Where Have All the Flags Gone?

Where Have All the Flags Gone?

US Flag

I am posting this before Memorial Day for a reason; I do not want any RedStater to have guilt after the holiday.

When I was growing up, there was strong patriotic sentiment, reinforced in our schools and in the public square.  Patriotic holidays were more than just a special sale for the malls, or huge flags on the car lots.  Patriotic hymns were sung in churches and taught in public schools.  Almost everywhere was the reinforcement of love of God and Country.  The two went together.  I believe that most of us grew up in families that flew the flag on special days, especially the ones that honored those that fought and died for our nation, and of course, the birthday of our Declaration of Independence.  We honored America and her people, the surrounding culture supported and reinforced this.  That is what culture and society is supposed to do, reinforce the foundational precepts upon which a nation exists.  We celebrated America.  Isn’t that a beautiful thought, to honor and express support and affection for a land that gives us all opportunity?

What happened?

The upheaval of the sixties brought severe societal and cultural changes, not so obvious then, but the gradual long term effect of those times have finally borne fruit. Unfortunately, some of this is rotten fruit. The  secular socialists in society have taken hold of our core societal institutions – academia, government, schools, and even our churches.  In 1962, they managed to remove God from public schools, laying the groundwork for taking God out of the public square.  There has always been an entwined relationship between the founding principles of this nation and a belief in our Creator.  The Founding Fathers wove it throughout their documents, and anyone who reads their works can see the connection and the threads of the fabric they laid out for us, to take us through the ages.

What has the secular Left  brought us?  While they seek to take God out of the public consciousness, with diligent relentless efforts, they have also been marginalizing patriotism and love of America.  In fact, today we are seeing blatant anti-Americanism, and Achance recently gave us some background on this here.  The schools don’t teach the patriotic songs like they used to, the churches don’t even sing them, though they remain in the hymnals.  Yes, I know some of this is anecdotal, but there have been enough news stories that support what we see locally in our own school systems and churches.  Kids are sent home for wearing a t-shirt with an American flag on it, and the assistant principle says he sent them home to avoid inciting violence.   Ever since a Leftist administration came into power, the efforts to undermine traditional American support and loyalty has accelerated, but the groundwork was laid decades before.  There is an unrestrained assault on traditional America, no holds barred.  We read about it everywhere.  Traditional Americans are marginalized, disparaged and treated as if they are the perpetrators of some horrible crime.  Arizona has been excoriated since passing a law that is a duplicate of Federal Law, and simply says they are going to begin to enforce the law that protects their sovereign borders.

Where have all the flags gone?

The American flag is strictly a symbol, an emblem that represents a nation founded on Judaic-Christian principles, a land of freedom and opportunity.  The American Revolution was fought and blood spilled to bring about her birth.  Blood spilled for the 1st Amendment that allows one to burn the flag as free speech. Wars have been fought to maintain this nation, from within and without.  Countless Americans (and others) have died to keep this land free, and the spirit of American Exceptionalism, alive.  I see the flag as representative of her people.  The American people have character, strength, durability and a can do willingness that has yet to be surpassed by other nations.  When catastrophe strikes, it is the United States that responds; our military is the best in the world, made up of the Americans who get down in the trenches, they bring humanitarian aid, and they also fight tyrannical genocidal enemies, while assisting others to survive and be free.

Where have all the flags gone?

Until recently, citizens of this country, from both parties, lived their patriotism and flew their flag and spoke positively about their country.  The passing decades have brought a distinct change in the culture, and genuine expressions of patriotism and respect for our nation and the flag have decreased.  Been to some recent sporting event or something similar, and seen how many pay no attention to the National Anthem.  Don’t place their hand over their heart?  Well, as the years have gone by, stop and think about it, the flag isn’t in abundance either, some end up in the trash.  As the veterans of past wars die off, and society has separated itself from God and Country, there is a sorrowful loss of cherishing and honoring that which is symbolic to this great nation.  Yes, we saw a resurgence of patriotism and flag waving after 9/11, but it did not seem to stay with us as it should have.  Each passing year our people are succumbing to the assault from the Left.  Call it secularism, socialism or Communism – all of it is designed to separate the American people from their heart and character.

