Saturday Morning Breakfasts, Evening Meetings: Joining Your Local GOP

ColdWarrior requested that I write up my experiences in becoming a Precinct Committeeman, and as you all know, he is a fairly persistent fellow.

Two meetings, yes, just two meetings is all it took.  Our local GOP has a monthly City Committee meeting, 2nd Monday of the month.  Lasts an hour.  Upon attending my first one, I filled out a form, paid a membership dues of $50.00, good for two years.  That allowed me to be nominated.  The second month, I was confirmed.  Simple as that.  I have attended 4 monthly meetings so far, the most recent was the annual Mass Meeting, where all the precinct committee members are once again confirmed and recognized.  Other party business went on at the Mass Meeting as well, including preparation for the convention to be held in May for election of the our 2nd District Chairman.  Now that is an important election, as the Chairman is the one who is critical to getting VA -02 back into the hands of the GOP.  I am a delegate to the Convention, so is my husband. No charge.

Let me tell you what else has occurred as a result of a simple phone call, a couple of meetings and filling out a form.  Our GOP City Committee has a Saturday morning breakfast meeting every week.  An inexpensive breakfast buffet works for me. Current business is addressed, then we have speakers.  GOP officials from City Council and the School Board are often there.   With pride we have a prayer, say the Pledge of Allegiance, and sing God Bless America.  You have to know how nice it is to have an opportunity to participate in such activities and not have to hide one’s patriotism.   The speakers we have had include local government officials, state Congressional Delegates and Senators, City Council and School Board officials.   We receive information and updates on events happening locally and at our State House.  I’ve learned about budget shortfalls, City Council and School Board funding concerns, light rail, (ongoing mess) and how it all interacts with our State Capitol in Richmond.

In addition to learning so much about my local government, I have met many members of my local and state government, and well as the candidates for a number of offices.  This includes the six who are currently running in the GOP primary for the 2nd Congressional District.  They have spoken at a number of these meetings.  I have spoken to them individually.  When Moe did an interview on one of the VA -02 candidates the other day, I exclaimed, “Hey, that’s us!”

Where has all of this taken me?  The phone call and participating in my local GOP organizations has opened the door to learning and interacting with representatives of my own local government.  FJG made an important point in a recent comment exchange we had.  She said that not only are all politics local, but that they are personal.  Politics at this level is for me, my family, my friends and my neighbors.  FJG also expounded on the purpose of becoming a precinct committeeman – “getting educated, opinionated and involved about political candidates so that you can get Republicans and others in your area, educated, opinionated and involved.”  From this, I take it even one step further.  When people say they don’t vote, because their vote “doesn’t count” I now can easily let them know how much their vote really does count.  Because it really does all begin at this level, as a precinct committee person, or just as an involved citizen going to local meetings.  You connect with the people who can make a difference, and they want to hear from you.

Now I want to tell you about some monthly luncheons.  There are four GOP womens’ groups in my city. A church friend encouraged me to go to hers.  I did and joined.  Once a month, they meet where there is a luncheon, and now I will say I am probably on the younger side to most of the ladies, but they represent an amazing bedrock of American women.   These ladies are the ones who put together care packages and cards for our military, and do so many other good works in the community.  The first meeting I attended, we had a speaker from the Department of Homeland Security, an outstanding individual who told us about the E-Verify program.  The last  luncheon had the six candidates vying for the 2nd District GOP nomination.

It is not difficult to get involved.  The members of your local GOP need you.  The night of the Precinct Committeemen confirmation, I met another Conservative activist, who is going to fill the second slot in my precinct.  We’re going to share the Precinct Captain title.  The members of my local GOP have been friendly and welcoming.  I believe our party is hungry for help, you just have to get out and start somewhere.  I started with getting my conscience squared with ColdWarrior, so I wouldn’t have to avoid him at the next RS Gathering, and as a result I have found it enjoyable and interesting to participate in the other GOP organizations as well.

We come here to RedState looking for information and direction.  We say the challenge is to take back our party and to save our country.  Becoming a Precinct Committeeman is one of the best ways to do it.  The biggest takeaway on this:  is not just how interesting getting involved with my local GOP has been, but how much I’ve been learning about my local and state government.  The importance of that aspect for us as Republican/Conservative activists, cannot be underestimated.

The journey begins……

Thanks for joining the fray and telling us about it first hand.

like this. RedState really helps bring people along. And I am so glad I won’t have to avoid ColdWarrior next RS Gathering. :-)

This is what it’s all about. Plugging in and doing it.

