Hey, I Feel Better Now! (Part Deux)

From Dan Drezner:

9:47 PM:  Biden gives an answer on Pakistan that’s pretty good, until he ends with (paraphrasing), “there are 1,000 madrasahs on the border in Pakistan!  We should be building schools instead.”  Hey, Joe?  That’s what a madrasah is.

I think he just pulled a Palin!

PY, DON'T YOU EVER REPEAT "PULLED A PALIN"

Mike gamecock DeVine Friday, October 3rd at 4:52PM EDT (link)

That was wrong. He pulled a Biden.

I don’t know where you live, but for you to make that statement (which I NEVER heard until you said it) makes me think you live inside the beltway.

That was an insult for me to think that.

Wake up and look in the mirror!

Pulling a Palin would only fairly mean

TELLING THE TRUTH

Gc is disappointed in you PY.

I would never make the mistake of aiding the Left on the frontpage of RS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hear me Erick

PY cmon I mean really “pull a Palin” WTF!! Really Biden is the obvious idiot on this debate and Gov.Palin showed him how it should be done.I have read your stuff for as long as I can remember (which sometimes is less than 10 minutes) and almost always agreed at least partially with you but this is just over the top.

Actually, Dan Dresner said it.

And he describes himself as a libertarian-Republican who voted for Kerry in 2004.

Apparently a sometimes-contributor to Slate, he was one of a multitude on the staff there who voted opposite the four who voted for Bush (one was an intern, FGS). A screaming indictment of SCUM bias, but who’s keeping track?

I didn't write that.

Drezner did. That’s why it is part of the blockquote.

Give Pejman a break.

He has to read all this stuff every day to come up with the great quotes. This one just slipped by.

We all know that Biden simply “pulled a Biden.”

Suppose he used the word Jihad?

ivorykeyer Friday, October 3rd at 8:04PM EDT (link)

To the public at large, jihad has a distinctively negative connotation, for obvious reasons. The word jihad though, from an objective definition, means a Muslim religious duty, to strive or struggle. It has been co opted by radical Islam to denote their struggle against the West, Democratic rule and any number of any other institutions they despise.

Sure, Madrasah means school. Ask Joe sixpack what they think a Madrasah is though and nine times out of ten they’re going to say something along the lines of it being some sort of radical Islamic religious school where youngsters are taught to be terrorists. Madrasah has an entirely different connotation than the word “school”, which most Americans take to mean simply as a place of education and learning.

Although technically incorrect, Biden’s point was based upon the general public connotation of the word Madrasah vs. the word school. There - was that so difficult? Partisan gotcha debate word analysis is really tiresome and probably doesn’t convince anyone to change their mind.

One final thought. People involved in a Jihad are known as mujahideen, like those the U.S. supported in Afghanistan in their efforts to get the USSR out. At this point in time, I think that the word mujahideen and the thought of the U.S. supporting them probably wouldn’t sit well with most Americans.

I was about to write a very similar comment, but you have made that unnecessary.
