A Reason For Hope; A View Of Two College Graduations

This is my first attempt at a diary – so here goes:

I’d like to share a personal story.  Last weekend and this weekend, I was out of town, attending two college graduations.  I have twin boys, one graduated from Radford University, Radford, Va. (western part of state), and the other from George Mason University, Fairfax, Va. (northern Virginia).

The Radford graduation had Gov. Tim Kaine as commencement speaker.  When introduced, he only received polite, but muted applause from the crowd.  Obama’s name was not mentioned at all during the entire ceremony.  Interestingly enough, Gov. Kaine’s address focused on part of the Democrats agenda-expanding the ability to go to college for a larger number of young people.  He said America “lagged behind” in the number of college grads compared to the rest of the world and that “we were falling further behind.”  Translation-free ride and expansion of another entitlement program.

The George Mason graduation had Steve Case (founder of AOL) as speaker. Did you know that they both attended the same high school in Hawaii?  Obama was a freshman and Case was a senior.  Anyway, as soon as he started talking about Obama there was an enthusiastic response from the student body, and polite applause from the guests.  Mr. Case gave an outline of Pres. Obama’s life story.  His point for the students was “like the president, they could achieve anything, possibly by a circuitous path.”  It was interesting that he adroitly glossed over what some of us perceive as “holes” in the president’s story.  But, the main observation I came away with was, when the student speaker at the graduation brought up Obama’s name again and said “this was the most inspiring election we ever had,” the crowd response was definitely tepid, although a specific, smaller group of students remained enthusiastic.

An observation on Notre Dame’s graduation, being held today, can be added here.  This is one of the first, rare times that we have seen protests toward Obama on such public display and the MSM has had to cover some of it.

What I am trying to say in an anecdotal way, is that I sense a change in the wind.  Perhaps there is a glimmer of hope; maybe something is happening here.

    There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a tax man with a bill over there
Telling me I got to pay up now
I think it’s time we stop, conservatives, what’s that sound
    Everybody look what’s going down

    There’s battle lines being drawn
The left is dragging us down
Middle age people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from the MSM
I think it’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
    Everybody look what’s going down

What a field-day for the left
A thousand people in the street
    Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It’s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound
    Everybody look what’s going down

    Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life the left will creep
It starts when you’re always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what’s that sound
    Everybody look what’s going down
    Stop, hey, what’s that sound
    Everybody look what’s going down
    Stop, now, what’s that sound
    Everybody look what’s going down
    Stop, conservatives, what’s that sound
    Everybody look what’s going down

Your version is perfect. I didn’t realize when I wrote that line how applicable it was, especially fitted to “what it is ain’t exactly clear.”

or vice versa. Either way I too have noticed a slight rustling in the leaves out there, not necessarily coming from the “east” (metaphorically used here to indicate the right). Democrats who aren’t necessarily as far-left leaning as the Obama-bots are beginning to realize just how his policies are going to affect them long-term.

The answer, my friend, maybe is finally blowing in the wind.

Hey izoneguy, can ya do anything with the lyrics to that song from the same era?

        • penguin2

That’s what our family sensed, and I also agree with you, that some of that restlessness is coming from the moderate Democrats, who are just now coming to realize what Obama means for our country.

Thank you for your comment and reco.

How many elections will the democrats win
Before they call them a sham?
How many senate seats must the republican’s lose
Before the GOP is totally slammed?
How many times must the obamabots fly
          Before they are forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

How many years must the republican’s lose
          Before America is a sham?
How many years can some people exist
Before they’re allowed to be free?
How many times can people vote for democrats
And pretend that they just don’t see?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

How many times must the ACORNS protest
Before they are called a sham?
How many brains must one man have
Before he can think for himself?
How many taxes will it take till they know
That Obama is the biggest sham?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

            LOL!!!!!

I could hear it in my head. OK that’s sounded creepy but you know what I mean. I hope. Thanks for the laugh, izoneguy!