And now comes the work. You go door to door collecting signatures on petitions. You get the voter registration lists and mark next to each name on the list solid C, RINO, Indy, pro-life D, Drone, or whatever. You call them up and ask the R’s to vote conservative. You give them a ride to the polls if they say they will. You thank them for their vote.

Write down where the potholes are. Call up Public Works and tell them.

    It’s nuts and bolts stuff.

But because of that nuts and bolts stuff, the higher ups in the Party and candidates for office will be very interested in your opinion. If they find out you blog at Redstate, they will buy you flowers.

Explain that they need to oppose socialism and act to shrink government in every way they can.

You may find that some of your fellow city committee members are RINOs mostly interested in securing their place in local politics and a seat in the front pew. Explain to them that being conservatives is better for their long term prospects at that. Some people only respond to self-interest. Others respond to it, and can become solid conservatives once they see the light.

And thanks, Penguin2. You’re a great lady, and will excel at this. You provide a great example for us all.

    • penguin2

As some of the candidates have learned I blog here, they have definitely been interested in talking to me. Because of the nature of this 2nd District race (six candidates for our primary) and that I was so new to all of this, I will not be “endorsing” any this time around. Maybe in future races I’ll act differently, but right now I felt the need to be neutral as I navigate the local politics….

Your experiences in becoming a political activist are inspiring, educational, and informative. Just recently, I made contact with a couple of other people in my county who are interested in doing what you have done. To our dismay, the GOP in our county had no leadership whatsoever. Now, however, the guy who was supposed to be the chairman has officially relinquished the title and we can move forward with new leadership. Conservative leadership at that.

For way too long, we all thought that the Republican Party was doing its job, but now we know differently. Doing what you have done, penguin, will not only strengthen the party itself, but will strengthen the bonds within each community for those individuals who love their country and want to work to take it back.

    • penguin2

There are so many holes in the GOP network and in some communities, perhaps like what you are describing, there are downright broken links. All this time, we’ve assumed that the store was running, just not the way we thought it should. Now we are discovering that in some places, nobody is even minding the store.

No wonder the Leftist Dems have been able to come in and rob the place.
But if folks like us get in and get busy, the place won’t know what hit it! :-)

As always, I appreciate your wonderful words and insight, Janis. I still hold my honorary TN citizenship dearly.

Both of you are great inspirations to others to get involved in the real ball game of politics — party politics INSIDE the Party itself. Bravo!

Your persistence in posting about this subject has kept it front and center for all of us. So I thank you fervently for never taking the easy way out and just posting about it now and then. Like penguin, I never want to come face to face with you and have no good reason why I didn’t jump into the pool. :-)

      • FJG

Thank you for writing about your experience as a CP. I will be forwarding your diary onto my friends and family.

And thanks for pushing me to post the diary.

  • penguin2

interesting experience so far. Amazing how many people want to shake your hand and smile and engage in conversation. I have had City Council and School Board members give me their cards. I get invitations to events from some of our State legislators.

Yesterday I was thinking about how water wastage is measured, as in sinks and toilets, if there is even a tiny leak. This seems a fitting analogy. Most of us feel like a drop in the bucket in politics and government, that is why so many think their vote does not count. But those drops are additive and can be measured and all a sudden, one is looking at gallons of water, not a lonely drop.

  • texasgalt

and encouraging to others. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    • penguin2

it has been a great experience. I have learned more about my local government , as well as about the politics, than I had any idea of before. One of these days we need to have EE post an Open Thread so all of us who have become precinct committeemen can note it, and then we will all see what a difference RedState, and ColdWarrior, et al have made.

  • shaitra

I joined the county GOP and was immediately made a voting member with my paid dues. Hubby joined with me and he was also made a voting member. We’ve been to the county caucus and our district caucus already to vote on resolutions. Next month we will be attending the state convention as voting members. Hubby has also volunteered to be a Sargent-at-Arms.

The party has been very welcoming and happy to have us. We are excited to be actually doing something about changing our government. I encourage everyone to make that call to your local GOP and get involved.

And thanks Penguin2 for sharing your experience.

    • penguin2

Sounds like you have been attending the same kinds of meetings and becoming a delegate to many things. I have found the folks seem almost eager to see us. After all, we do represent votes and maybe so much more as we become educated and try to inform others.

At least it has helped to meet others who share the same concerns.

      Thank you.

