The Private Life of Governor Rick Perry

Much of Governor Rick Perry’s political positions are becoming well known to those of us who are politically active. I have been researching into many of the GOP candidates that are running for the nomination. It is one thing to determine what a candidate stands for on the issues, it’s another to see what they have done in the privacy of their personal lives.

Very few of us completely agree on every issue that might come up in life. We have grown up with different life experiences and each of us react differently to those situations. To me, what a person does in relation to others without any prompting or political gain, says so much more about a persons character and beliefs than what they claim to believe in public. To whit, the reason for this article.

The personal history of Rick Perry is more diverse than what people might believe. The following is just a few brief glimpses into Perry’s long road he has toed to date. Nothing is more true than when Perry said “If you want to see God laugh, just tell him your plans.”

Rick Perry grew up in a very rural area of Texas, living and working with his parents, as most farming families do up till this day. Some of the early influences were the Boy Scouts and earning the Eagle Scout award, the 4H program, and learning to play the piano. All of this requires a person to have initiative and a work hard attitude.

Perry while at Texas A&M, joined the Corps of Cadets and was well liked and elected yell leader. He also sold books door to door to help pay for college. Vietnam was in the back of everyone’s mind at this point in time, as it was for Perry. He accepted a commission in the United States Air Force after graduating, completed pilot training, and flew tactical airlifts in Europe and the Middle East through most of the 1970s. He retired in 1977 as a captain and returned to Texas to work on the family’s cotton farm.

Colleagues of Perry during his tour have fond memories of him.

“People are assessing you from the moment you walk in the front door,” said Forman, an Abilene resident who served as an aircraft commander with the 772nd squadron. “You were dealing with massive personalities. All of us were extremely confident young men, and he thrived in that environment.”

“I remember he was slim, trim and in good athletic condition,” said William Alexander of Colleyville, another pilot who served at Dyess with Perry. “I thought he was a pretty sharp guy and dependable. Some (airmen) you had to worry about, but he was on top of things.”

Those times back then were easy compared to being governor of Texas. Texas National Guard and Reserve has been used to supplement military forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan for the last 10 years. Perry has had to comfort spouses and family that have lost loved ones who were killed in action.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry hugs Betty Martinez, the mother of fallen Army Pfc. John Edward Andrade, Sr. of San Antonio

Texas Gov. Rick Perry hugged Betty Martinez, the mother of fallen Army Pfc. John Edward Andrade, Sr. of San Antonio on Saturday, during a joint session of the Texas Legislature to honor fallen Texas servicemen in the House Chamber in Austin. Family members of fallen veterans crowded the House floor in a special joint session. State Sen. Brian Birdwell, who retired from the Army after being seriously burned in the Sept. 11 attacks on the Pentagon, helped read the names of 96 service members killed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

For the returning soldiers, Perry has made it one of his top priorities to take care of them. Even while campaigning this September, Perry made time to attend the Lone Survivor Foundation’s Second Annual Gala.

“These are our precious sons and daughters; they are our flesh and blood,” Perry said. “We must take care of every last one of them. Organizations like the Lone Survivor Foundation are part of our helping meet that obligation, but the state has a role to play as well.”

For the members of the military, the return home can be every bit as trying as anything that happens on the battlefield, Perry said.

Gov. Rick Perry’s good friend, retired U.S. Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell and his dog, Rigby also attended the Gala.

Speaking of Marcus Luttrell, Gov. Perry has been there for him whenever needed.  After his therapy dog was murdered, Luttrell chased the perps down and held them at bay until police arrived to arrest them. Marcus ended up going to the Perry’s in need of support and comfort after his loss. The Perry’s offered Marcus an invitation to stay at their place as long as he needed to. Marcus has been an adopted family member ever since getting back from his traumatic ordeal in Afghanistan where he was the lone survivor of Seal Team 10.

Rick Perry and Marcus Lattrell

Rick and Marcus spend time together to help raise funds to help others like Marcus coming back from war torn areas. They frequent the Texas Custom Choppers and raise funds by auctioning off a Harley Davidson Medal of Honor motorcycle signed by 17 Medal of Honor recipients.

Rick Perry has also taken the time to talk to those just going into the military.