But we can have a resurgence.  As we are seeking to take back our country and government, we can fly ‘Old Glory’ with love and affection, and yes, a hint of defiance, because that is what keeping that beautiful flag flying means; it means our nation is still standing and supported by those that love her.  Men and women have died so that, “long may she wave” – we’ll not yield the colors now.  Think about that when you go to your closet and dust off that banner, or replace a worn one.  Or consider a family member who might appreciate hoisting their first America flag, or an elderly neighbor who used to have one out, but may need assistance to put it up.  Much like Cold Warrior and his Precinct Committeeman Project, RedStaters can fly their flags, and influence someone, somewhere, one flag at a time.

Whenever I put up my flag, I allow the sentimental feelings to flow and make no apologies, neither did Johnny Cash when he sang this.  After all, what we are doing at RedState is fighting for the right to fly that beautiful symbol that represents freedom, and love of God and Country.  We do it for this, “Sweet Land of Liberty.”

It represents so much of the good that this country has accomplished and offers. It is a symbol that the Left will not and cannot bring down for me – ever, no matter how hard they try. And try they do.

will not falter. When I think of all those who have gone before us and died to keep us free, I know that we cannot let them down.

…has been to Iraq and Kuwait with me. I had all my guys sign it with Sharpie, and hopefully it’ll someday be in my shadowbox. It flys only once a year.
The flag is today a reminder of what our great country was once, and will be again, God willing and with a lot of hard work.

        • penguin2

words to express appreciation for what you all have done. As we honor those that have served and died this weekend, we will keep in mind those that are still doing all they can do to keep us free.

May God Bless you and your buddies.

Thank you, again, for your assist with the picture. As I sit here at the computer, out of the corner of my eye, through the window, I can see my flag catching the breeze. “Long may she wave.”

the NAACP group with Sharpton that after 9-11 WE had put all old hurts to rest he was telling the TRUTH! There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that WE were all Americans that day and for months thereafter UNTIL the Democrats decided to make it political.

I have been unable to respect ANY Democrats since that time and they have only proven themselves to be more invested in their “vision” of America then the TRUE vision of America which is a Country of people bound together by their love of the FLAG which represents US all!

I truly LOVE this Country and her FLAG more then myself :)

    • JadedByPolitics

EXCELLENT DIARY! I just planted my flower beds yesterday in front of my house and put ALL my American Flags in the beds with them and when I get home later I will post those pictures to this beautiful diary.

        Your words,

I truly LOVE this Country and her FLAG more then myself

I think many of us feel the same way, just sometimes we forget – until we are once called once again to defend her – and that we will.

Here are the lyrics for those interested:

      When the night
      Seems to say
      All hope is lost
      Gone away
      But I know
      I’m not alone
      By the light
      She stands

      There she waves
      Faithful friend
      Shimmering stars
      Westward wind
      Show the way
      Carry me
      To the place
      She stands

Just when you think it might be over
Just when you think the fight is gone
Someone will risk his life to raise her
      There she stands

      There she flies
      Clear blue skies
      Reminds us with red
      Of those that died
      Washed in white
      By the brave
      In their strength
      She stands

When evil calls itself a martyr
When all your hopes come crashing down
Someone will pull her from the rubble
      There she stands

We’ve seen her flying torn and tattered
We’ve seen her stand the test of time
And through it all the fools have fallen
      There she stands

      By the dawn’s
      Early light
      And through the fight
      She stands

      • penguin2

and seeing those pictures. I know Michael W. Smith’s music, but had not seen this. Cried through the whole thing, but it is seeing such sights that gives me hope. “Pull her from the rubble…There she stands.”

God Bless you for sharing this today. I’m sure each time I view the video, I’ll be tearful, but also so proud of those that serve this country and the world.

        I hope we never forget.

when I hear Patriotic songs. I was never in the military, and am kicking myself for not joining. Both mt grandfather and my father were doctors in the Army.

This weekend should be a way to show respect to all those that paid the ultimate sacrifice for us to enjoy the freedoms we take for granite.