    • http://www.theprecinctproject.wordpress.com ColdWarrior

Please consider writing up a short Diary in the future as to your experiences will undoubtedly spur on others to get INTO the Party to change it. We conservatives must UNITE where it matters: INSIDE the Republican Party itself.

      Thank you!

      ColdWarrior

      • shaitra

I’ll work on that over the weekend. :-)

  • klondike

I must have read Cold Warrior’s site two or three dozen times before I took the leap. The section on how to do it was invaluable because it detailed how difficult it would be to find answers, and how to ultimately succeed. Boy howdy, was Cold Warrior on target!

I found it inconceivable that I had to spend so much time and effort trying to find out how to get involved. I think it is in this area that the GOP has failed miserably just on its own – forget about the DNC being light years ahead of us in that regard. Thank you for your leadership and guidance in that regard, CW.

I hesitated to get involved in committee precinct project because I didn’t know what the obligations were or what time commitment would be required. Cold Warrior’s incessant nagging ultimately caused me to take the leap. It was becoming difficult to reconcile my insistence that my friends and family members get involved and support candidates, yet I was not really “involved,” just supporting. I found myself nagging my friends and family as much as Cold Warrior was nagging my conscience.

Penguin, I, too, was immediately welcomed at my first meeting, and ever since. When I e-mailed the Chairman of our local Republican Party and asked how to become a committee precinct person, I received an immediate “Call me!” reply. The people are wonderful, they are energized, and it is wonderful to be around such knowledgeable people. I, too, am learning a lot. I’m embarrassed to see how truly ignorant I was (and still am).

This new Precinct Captain shakes your new Precinct Captain’s hand.

I haven’t decided what wishes to send Cold Warrior, the bane of my existence. :)

    • penguin2

at least once or twice. Relentless, unyielding, and one who surely lives up to his Warrior name. Now you are among those that do not have to avoid eye contact with the man, if ever you two should meet.

Congratulations and I am so glad you have found what I have – that the GOP needs and and wants us. Maybe things are a little rusty in some places, but we can try to make a difference.

  • ocleverone

I am going to be in your neck of the woods next weekend helping a Congressional candidate, Bert Mizusawa.

    • penguin2

His story and history is excellent. He is one of the first candidates I met, and has outstanding credentials. And a Conservative!

Now I am trying to figure out how you and I can meet up. He knows me and that I write here as penguin. If you tell them about a certain penguin from RedState, and I let them know someone from RS is helping them next weekend, we might be able to meet up.

Let me know what you think of such a plan. Isn’t it great what a “small world” it is? :-)

      • ocleverone

I will certainly do that. I need to get in touch with his Director of Operations and let her know I am coming down to ground pound/telephone call/whatever they need.

I will be down there mid-afternoon on Saturday through Sunday.

After the HRC vote, I promised myself that I would do everything I could to help take out Dem.s. I’ve kept the monetary promise by sending as much money as I can to candidates, now it is the labor part.

I hope we can meet up! It would be so wonderful to meet you in person. We missed each other at the first DC protest – let’s correct that.

        • penguin2

folks doing some ground operations here. One of my contacts is TJ.May@BertforCongress (just add the .com) I’ll let him know about you coming.

  • penguin2

I wish I could find adequate words to express to all of you how much I appreciate the support you give my diaries. I am humbled that you find my posts worthwhile.

I can tell you that it truly touches this penguin’s heart.

  • hickorystick

We live on opposite sides of the country, but with your writing, your like somebody I could have known. We live in a big country, with multiple time zones, 50 different sovereign states each with unique histories and culture. But your story is one that is and should be repeated across the 50 states.

“the speakers we have had include local government officials, state Congressional Delegates and Senators, City Council and School Board officials.”

We all turn on the nightly news and watch in horror as our country is turned upside down and wish we could do something about it. Well, the people who have some power, just came to you. Like Tip O’Neil said, All politics is Local.
    Thanks for writing this!

    • penguin2

me how accessible so many of the officials have turned out to be, and that they want to know what we are thinking. I hope many others will take a first step and they will see how rewarding can be.

  • http://thesandsinstitute.org Vassar Bushmills

We need to take it back. There are more crazies from your neck of the woods in the VA General Assembly than the rest of the state combined.

I hope you start kicking over chairs and turning over tables if they don’t move fast enough for you :)

  • penguin2

It has been fascinating to see the game in play. The competition between the six primary candidates for VA-02 and the two-man race for 2nd District Chairmanship has been enlightening. We actually lost one of the original candidates in the VA-02 primary, our long-time chairman of our local GOP has dropped off of the GOP primary ticket and is considering an Independent run. So already I am getting a glimpse of the heavy stuff behind the scenes.