As Perry mingled in the crowd following the townhall, he was approach by Joseph Buhr, an eighteen year old from Altoona, Iowa, who is set to enter basic training for the Marines in December. When he learned the young man would enter the Marines in one month, Perry put his arm around Buhr’s shoulder, drew him in, and whispered in his ear with a few words of advice.

“He told me that if I don’t come across certain challenges along the road of life, I should probably step up my game a bit,” Buhr recounted to ABC News after the exchange. “In the Marine Corps, that actually means quite a bit. You do have to compete quite a bit to succeed in that career.”

“It means a lot coming from a guy who has been very successful in life and who has also been in the military,” Buhr said. “All the advice I can get about life in the military, it means a lot. I don’t take it for granted.”

Such has been Rick Perry’s philosophy in life. He has also shown great compassion and friendship to those he’s come across who were suffering. He met up with Heather Burcham who was suffering from cervical cancer after contracting HPV. Perry developed a close friendship with Heather, spending personal time taking her out to do things she never had done before. Towards the last days of her life, Perry spent one on one time with her, alone, without any fan fair, talking about things that were going on. Rick Perry also spoke at her memorial service. It is extremely moving.

I’m sure there is much more Perry has done that we don’t know about. I had a hard time finding much of what is posted here. I believe that you gain greater insight into a person’s character when you look at what they did when no one was looking. Just the small amount of what I have found out about Perry shows me a person of great character and integrity. It reminds me of a quote from Mark Twain.

“Let us endeavour to live that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.”

Onemovoter, you just made my day. What a beautiful tribute to a godly, caring patriot. Even if Perry doesn’t get the nomination he’ll remain one of my heroes. Thank you for all your research and the wonderful photos.

    • changeforrickperry

      She’d love it!

Unfortunately there is no way to screen for paid stooges, but I hope the visitors to RedState will not fall for this attempt at mind control. It is impossible to notice the avalanche of Perry posts on this site, so much so that RedState is no longer my default GOP blog.

RedState used to be a great forum for anyone that had a conservative opinion and was willing to debate, but it is now turning into a campaign vehicle for the Perry camp. If I wanted to read how great he is and walks on water, I would have visited Perry’s Facebook page.

      • nathanalbright

…you might want to cut out the accusations. After all, paid staffers for Mittens and Cain post stuff here too (mind you, they get trolled as well). If you don’t like Texas chili don’t come to the cookout.

      • bzip

booboola7896 – either backup your claim or look like a fool. You offer npo evidence, no proof that any of Perry’s supporters are paid. You appear to be nothing more than a troll. I call you are your false allegations out!

I have researched all of the candidates as they added their names to the GOP nomination. There are several candidates that I found to be good decent people and that I mostly agree with.

However, the Presidency requires a person with not only being correct on the issues, but having the strength and integrity to stand by what they believe in. I learned in the US Air Force, lessons on leadership and the different styles. You have to pair the right leadership style with the requirements of the position.

Governor Rick Perry has been successful because his style of leadership extends from his compassion and humility he shares with us all regardless of who you are. I know he’s not perfect and Perry is the first to admit the same. We are all human and that’s the human condition.

I decided to post my research here to share with everyone. These relatively unknown stories to the rest of the country out side of Texas, are unknown because Perry doesn’t brag about them. These kinds of stories that describe Perry, is what cemented my decision to support Rick Perry.

I don’t need and haven’t received anything for posting this diary. In fact I’ll be donating to the Perry campaign soon. I just ask people to take the time, like I have, to research the candidates before deciding on one of the candidates. You will be much more confident of your decision if you do.

      • theredrider

You had an interesting point. But you could not back it up with any evidence.

        So you have been banned.

If everyone who accused one or more Romney supporters of being on Romney’s payroll were banned, then there would be no double-standard here.

        Oh well.

I guess some have to get banned so that everyone else will learn and understand the written AND unwritten rules that govern what is considered acceptable here.

  • windwaker24

    I love this guy!

  • westcoastpatriette

Thank you for a moving piece to add to our repertoire of reasons Perry is the best person to vote for in the Republican nomination.

He’s the real deal and I am certain he would make us proud to be Americans (and conservatives) again.

    • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

a President, like George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan that we could be proud of.

      • Benta_Nordstrom

I totally agree with the above comments. Rick Perry is also our best chance at beating Obama! I just hope enough republicans realize that fact by the time the actual voting starts!

  • romansdaughter

that is what I really like about Rick Perry…he has character and that to me is most important. ” Man, looks at outward appearance but God Looks at the heart.” Great post!

  • texasroots

and the photos. I cried. The love of God is in Rick Perry’s heart.

  • Tennessean

    Thanks for sharing your insight.

  • nathanalbright

That is an awesome and very moving personal piece. It also provides his actions against HPV in some sort of context.

    • changeforrickperry

There is a link in the article to the eulogy Governor Perry gave at Heather’s funeral. Although I don’t agree with the Gardasil decision (one of my very few quibbles with his record) it’s plain from the eulogy that he had good intentions. It’s very beautiful and Christ-honoring, and gives you a good picture of Heather, as well.

      • nathanalbright

…and it’s nice to see his more personal touch.

  • avagreen

None can touch him. And, I don’t care whether or not my comment was “fluff” or not.
He can’t be touched by any candidate.

  • carolina

is in God’s plan. Our country needs him.

  • greyeagle

Perry is by far the best candidate to lead the country, but the majority of Republicans seem to believe the stuff spouted by the liberal media AGAIN! Perry is still being attacked, because he is truly who Obama fears. I watched Perry on “Bret Brier” on Fox news tonight. They interviewed Perry and he was extremely articulate in his answers. It was interesting to watch their faces. They thought to do gotcha questions, and seemed sour, when he could answer them. Mostly, they are in the tank for Romney or Cain. It is irritating that conservatives can NOT see what is under their noses, and will settle for someone who does not have his experience, and who may not be able to beat Obama. Perry has been fighting Obama for the past 3 years. He can’t wait for another match.

    • avagreen

Bill Kristol was smirking or genuinely smiling with Perry……..looked sortuv smirky to me. He and Krauthammer both looked rather smugly at each other as Perry was answering questions. He didn’t seem to notice at all. If it didn’t bother him, I guess it wasn’t that bad.

Actually, made both of them look bad, not Perry.

Take a clue, guys: low-class behavior makes you look……..low-class regardless of who/what you are.

    • gracie

Kristol is sitting there with this indulgent smile and Krauthammer with the confused look…would love to know what in the world he was thinking. Wonder if he will write about it.

And I know you did not mention Hannity, but in the fantastic 03 video of Perry at the Freedom concert in Paula’s diary (pretty sure that was ’10 when he was runing for re-elect) but did anybody think…

how CAN Hannity introduce that guy, hear that great speech, the response of the crowd and not “get it?” How could he really be a conservative and not love Perry??

onemo, thanks so much for this wonderful, touching diary!

      • avagreen

……that’s what I’ve come away with. “highest bidder” is his boss, Ailes, and Hannity can talk out of both sides of his mouth at the same time with absolutely no trouble, it seems.

He’s like a hawker at a carnival, trying to get people inside his tent (whatever tent he’s pushing for his boss). I’ve lost a TON (overused word, I know) for the FOX crew. Didn’t realize how willing they were to sell themselves for money.

        There’s a word for that.

Of course, they don’t recognize quality……takes one to know one.

        • avagreen

I’ve gotta start writing my responses on OpenOffice or something before I post. :/

        • gracie

and saw Hannity up close and personal. Plus having watched him for ten years. He did “seem” to be a conservative in the old days. No he was not perfect…talked too much about himself for one thing.

But at the ’09 concert it was ALL about the soldiers, the hook up with Iraq and not a word about himself and his shows. i.e. I was believing the guy! and the whole crowd singing Lee Greenwood, it was a true patriotic experience!

So now I see what he and the rest of Fox lead by Ailes are doing and it makes me doubly sick. Rick Perry was great in ’09 too, but that ’10 concert speech…that should have been the guy who would take Hannity’s heart!

So you are right; he has sold out. What about Levin? and Rush? they have no allegience to Fox.