    IT IS THE SOLDIER

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
    Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

    • penguin2

my spine just reading them. God Bless those who give their lives, gave their fortunes, and pledge their sacred honor. Because that is exactly what serving this country means; pledging your life to protect and defend her.

Strangely enough, BRW, even those who may not have served, would throw down their plowshares and take up arms to defend this land as well, so in a way you are representative of the citizens soldiers of this country. These are the ones that I write about, the American people with heart and character; Moses Sands and Vassar’s Common man and woman – the people who love and serve this nation, in a variety of ways.

on Memorial Day because he’s “vacationing in Chicago.” Who the Hell vacations in Chicago; it’s a place you LEAVE when you can, not a place you go.

Does anyone recall any President in living memory NOT participating in the Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington Cemetery? This guy just plumbed a new depth if this is true!

    • Mary Beth

And no I don’t recall any President in my lifetime skipping out on Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery…and I grew up in the DC area, a hop, skip and a jump on the Metro away from the Cemetery.

    • http://theminorityreportblog.com Repair_Man_Jack

associated in any way with the legitimate and honorable heroes who protect the welfare of our nation? Isn’t it bad enough to have him as CinC?

His grubby feet could defile what is intended as holy and sacred ground.

      • Mary Beth

I don’t have anything positive to say about this President, but he is the President…and our fallen deserve to be honored by anyone who sits in the Oval Office.

It should be an honor do acknowledge their sacrifice on behalf of the nation…but then I don’t think like this President does. For me, Chicago O’Hare is a nice stopover airport to better locations.

Knowing how many of his administration seek to take down America and are anti-military, well then it almost sacrilege for them to be hypocrites and pay lip service to that which they detest. This is one time, I realize, we need no further pretense….

    • ffc99

Chicago, Achance, tons of folks vacation there. This is actually a great time to visit. Nice weather, the lake, restaurants, museums, bars, etc. Just thinking about it makes me want to schedule a trip….

With that being said, the President should be at Arlington on Mem Day.

      • Achance

have lived in the country for the last 23 years and am no longer capable of having to live around so many people in smaller spaces. When I go to Nashville, I cannot wait to get back to the 4-lane highway that heads me toward home once more.

So many people in an increasingly smaller amount of space reminds me of those studies done of rats when their population was allowed to explode and they all started turning on each other with more and more rage.

While this has its’ advantages, it also means much shorter temperatures, and .. the aroma of any big city.

This is who America elected. We all deserve this faculty lounge punk.

    • penguin2

We all know him for the hypocrite he is, and now his true anti-Americanism and contempt for the military is showing. (You told us all along he was a Communist.)

I think it is better he stay away.

Let those that truly love America go and honor those that served her. We will bring our flags and flowers, and give them our gratitude. After Memorial Day, we will remember and make sure they did not serve, nor die in vain.

    • larueladue

And the same thoughts immediately went through my mind. I could not imagine a sitting President not being at Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day. And to “vacation” in Chicago, of all places he can go… A massive snub to veterans, and to the country and its history.

But I thought a bit about this, and decided that perhaps this is better for all. This exposes his true nature to everyone, in a way that cannot be ignored or swept under the rug. Even ambivalent Patriots will take notice, and, in the long run, this cannot do anything but damage him in ways that cannot be easily healed. Hopefully, it will help shore up opposition to everything the administration tries to do.

(I cannot believe that his handlers allowed him to do this….)

      • penguin2

        to:

(I cannot believe that his handlers allowed him to do this

        • larueladue

As for the handlers, maybe they are starting to run out of innovative or effective ways to keep “The One” out of bad trouble with the normal people of the country. And perhaps they are just getting weary of the continuing sham, as it doesn’t seem to be working well anymore. This action seems like they decided to drop the act, and this is a sign that they are going to try to blatantly force everything down our throat now, rather than go through the motions of trying to entice us to their side. It seems like they don’t think that it is worth the effort anymore…

If this is the case, things will get a lot more ugly, but it could make our job easier in the long run… It is getting harder and harder to hide or obscure “The One’s” real nature and mission in life…

          • pragmatic

I would love to see a reporter, or anyone for that matter, ask him why his handlers allow him to do some of the things he does. It may be petty but I think his response would show his true colors better than almost anything (not that we need another reminder).

