Obamaganda

I didn’t catch this evening’s Obamamercial, though being a political junkie, I am sure that I will find a way to watch a replay. But the Economist saw the broadcast and came away with some choice catches in its liveblogging of the event:

8:06: “Cut taxes for those making less than $200,000″. Didn’t that used to be $250,000?

[. . .]

8:25: I like the words that keep appearing next to Mr Obama. It’s very Stephen Colbert.

8:24: Mr Obama talks about how Mark Dowd in Louisville can’t make ends meet…as Mr Dowd piles his plate full of pork.

8:21: Wow, they are really exaggerating his legislative accomplishments. Did Mr Obama really change the way Washington works in his four years in the Senate?

For this, they delayed baseball? Oh, and be sure to read that 8:06 observation a few times. Evidently, the income levels to get tax cuts keeps shifting.

“Cut taxes for those making less than $200,000″. Didn’t that used to be $250,000?”

No, that’s a misreading. He has said two things, and that question conflates them. First up, he will cut taxes for those earning under $200k. Second, he will raise taxes on those making more than $250k.

The two are not mutually exclusive, and that’s been the tax plan throughout. You can disagree with it. You can think it’s insane. Just try to keep it straight, as it hasn’t changed.

Yes, that's my understanding of it too

If you make under $200k the promise was to lower your taxes.
If you make under $250k the promise was to not raise your taxes.
If you make over $250k the promise was to raise your taxes.

I’m all for nit-picking, but if we’re going to then we need to at least get the details right.

nope, $150,000 now...

You are absolutely right. It has always been:

  • Tax breaks for those making 200k or less.
  • No tax raises for those making under 250k.
  • Tax increases to pre-Bush levels for those making over 250k.

$150,000. per family

Scope Thursday, October 30th at 4:59AM EDT (link)

I heard now Biden has said $150,000. PER FAMILY- not per person. Oh well, it’s our PATRIOTIC DUTY to pay more taxes, just get with the program.

Wasn’t planning on watching the Hollywood type commercial, but suffered through it. I thought it looked to me like he was trying to counter the Joe the Plumer disaster rather than to make his closing argument as advertised. It was a very expensive way of saying the same nothing he has said all along on the stump. Watching Nancy Grace in her black leather and studs, whipping her guests would have been more entertaining.

I decided he is not an empty suit, he is a suit full of horse dung, and he just keeps kicking it down the road.

That's what doesn't make sense...

Fernman Thursday, October 30th at 5:06AM EDT (link)

First Obama says taxes for those paying more than $250,000. Then those making more than $200,000 and now Biden says we are going to tax those making more then $150,000.

Is Biden talking about married couples or single persons, because if it is married couples making the 150,000 then Obama will be taxing singles at $75,000.

The problem with Obama is once he proposes a tax hike there is not stopping how many millions of people he will tax.Once he gets the taste of tax increases that becomes the solution for EVERYTHING that ails the government. Much like if all you have is a hammer, you treat everything else as a nail.

Just like a hunter going after his quarry, he doesn’t want to spook us. As soon as I heard those numbers I knew that they were not firm and would be revised down. Should Obama get elected, by the time the inauguration comes around that figure will be down to $50K per FAMILY as the threshold for tax breaks, and $100K per FAMILY as the threshold for increased tax rates. Remember, his long time motivation is redistributing everyone’s wealth, not letting us create and accumulate our own to do with as we see fit.

Save the Earth, it’s the only known planet with beer.

I like how the very first comment posted to this article debunked this exact “OH NOES 2 DIFFERENT NUMBERS” fallacy, but you just repeat it anyway.

Questions...

Fallon Thursday, October 30th at 7:26AM EDT (link)

Is this true?

“If you are a married couple, then it’s $250,000 and if single $200,000. So if you are “living in sin” you get a $400,000 break as opposed to married $250,000. (Will there really be a $150,000 marriage penalty at these salaries?)

“Is marriage going to be a thing of the past? Is this how he solves the ‘gay marriage’ problem?”

Oh my, the Obamatron stooges are here

hunter Thursday, October 30th at 7:31AM EDT (link)

They are here to make sure that no one gets to question The One.
You guys can engage in denial and word parsing all you want. When Obama goes back to the old democrat standard of raising taxes on everyone making over $75,000, will you finally stfu?
Clinton promised a middle class tax cut in 1992 with total sincerity. And then he sincerely raised taxes on nearly everyone, in the largest tax increase in history, until America woke up and took Congress away from him in 1994.

I’m not an Obama stooge. I’m simply answering the question posed on the original post. “Didn’t that used to be $250,000?” Answer: No.

It may be word parsing to you, but the least we can do here is be accurate about what positions the other side has had before we claim they are flip flopping or making adjustments under the table.

you are Siberian it USED to be 300K....

JadedByPolitics Thursday, October 30th at 7:57AM EDT (link)

Got to compare Obama’s tax deal to the one Lando made with Darth Vader. (Just watched this flick this weekend with the five-year-old. Got to teach the children well…)

Darth Vader: “Calrissian. Take the princess and the Wookiee to my ship.”

Lando: “You said they’d be left at the city under my supervision.”

Darth Vader: “I am altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.”

Obama is going to raise taxes on a lot of people

JSobieski Thursday, October 30th at 3:01PM EDT (link)

First, the cap on payroll taxes will be raised above $92k, so all of those people will pay more in taxes. I realize that those are payroll taxes, but nonetheless, taxes will go up.

Second, capital gains taxes will be raised at least 5% but probably more like 10% or even 15% with a democrat Congress.

Income taxes will go up for anyone making over the national income average.

Obama’s tax promises are as believable as his promise to accept public financing for his campaign.

This would be a lot funnier if the Economist hadn't also endorsed OBAMA
