Ken Khachigan puts matters into perspective. He might have added that not since 1960 has a Vice Presidential selection swung a state that otherwise would not have been swung and that there have been plenty of occasions in which Vice Presidential selections have lost their own states. The most important qualification for the Vice Presidency, of course, is the ability to step in on a moment’s notice should anything happen to the President and that should be the driving issue behind any selection. Sure, chemistry between the Presidential and Vice Presidential nominees matters as well and so do complementing skill sets. But the line of succession is the biggest deal of all and politics really takes a back seat.