Thanks for the post and reminder, penguin. I’m ashamed that as a veteran that I don’t have a flag to fly at my home. Will be remedied tomorrow.

Thank you veterans and all those who stand up for this great nation.

It sickens me to see this President disrespect the soldiers like this

  • janis

that were flying up and down both sides of many roads in McMinnville, TN last week. Took my granddaughter for her ballet lesson and couldn’t figure out why there was so much traffic. Nor why so many pickup trucks were driving around with full size flags flying from poles strapped onto the beds of them. Then we turned a corner onto the main road into downtown and there in front of us were not only flags lining the highway, but there was an enormous flag hanging high over the road from a huge crane. I didn’t know why until we got to class, but the sight was deeply moving anyway.

Turns out that the entire town had shown up to honor one of their own, an American soldier who was KIA in Afghanistan and was buried that day. The American flag is still beloved and deeply honored in small towns and rural areas all over this country. Another local boy was brought home this past Sunday in Smithville, TN, also KIA in Afghanistan. And he got the same honor there, too, with flags flying proudly along the route the hearse took from the airport, held by friends, family and strangers who showed up to honor a hero who fought for that flag.

Obama and Co. have shown us that they have no love for that flag and what she represents. Their in-your-face dishonoring of all the principles embodied in that flag are waking up many who would have preferred to sleep. His most recent decision to vacation in Chicago instead of honoring the fallen in Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day is a resounding slap in the face to every one of the heroes who laid down their lives for that flag.

    It will not go unnoticed.

    • penguin2

There are beautiful and deeply moving videos out from some of these incredible tributes. Thank God we still have enough traditional, freedom loving Americans around to honor them. Ironically, when things go bad, it will be those dependent citizens in the blue cities and states that will whine the most about their losses, and loss of freedom. I hope they sink into quicksand.

As far as the current president, I reacted just as you did when I heard the news of his vacation instead of honoring the dead at Arlington. But it is a good thing, really. Those that are buried there do not have to have their sacred ground sullied by such a hypocrite. Now, once and for all, the anti-Americanism of this president and his administration is clear for all the world to see.

Those that lie under those white stones, here and overseas, know they rest in the arms of the Creator. It is to Him that their souls are entrusted to, not man. In the meantime, we will place our flags and flowers, and offer up prayers of thanksgiving for those that gave “the last full measure of devotion…”

    Awesome post, Mrs. Penguin2!

The media and most people will ignore Memorial Day, or anything to do with our country in general, but there are still enough of us who do love our country to make it worth while.

    • penguin2

It is comforting and heartening to know how many of us are still out there who love our country. I see the flag, our people, and beautiful land, and I am grateful and humbled.

a huge one hanging from my house, small ones in all my flower pots, and I am right now looking at one standing on my desk. I don’t display them once a year, they are there all year round. I replace them when they get torn and worn out. My husband has a POW-MIA flag hanging on the door to Andyland (mancave or whatever). He spent 7 years in the Navy. He likes to say that the military made a man out of an arsehole. He has seen so much of the world, and said he was never happier than when he put his feet back on American soil. I imagine what it must be like in third world countries, he has seen it for himself.

You are so correct, this president need not sully the soil of our passed on finest and bravest. The true patriots, that still believe in American Exceptionalism, will be there honoring the fallen.

Memorial Day is an American Holiday, why ever would the O celebrate anything so discriminatory.

    • penguin2

I don’t think I’ll ever forget how I felt the day after the election in 08. I went and got the flag out of the closet and put it up, (usually had it out on weekends). I remember feeling sad and tearful, but for some reason felt the “call” to put up the flag, – had a touch of defiance go through me when I did. I did not know then why it seemed important, I think I do now.

I’m with you on only those that truly love and honor those that lie beneath those stones, should be there. No hypocrites required or desired.

      Thank you, Scope.

