Listening To The Generals And Military Experts

Remember that George W. Bush got excoriated for this kind of thing:

On Wednesday, the president met with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen and Central Command commander four-star Gen. David Petraeus. Gates, supported by Mullen and Petraeus, vigorously argued that the president should back away from his campaign pledge to withdraw all U.S. combat forces from Iraq within the next 16 months and space out the withdrawal over a longer period of time. However, the president instructed the three officials to prepare a plan that would still implement the 16-month withdrawal period, Pentagon sources said.

The discussion between the president and the three officials was friendly and respectful. However, the president’s determination to implement his stated policy took the officials by surprise, one of the sources told UPI. Petraeus, in particular, had expected the recommendation to extend the period of the withdrawal timetable to be accepted, several sources said.

Evidently, no amount of expertise arguing contrary to campaign promises that were meant to win votes among the hard-core Democratic base will suffice in overturning those promises, no matter what the dangers to American national security might be. The President shows no sign whatsoever of being prepared to observe conditions on the ground and implement a withdrawal plan that is based on those on-the-ground conditions, rather than the artificial timetable that he propagated throughout the Presidential campaign. In doing so, he places the success of the Iraq reconstruction program at risk.

I would respect this stance a whole lot more if the Administration would tell us what conditions and circumstances might cause it to alter its 16-month withdrawal plan. However, mum’s the word on that issue. Apparently, President Obama does not think that anything could possibly occur that would justify amending the withdrawal plan.

And they said that George W. Bush was stubborn. To the extent that any of the caricatures of the Bush Administration resemble reality, the Obama Administration will ensure that the phrase “meet the new boss, same as the old boss” gets a lot of play from a lot of people in the coming months and years.

This is enormously distressing

Like most in the service (I recently retired), I spent about half of the last 5 years in Iraq trying to make it work. I lost friends over there. In the dark days of ‘05 and ‘06, I despaired of success. I was there in ‘07 when Petraeus came and and turned the tide of battle with his leadership.

I can handle government forays into health care and education, however ill advised. I can handle income redistribution through punitive taxation. I can even handle social and economic reengineering based on the fantasy of climate change. All those things can be reversed later, when the political balance of power changes … as it must.

But I cannot handle the notion of giving up a hard-won victory in Iraq. The losses of our troops can not be reversed. Fathers cannot be returned to their children, sons and daughters cannot be resurrected. They paid the price to win. For Obama to give up that victory as payback to vocal primary supporters is a disgrace I cannot abide.

But how do we fight it?

In my mind I fantasize that Petraeus will resign in protest. That gesture, while ultimately futile, would at least capture the essential nature of this Presidential betrayal for history. But this is only a fantasy. As much as we respect his ability,we must also recognize his ambition. A man does not rise to 4 stars in the modern Army by being willing to fall on his sword over principle.

Obama lies, a country dies

So all that talk during the campaign about it might take longer than 16 months and we will look at the situation was of course just a political smokescreen. I wonder how many votes Obama garnered by lying about his true intentions in Iraq?

Let’s see what the people of Iraq think when they see 10,000 solidiers per month leave Iraq. What happens when Iran steps into Iraq as we leave. I don’t think Obama cares. He does not care about the unborn so why should he care about Iraq?

They always said it was going to be a failure...

The left always said going into Iraq was going to be a failure. Now they are making sure they will be right. I hate to think there are people like that in our government, but I think it’s that simple.

Bush was excoriated by, who?....

oh, yes, the American people!, for ignoring their wishes concerning Iraq. Obama can expect no such excoriation from the American people for doing the very thing he said he would do if elected.

Petty, small-minded stuff.

The election was not about Iraq

Ed54 Sunday, January 25th at 12:50PM EST (link)

Poll after poll demonstrated that Iraq was not a major factor in the general election. If it were, McCain probably would have won. The only people who excoriated Bush over Iraq were Democratic primary voters. NOT the entire nation.

Remeber the words...

“I won.” And that is how he will erode what any expert has to say. What do you call a CIC who ignores the MOH recipients Ball, disses Iraq successes, ultimate sacrifices and ignores the General in charge of command? A buddy fukker extraordinaire.

3 more years of the Pied Piper’s pretentious Presidency. Thank God for small favors.