I am mad but also mourning the loss of any honest commentors. If you find one please let me know. Not kidding

    • sunshinek67

of that Fox News interview. Highlighted? NFZ over Syria and non-specified Venezuela $$, or rather, Perry’s answer that didn’t specify how MUCH went to Venezuela but a country that obviously needs to be reconsidered for ANY Federal aid. MSM is scared of a candidate like Perry.

Juan Williams lame attempt at cutting Perry’s now famous 2/3 line was a very poor excuse for television viewing, thought he was abysmal. Yes, I caught Kristol’s pseudo-intellectual smirk and Krauthammer’s perpetual constipated facial expression. But Perry is a conservative Governor from Texas, and that is not what the establishment wants. And the Democrats do not want a likable personable 3-term Governor from the 2nd largest state in the Union that has a successful record running against their lame incumbent.

  • wacowboy

good job! like to get to see the Man instead of the candidate.

  • redmymind

so when do I get to buy a signed copy of the excellent biography on Governor Perry you’re gonna write???

    Great, great job! Thank you!!!

  • iidvbii

As so many others have commented here it was great to get a small glimpse at the real person. Perry has been my governor for a decade now. The first time I voted for him specifically was his run for Lt. Governor. He came to Dallas and I got to hear him speak. I liked him, his background and his no BS approach. I have been casting ballots for Rick Perry ever since and will again given the opportunity. I could list policy achievements or list his conservative bio for you. But the truth is that I have supported him not for what he said he would do but for who he is. With his character you have a pretty good idea of what to expect and he hasn’t disappointed. Of course there have been issues where the good governor has found himself on the wrong side of Texan’s. Guardisil comes to mind. But in those rare cases Perry has always relented to the will of his people. I think that in itself describes so much of what I support in the man.

Although Rick Perry has led an admirable personal life, it is important to keep the polls in mind when we consider his viability as a candidate.

I’m ok with people voting for someone that they feel strongly about, be it Perry, Cain, Romney, Gingrich, Huntsman, Bachmann, Paul or whomever.

But we shouldn’t just attack one candidate in order to make him a human sacrifice for the Tea Party cause.

Not unless we’re talking about a real RINO, such as Giuliani in 2008.

Even if VanderPlaat doesn’t give the nod to Perry, which would be nice, it is quite telling when the Family Leader won’t even consider your nutty fringe candidate for an endorsement. At least Perry is being considered, that alone is worthy of merit.

  • sunshinek67

That doesn’t mean that Paul is the better GOP candidate, because he’s not (by light years), it just means that there exists in our society more irrational radicals breathing the same air as sane folks. Ignorance propagates faster than bunnies~

  • runner12

I am already in the Perry camp and the information in your diary further solidifies my support.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why we don’t consolidate behind Perry as Conservatives. He has the most conservative, limited government plans out there. His strong 10th amendment views would return power to the states the way the Founders intended.

I heard he did well in the debate tonight.I hope that people will start to giving him a second look and realize that he is our best shot at defeating Obama.

I also understand that Rick and Anita have also taken in some other injured Navy Seals as well. I hope this story goes viral. Thank you for posting this.

  • changeforrickperry

A little back story: last month my little brother, sisters, and I decided we would send Governor Perry some encouraging letters and Scripture verses. We worked hard on the package and then sent it off, hoping that it would brighten his day.

Well, this morning I got the mail, and noticed a large envelope in with our other (junk) mail. I flipped it over, and saw right there in the left-hand corner: “Office of the Governor, Austin, TX.”

I nearly had a heart attack. We opened the envelope and there was a personal thank-you note from the Governor himself! “Just think,” Mom told us, “you could have gotten a thank-you from the future President of the United States!”

Now I tell you all this not to brag on my family or myself, but to say that Perry did NOT have to send us a thank-you note; however, he took the time out of his day to express his thanks and to wish us a Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas. It brightened my day significantly, as one of my baby goats died this morning and I was feeling pretty blue. This letter only confirmed for me what onemovoter’s article has been telling us all week: that Rick Perry, the person, is a very compassionate man of great character, who would even take time out of his day to write a letter to some Louisiana kids. Not many men would do that–certainly not many men who are running for President.