And the fervor with which we elementary school kids would belt out the Marine Corps Anthem, the Army anthem as well. That was preceded by us reciting the pledge of allegiance, hands firmly over our little hearts while facing the flag in our classroom. It was also an honor to be able to help raise the flag on the flagpole outside and then to help take it down and learn to fold it appropriately. That was back in the days when you were not supposed to leave the flag flying when it rained or when night came.

I wish those days were still here. The ritual and ceremony helped to make us feel protected within the framework of God and country.

Great read and a great reminder…

Last year the flag that usually flies from my front porch was stolen at the same time my McCain-Palin signs were thrown into the street in front of my house. I will be stopping on my way home today pick up another flag.

That incident happened a day before the general election, and to be truthful, after seeing the results I didn’t feel much pride in my country. I was saddened that our fellow citizens let us down. The only way to change their vote is to change their mind. The only way to change their mind is by raising awareness, and many here at RedState are doing just that.

    Thanks again Penguin!

I meant to mention about disposing of worn flags.

Wouldn’t it be great if each RedStater managed to get at least one other person to fly the flag?

She is a Grand Old Flag!

    Thank you, LadyP.

Mary Beth, Scope, and spim, thank you for those additional videos!

Scope, when I was at Arlington this past December for laying of the wreaths, I was fortunate to attend an Army Band Christmas concert that the Army was filming so it could broadcast it to all of the bases around the world. I was blown away. It didn’t have the full chorus, but those they had were absolutely phenomenal. I sat in awe as I watched and listened. The video you posted of the Army Chorus affected me almost the same way.

tcgeol, I share your sentiment. It is diaries such as this that cause me to really appreciate RedState.

Your reminder about Johnny Cash and his awesome “Ragged Old Flag” was perfect. You’re right, their have been some beautiful additions to this post, and I will always treasure them. I hope that people were uplifted and even strengthened in spirit, especially for whatever the future brings.

      Thank you.

We can never repay those that made the sacrifice for us all. I am just in awe at what they go through to keep us save and defend out country and way of life.

      • klondike

I just finished listening to that last video you posted. There are two sounds that cause me to tear up: TAPS and bagpiped Amazing Grace. Okay, maybe just a tad more than tear up. That was beautiful.

        • http://stixblog.com Black River Wolf

about taps, I think I had enough tears for today though.

      • penguin2

        Powerful and moving.
Thank you so much, for bringing them to the diary.

I thought I’d seen every patriotic video every made, but now I know otherwise.

Black River Wolf, what is depicted at the 2:51 mark?

Have you been to the war memorials in D.C.? I ask only because of the several shots of the Korean War Memorial, which I was glad to see included in the video. It is an extremely moving memorial.

      • http://stixblog.com Black River Wolf

I just found the video. I love Sgt MacKenzie.. I can try and find it though.

I have been to DC 4 times ans still have not had a chance to see Arlington, was too busy. But I know next CPAC I am going early and will go see them.

The Field of Stars and Pillars of Light. That is what I thought it was, but was not sure

I have visited the WWII memorial four times, and I don’t recall that scene. I guess I need to pay more attention. I recall taking in the entire memorial (awesome), but mostly I remember studying the individual tiles depicting scenes from that war.

Thank you. The next time I go to D.C. (I ALWAYS take in the memorials), I will pay closer attention.

          • http://stixblog.com Black River Wolf

But it is a beautiful memorial

  • klondike

You posted the second video before my question about the 2:51 mark posted. That question related to the first video.

I’ll not be addin’ to the tears tonight. BRW did enough, thanks to you as well!

    • penguin2

for some of this moisture around here.

We’ll treasure our flag and this country, and never give up. Those that have gone before us expect us to carry on.

  • redneck_hippie

We can thank you for the uptick in kleenex’s stock price.

I don’t think the snub is at all a coincidence. He has just been paid in kind at West Point, not to mention his lap dogs are yapping at him about his Katrina and the potential felonious job offer. I tend to think it is mostly the latter 2 that scared him out of DC this weekend. I really do not believe he gives our traditions and sacred holidays even a second thought.

