WA-08 Dave Reichert

After reading AceinTx’s update on the RMSP, I did a (very little) bit of checking into Dave Reichert’s record.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Reichert was a popular King County Sheriff, under whose tenure the Green River Killer was arrested, tried and convicted. Capitalizing on that popularity, in 2004 he ran for Jennifer Dunn’s open seat in the US House and defeated local talk show host, Dave Ross, 51-46.

Reichert defeated Darcy Burner in 2006 by a margin of 51 to 48 and again in 2008 by a margin of 51-49.

The American Conservative Union gives him a 56 lifetime rating. Of Washington’s nine congressmen and 2 senators, that ranks him as the third most conservative. Of these 11, 3 have lifetime ratings of less than 10; 2 have ratings of 10; 3 have ratings between 10 and 20; and two have ratings of over 90 (both from Eastern Washington).

My point is that while Dave Reichert may appear to be quite moderate, by Washington standards, he is quite conservative. He is almost certainly as conservative as anyone could be and still have a chance at winning in his district. I would say his association with RMSP is in keeping with his record.

…had invested in; and it was one of the few bright spots of Election Night that they didn’t.

Thank God Darcy Burner is an arrogant condescending snot.

Or I think it could easily have gone the other way. The controversy over her claim to having an Economics degree and her inability to say something sensible, such as, “I’m sorry, I misspoke,” was a blessing for Dave Reichert.

Dave Reichert is a good man. Even though

he is a moderate, he is the best the GOP could do in that area.

I think it is important that we stand for principles and that we recruit people that uphold them. I also think that we need to be realistic about demographics when we recruit as well.

I agree with keeping the moderates out of leadership positions and I’m not ever going to advocate for another “moderate” candidate for POTUS. But I am going to be embrace those that further my cause in areas that are hostile to some parts of it.

Please note-I did NOT advocate for McCain during the primaries. He was my 3/4 choice. But once the primaries were over, I didn’t cut my nose off to spite my face.

We should hope that Burner returns in 2010

Darcy Burner failed to unseat Reichert in both 2006 and 2008 – two consecutive years with huge Democratic gains in Congress. 2010 will at least be a slightly better Republican year, so there’s little chance Burner is taking this district. Reichert even beat her in left-leaning King County, where I reside.

I'm kind of hoping she runs again.

I think there’s a good chance. She has a tin ear, so to speak.