Everyone has been gracious to me, so I’ll smile sweetly and not let them off the hook. From the words they are all putting forth, it is clear they know what the people want and are saying it. The problem: the politicians always do this and then we see a different result post-mortem.

It is going to take awhile to right the ship, but at least we’re trying.

#demonpenguin pic. I do not have it though.

Just kidding. You will be great and will turn the place around with your kindness.

  • janis

and turning over tables is the day when we’d ALL better be ducking and covering. She’s so nice that it would indeed require a major betrayal to make her that mad.

I am pretty certain that our “leadership” is capable of it, however.

Only I didn’t have to pay any membership fee. A couple of years ago I called my local GOP office asking for some info on an upcoming election. The county chair asked me if I wanted to be a PC and I said yes. The fact is, if you’re willing to just say YES, you can likely be a Precinct Committeeman in your state.

The required duty is to appoint your parties election judges for your precinct. Other than that, the job is what you make of it. Like Penguin, my county has a monthly breakfast meeting. It costs $10/person to show up for breakfast and probably just covers the cost.

During the elections I was sought out by candidates who wanted to get my support. I never received so much mail addressed to “The Honorable Brian Hibbert” in my life. When I’d go to “meet the candidate” events, the candidates would come looking for ME to talk rather than me having to stand in lines to talk to them.

I was just appointed to the county executive committee as secretary. I’ll now be in the meetings where local decisions are made on how to raise money, what campaigns to donate money to, what events the county party should participate in, etc. My job is primarily to keep the minutes, but I also get a voice.

All this from making a simple phone call.

People, the party is desperate for your help and in return, you get to help steer the party towards a more conservative outlook. Don’t expect it to happen overnight, but as more of us get inside the party workings, the more this party will come around.

  • earlgrey

At the tea party yesterday I went to the booth for the local GOP, and I asked them why this guy on a blog keeps talking about how important it is to be a precinct committteeman (I was referring to Cold Warrior). They explained it to me. I told them I had already sent in my information to try and become one, but I wanted a card from someone in case I didn’t hear back. They obliged and urged me to attend a local republican club meeting near me.

It will be hard to manage with a job requiring travel and two small kids, but there are some things you just have to do. That’s how strongly I feel about this.

The repubs also urged me to get my tea party group active in the local republican party. They basically echoed what Erick has been saying. Erick is right. I’ll still be a tea party actiivist, but if I get inside the party, maybe I can pull in a few other tea partiers. This wouldn’t be happening for me without Red State.

  • penguin2

organizations want and need the folks to show up. And by being involved in several I am getting the opportunity to see how connected all of these things are.

Each time I go to one of the meetings and the candidates are there, they come right up to me and start talking. I’d like to think that our District really understands how serious and important it is to connect with the people to win back this House seat.

Fixing whatever weaknesses the GOP has at the national level, cannot really be accomplished, until we deal with making things better at the local level.

  • Brian Hibbert

There are thousands of local GOP organizations and some are more active than others. What you’ll probably find is that they are run by average local people who do what they can with the time they have. In some cases, the people running the organizations aren’t very good at it. That’s when you can step in and start helping things run smoother.

One other thing, party jobs don’t pay anything (at least at the local level). But like you said, it’s important that SOMEONE do it and if no one else is doing the work, you will have to.

All that is required for evil to take control is for good people to stand by and do nothing. You are doing something.

    Thank you.

  • penguin2

local Republican party organizations will be a big help. I have seen a lot of energy with the local tea party folks and some are showing up in our meetings. Tapping that can only help us, because they are the visible signs of the momentum occurring in the local communities.

  • penguin2

Meaning I forgot something. Thank you so much for your efforts, and it certainly isn’t easy with the demands on your time that you noted. But if each person just tries to do a little bit, it can make a difference. Keep us posted on your GOP journey……

  • penguin2

happy to see new faces and have people interested in getting involved and helping the party.

I’ll try to do us proud. :-)

…but He was not impervious to it. He kicked over a table or two. Chalk one up for righteous indignation. I’m sure both you will be equally discerning…and we’ll always have your backs.

on occasion. My feathers do get ruffled, mostly when I have been so trusting and then find out all sorts of principles are being violated. The Leftist assault on traditional America has had me in a dither, which prompted me to find a way to fight back. I hope it is enough.