I now have two, great classic songs going around my head too. Ironic how the “lyrics” come from our side now.

Oh, and I love your sig line, it makes me laugh.

I had a parody tune during the Election… it was to DireStraits (group name was appropriate, IMO) and was to their tune “Industrial Disease” … I called it BI-PARTISAN DISEASE…. odd thing was, only a few changes needed to be made to make it relevant… wish I could find where that was here at RS now.

          Take care friends….

The Republicans need to realize that BI-PARTISAN disease is fatal to them. The democrats won’t catch it because they cannot contract
BI-PARTISAN disease. They are immune because their systems are only left thinking.

Jethro Tull – Fallen on Hard Times

Was written against Reagan/Thatcher but way relates to what Democrats have been doing to us since they took control in 2006 Congress (and even behind the scenes in/through GSE’s – see CRA and the deregulation lies)….

          /THREADJACK ;-)

          • izoneguy

Fallen on hard times — but it feels bad to know
That Obama’s got too long to go
Running on bad lines — taxes are all Obama knows
Tear up, tear up the “stimulus” bill
            my friends.

Oh, Mr. President — it’s all such a mess.
Go right ahead and see what happens if you tax us to death
            .
Oh, Mr. President — you’ve not been put to the test.
Come clean, for once, and hit us with the truth.

Looking for sunshine — oh but it’s just taxes my friends
Yet, you say that hope & change is just round the bend.
Giving us a hard time, my friends
Handing us the same line again.

Fallen on hard times — and there’s nowhere to hide
Now they’ve re-distrubuted my paycheck, and left not even my pride

Turning on the tea party signs — and my back’s to the Fed
Soon there will be raised a holy stink.

Somebody wake me. I want this nightmare to end.
Oh, we won’t take this lying down.
You can keep your promises. shove `em where the sun don’t shine
Just ask my where the tea party is – thats where I’ll be found

listening! I wonder if Redstate has a musical archive?

All songs above nicely appropriate for what is happening now. Only thing, people don’t really know what “hard times” are. They will learn shortly.

Thank for the reco. I just thought the experience was something positive to share, and glimmers of ‘hope’ can strengthen us. We certainly seem to be stirring the pot-Tea parties, Notre Dame public protests, who knows what’s next?

  • mailloux

Your commentary is always insightful and now we’ll have diaries to look forward to as well. Recommended!

Anecdotally speaking, I’ve been witnessing a similar sea change. I live in a very liberal area and I’ve been overhearing the grumblings of some herd-type liberals (these are not rabid lefty ideologues, but mostly blue collar folks who aren’t very interested at all in politics, traditionally vote Democrat and wanted to participate in an ‘historic’ election). Some of these folks are now a lot less enthusiastic about Obama and some downright regret voting for him.

    Take Care, mailloux

    • penguin2

but, I decided the experience and observations were important enough to share. The folks here at Redstate are so gifted, yet down to earth and write and discuss things in such a manner that we all can participate.

I fervently hope you are right about the regretful voters, may their numbers grow and make a difference in 2010 and 2012.

Thank you for your support and the recommendation.

Anna Quindlen delivered mine last year. I don’t remember anything she said, save how important it was for everyone to vote because my generation has to save the world because her generation messed it all up and [insert democratic cause] must change. It sounded like an Obama informercial, but the crowd roared with approval.

My brother attends the Citadel and remarked to me how not once in a speech ostensibly dedicated to how one should lead life after college was the word “honor” ever employed.

It could have been worse, I suppose. John Forbes Kerry delivered it two years earlier. I was disappointed when I heard he did not begin “John Forbes Kerry reporting for duty” salute.

    • penguin2

The word “honor” and the Citadel have always been one and the same. It shows how far our culture has fallen. Political correctness has been used to get rid of what it means to be an American. Since the left has been behind the PC movement, that probably has been their goal all along.

There is definitely something happening here.