    • circlegranch

at a time of year where we all must pause and say prayers of thanksgiving for our blessings and the good that still survives. Sorry about your goat; I lost my beloved cat recently and am still heartbroken. God bless and Happy Thanksgiving, changeforrickperry.

  • annie54

I have never seen a race so bent on destroying a candidate’s run. The media aren’t even mentioning Perry’s name. They’re trying to bring up Bachmann so she can get Cain’s votes instead of Perry.

I streamed in Rick’s “Response” day of prayer and fasting in August, for the entire day and fasted and prayed. I feel in my heart that Rick is the hands-on leader we need for the next administration because he has heart and understanding, as we all know.

There is a movement against him that only a MIRACLE OF GOD can overpower. We must pray without ceasing. What our nation is going to experience through suffering during the next several years calls for a bold, gutsy leader who will feel the pain and humanly and naturally react to it for We, the People.

Right now, we have to pray that the Lord’s Will be done and that Governor Perry and Anita are protected and given strength and financial backing to carry on. I’ve seen miracles and they still happen.

  • onemovoter

And will be posting another article soon. There are quite a few facets to Gov. Rick Perry of which portray an incredible leader who knows the right thing to do in an emergency.

Keep posted for the diary next week. In the mean time I would suggest to keep emailing the link of this diary to everyone you know to get the word out.

I also appreciate all of the compliments that have been given in response to this diary. I am humbled, however, I only posted what I could find publicly on Gov. Rick Perry. That is the person who we should praise and follow as a personal example.

    • http://theheartlander.wordpress.com/ heartlander

…that he received the endorsement of Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal early on. I have mountains of respect for Bobby Jindal. He and Perry have a lot in common. Both are unafraid to fight for their states and their people against the tyrant currently in the White House.

      • changeforrickperry

Perry gets endorsements from the real conservatives in the field who don’t mind getting their hands dirty! I love it! What a sharp contrast between Perry and old Willard.

I love my Governor Jindal–he’s great. (Got to vote for him for the first time last month–very exciting.) I couldn’t stop laughing when T-Paw endorsed Willard and then Jindal endorsed Rick that same afternoon! Hah! I’ll bet Romney felt just a tad deflated after that.

  • http://theheartlander.wordpress.com/ heartlander

…how you act when nobody is watching.

I remember after George W. Bush left office, reading somewhere about how, through practically his whole presidency, he’d gone quietly (so as not to require a big security motorcade) once or twice a month to Walter Reed to visit our wounded veterans.

How it must have stung when leftists accused him of not caring about veterans! But he never breathed a word about those visits to Walter Reed.

    • greyeagle

He is still visiting hospitals in TX. He and his wife also greets soldiers coming in to DFW airport. He also did a bike ride not too long ago with disabled veterans. So he has not stopped. Perry does a lot of the same thing and he does NOT make it a photo op either. I respect both men for the way they respect our military and veterans.

      • Benta_Nordstrom

President Bush is a man of character. He was also a President that made decisions based on principle and conviction! We shall always be grateful to him for leading the country how he did!

This interview gives us another glimpse into the Perry family’s life from Miss Anita’s point of view. What a beautiful lady, both on the outside and the inside. She’d be a wonderful FLOTUS…I’m sure she’d return the White House to all it’s former Christmas grandeur–and throw that Mao Zedong ornament out the window like a baseball. Oh, for the days when I loved my First Lady…

    • nathanalbright

Mrs. Laura Bush was an excellent first lady herself.

      • changeforrickperry

(public school term) when Laura became FLOTUS, and I fear I took her for granted. When Miss Anita takes the reins from Michelle Antoinette I’ll resolve
never to take her for granted. To borrow a line from Marianne Dashwood, “Yhe more I know of the world the more I am convinced” that true ladies are few and far between, and I will be thankful for Anita Perry everyday she resides in the White House.

        • nathanalbright

….I’m only 30 and I was in college when Laura Bush became First Lady, and I did appreciate her graciousness after remembering 8 years with Hillary Clinton.

          • changeforrickperry

and ready to do my little bit! After all, in a way I’m voting for First Lady as well; I can’t think about Rick without thinking about Anita at the same time. They just seem like “one person,” if you know what I mean. They compliment each other perfectly.

          • nathanalbright
