WA-05 Cathy McMorris Rodgers

Today Rodgers won election as the Vice Chairwoman of the House Republican Caucus.

Here’s a link to the Seattle Times article (you can skip the first part about Patty Murray if you don’t have a strong stomach).

And here’s a Wikipedia article about her.

I know this isn’t actually much information to go on. Unfortunately, since she’s from the other side of the state, I don’t know much about her. I only post this because she is young, only 39 years and appears to be someone who could possibly rise farther and I wanted to bring her to everyone’s attention.

    in somewhat random fashion:

Cathy was a 5-term Washington State Representative from the 7th legislative district (Ferry, Lincoln, part of Okanogan, Pend Oreille, part of Spokane, and Stevens counties), which covers roughly half of the 5th Congressional District. Cathy was first elected to Congress when former Rep. George Nethercutt decided to take on Patty Murray for Senate in 2004. Nethercutt had unseated Speaker of the House Tom Foley in 1994.

I met Cathy and her husband Brian in 2006 at the annual Right to Life auction in Spokane. Their son, Cole, was born with Down Syndrome.

Cathy voted against the $700 billion bailout bill and defeated a Spokane area Psychologist/Attorney 65% to 35% to win re-election in November.

    Spokane Mayor trivia:
Cathy’s father-in-law, David Rodgers, is the last Spokane mayor elected to a second term.

    7th Legislative District trivia:
Washington now has a top two primary system and Cathy’s former district had two Republicans facing off in the general election for one seat and no challenger to the Republican incumbent for the other.

I hate the top two primary because I was figuring that in Western Washington, we could easily see two Democrats in the general election. In typical Western Washington fashion, it never occurred to me that there would ever be two Republicans!

That settles it for me. When we retire, we’re moving to the other side!

will always welcome more conservatives, especially in Spokane County. We just barely went for McCain and Rossi and that only after the true absentees came in (we are completely vote by mail). If we could just get rid of the 3rd Legislative District we would be pretty solid red. The 3rd is the poorest district in the entire state but they keep electing Democrats and expecting it to change!

PS – - I was born in Seattle but I have been in Spokane for over 30 years. I tell people that the webs between my toes have atrophied and that I can now tan instead of rusting!

Having achieved that shade of perfect whiteness that actually repels UV radiation.

Not sure if I would trade in one metropolitan area for another. I’m thinking more Tonasket or Okanogan.
