Patty Murray; Arrogant and Ignorant

Just because Patty Murray represents Washington in the US Senate, it doesn’t mean she should be insulting the residents of the great State of Alabama. As reported in The Daily Weekly:

With the Dreamliner finally up in the air, one could almost forget the unending controversy swirling in Boeing’s turbines.First there’s that little move to South Carolina planned to actually build the Dreamliner. But also back in the news is the battle over building tankers for the Air Force. Sen. Patty Murray, up for election next year, has been a driving force behind Boeing’s protest of the military’s initial decision to award the contract to Northrop Grumman. All Things Considered did a story last week on Northrop’s attempts to put pressure on the feds that included an interview with Murray where she managed to insult the entire state of Alabama.

Northrop planned to build the tankers at an assembly line in the southern state, which Murray says is a mistake.

Quoth Murray: “I have stood on the line in Everett, Wash., where we have thousands of workers who go to work every day to build these planes. I would challenge anybody to tell me that they’ve stood on a line in Alabama and seen anybody building anything.”

I’m trying to decide which is more egregious; Murray’s abysmal ignorance or the pernicious bigotry that assumes all Alabamians are uneducated yokels.

Perhaps Senator Murray has heard of “Hyundai.” They manufacture “automobiles.” She might be shocked to learn that Hyundai has a “manufacturing plant” in Montgomery, Alabama. She might also find it surprising to learn that Mercedes-Benz has a huge, state of the art manufacturing facility just outside of Tuscaloosa. The last time I heard, manufacturing plants had “lines” where people “build things.” In fact, according to the Manufacture Alabama! website, Alabama has a strong manufacturing base.

The bigotry we experienced first hand when our daughter chose to attend the University of Alabama. It was shocking, really, how contemptuous people were of her choice. Mooncat at Left in Alabama sums it up:

This is a perfect example of negotiating by tearing the other guy down — and I expected better from Patty Murray. Some of you may remember how she originally won her Senate seat by campaigning as a “mom in tennis shoes.” As a supposed champion for average Americans, Murray should have checked her facts before spouting what any educated person would realize was nonsense — and insulting, stereotypical nonsense, at that. We’re not still chopping cotton down here, Senator, barefoot and illiterate. Alabamians have long since embraced modern technology. In fact, my neighbor is a farmer and uses GPS in his rig that keeps his combine on the exact same path his planter traveled months before, right down to a little wobble he might have made reaching to answer his cell phone.

Alabama workers built Saturn V rockets in the 60′s and were instrumental in their design and testing and played major roles in the Space Shuttle, Spacelab, the Delta IV rocket (Delta and Atlas launch vehicles are now manufactured in a state of the art facility in Decatur, Alabama) and now Ares programs. Speaking as a former industry insider, I would put Alabama engineers and scientists — and yes, technicians and machinists — up against anything Washington state has.

For a United States Senator, there’s really no excuse for this kind of ignorance and bigotry is always indefensible. I really can’t add anything to that other than to extend my apology to the people of Alabama and promise them that I’ll do whatever is within my power to see that she’s given the pink slip next November.

Taken just last week near Tuscaloosa, this photo depicts typical Alabamians who probably don't even know what an airplane is, much less how to build one

of voting her out of office? Typical arrogant, condescending liberal.

Her numbers are below 50% – that’s a first – and there are several challengers, two of whom “might” be able to win. I’m sad to say that I don’t think this incident will really hurt her that much in Washington because the anti-south bias is relatively common here.

If she tries take a swipe at Alabama, I’m sure we here in Texas are not that far behind. I’m sure Senator Murray hasn’t known anything about Toyota’s engine plant in Huntsville,AL(I don’t want to confuse it with Huntsville,TX). Morons like this don’t need to be in the US Senate.

is actively seeking her ouster…but there are no conservative candidates at this time. I have seen a few RINO’s with websites, but nothing in the way of campaigning. To be honest, King county, where this arrogant politician is from is voter central. King county is “progressive” (Remember when that word really meant “socialist”?) and determines who gets elected. I live in conservative eastern Washington – we are ignored, and suffer the tyranny of the vast unwashed ignorant voters of the greater Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area.

To the people of Alabama – I apologize for this moron. Her stupidity in backing labor over corporations benefits South Carolina, but she isn’t bright enough to understand the role she played in that move being determined.

Which of the candidates (and prospective candidates) would you classify as RINOs?

      • lunarmanathome

adding substantially more and removing most of his “Green” stances that he previously held, ie that whole “green” jobs thing that he was supporting via wind and solar. (I had written to him in the past taking him to task for this. In a stse where 70% of our energy comes from hydroelectric and nuclear it just didn’t make a lot of sense.)

Additionally, controlling and reducing carbon is definitely a very leftist issue, particularly the manner in which the Amateur-In-Chief wants to do it. Salazar’s initial, albeit not fully fleshed out talking points on this were not far removed from our Dear Leaders – hence RINO.

Reading the new version on his website, he appears to have shifted very comfortably back into conservative territory. I’m just not sure he is a viable candidate. As I said above, King County will determine who we get – and Eastern Washington just doesn’t seem to matter all that much in the scheme of things. Murray, and Cantwell for that matter, wrote us off.

That there’s uncertainty he’s viable. Like I mentioned below, his ability to generate campaign contributions couldn’t even charitably be called lukewarm. I think we have two potentially viable candidates…but neither one has officially declared yet.

          • lunarmanathome

to use the word “viable” in my first post and regret that. I don’t see Salazar as a viable candidate at this time. If there are others who may be so, they need to get mobilized – they’re already late and Murray is vulnerable.

Look for an announcement from Chris Widener just after the first of the year and from Clint Didier on the 11th. Didier is planning a post-announcement celebration, so I’m assuming the decision to run has already been made.

I think these are the two who have a chance to win.

is saying all the right things. Don’t know yet if his record matches his rhetoric. It’s a bit troubling that he worked on Ahnuld’s campaign in CA – - I don’t think I would regard that as a point of pride for my bio. It will likely come down to turn out in Eastern Washington. Dino Rossi would be our governor if we had turned out at the same rate as the wet side.

Salazar’s web site is here: http://sean4senate.com/

      • http://itsonlywords55.wordpress.com itsonlywords

Has been “running” for a year and his campaign has raised somewhere around $30K, some of which came from his own pocket. I think he’s solid on the issues and he has some great ideas, but if he can’t generate any enthusiasm (i.e. campaign contributions) he’s not a viable candiate.
