition can only help my business and that the gov’t really does bite the hand that feeds it!
If We do not continue for fight for conservative ideas and solutions then we will lose. It is that simple. And we are going to have to continue to fight, make no mistake about that. For no matter which imperfect person we elect, the powers that be (those who currently know how to profit from the money currently being spent in DC and in your state capitals) will fight those we elect with all that they have to keep the status quo or some version thereof. If we don’t have the will to fight even harder then we really do not deserve to have a Republic.
Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

Wade, expand the rights of the majority to allow expressions of religion in public as long as they did not favor one version of Christianity over another (i.e 10 Commandments). Honestly, I’m more than sympathetic with his interest in making sure that no business, pharmacist or insurance company need cover contraception if it is against their faith. People give him a lot of hate about his position on gays, but truly, where does it stop? Decriminalizing homosexuality led to calls for marriage, and where will it end? Polygamy’s next, and then polyandry?
This country has moved so far in the direction of individual rights, that we forget the family is the fundamental unit. Santorum would restore a little balance by strengthening the traditional family even at the expense of individual selfishness.

America is nothing before God, worthless. God can speak and kings are disposed. People are the most important thing to God; not country; not elections; not Presidents. Do not mock God and say whom He would chose.
God ordains the leaders of nations, therefore, whether you like it or not He ordained Obama to be the President. But don’t fret over that either. He also appointed King Saul, King Mannasas, Hitler, Stalin, Nero, and King George.
Maybe BHO is ment to wake up the Christians in America to become vigilant and know what the real anti-christ will be like.