I’ve been through with the PResident since the Honduran debacle–and his failed presidency is no more than a dark, dark cloud over our great and beautiful country. We’ll prevail. We have to.

    • penguin2

the poignant videos. Truly they are great reminders and a testament to the heart and soul of this nation.

You have described the current president and his administration accurately, a “dark cloud over our great and beautiful country.” The Founding Fathers certainly experienced dark and uncertain days – they still prevailed. We can, too.

Every time we raise the flag we honor those that died for this great nation. God and Country.

In the fourth generation yuppie neighborhoods, fuhgheddaboudit!

    Sigh

    • penguin2

America are the ones that come from those first and second generation ethnic families, (Greek for me). As you note, by the time they get to the fourth generation….

It is something that has to be passed on, found in the traditions of the family and in childhood. It also has to be reinforced by the surrounding culture and society. These expressions of patriotism and adherence to the traditions that support God and Country, have been slowly stripped away. I think it is a combination of affluence and the secular Left, which has caused this. It also seems to be human nature to forget; gratitude is essential for appreciating the gifts this land has to offer. Humility is part of that as well.

Self-reliance and survivor skills are part of the Independent spirit and character of the American people. Replacing that with dependency on the State, weakens the individual and ultimately the nation.

I am afraid the people will not grab hold again of their inner strengths and stand for this nation, until there is challenge and threatened loss of liberty. We saw that a little bit after 9/11, but the inroads for weakening America from within had been so great……it did not last.

Now we are faced with our defining moment.

  • http://www.redstate.com/tnjim TNJim

    ‘Nuff said.

Display it proudly, with honor to those who served, are serving, will serve. Display it with pride for the country that has been the model of liberty for the world. Display it with hope, for Obama won’t be president forever, apologizing for our, and the flag’s, very existence.

    • penguin2

Our hearts beat true for the “red, white and blue.” I love the eagle superimposed with the flag.

The scene of the burning Towers, and the words “the lives you stole.” How can so many Americans forget that attack and loss?

God Bless the men and women who serve this nation, God Bless America. We say that freely here at RedState.

      Thank you, TNJim.

I so far have avoided posting this song because I am an unabashed sap when it comes to listening to it, which tells me that I am not objective. But since this site is a rather safe haven for conservative passion (God love you all – thank you), I hope you will indulge me in this offering. I was blessed to be living in a city that had a great country music station that played this song over and over again after 9/11. I sang it as loud as I could on my way to work every morning. I later got the dedicated CD. I tend to rotate music CDs, but this is one that I will have until the day I die.

This is another of my favorites that I played over and over again after 9/11 and to this day never tire of hearing:

God love all of you have served, are serving, and who wanted to serve but were unable to for one reason or another. I thank you for your patriotism and love of this country and its founding values.

    And thank you, LadyP.

My favorite part of the Memorial Day program at Arlington is the Parade of the Flags and the music that’s played along with it. Often, I can’t get that music out of my head. (And I’m glad I can’t.)

I heard the song American Anthem for the first time maybe 4 or 5 years ago on Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery. It was sung just before the start of the official program, so the title of the song wasn’t listed on the program.. From the first 1/4 of the first verse, I knew I was listening to something amazing and will always be thankful to the sailor who sang it. I can still see her now in her know singing the song and representing it’s spirit. I remembered the words, and when I got home found out the name of the song and the background on the Internet, and that it was written in 1986. It helped me realize that all the good books and all the good music haven’t been written yet, and it wasn’t all done centuries ago, but God still inspires us today.

Song starts about 2:10, with the author singing in on the last verse.

    • penguin2

Good to see you and hope all is well.

The American flag and what she stands for has always been close to my heart, and now, more than ever – “we’ll not yield the colors.”

  • OccamsRazor

I recollect many of such services as a child and how I detested waking up so early for Mass. Then, upon smelling the early morning, and walking past each Cross and each Star of David, holding my mother’s hand, I tried to memorize the names to clear my mind-better than coffee for a 7 year old-for I knew the gravitas _even then_ of what happened-some semblance of the history and sacrifice. Perhaps Obama feels now as I did, as if a child overwhelmed. And while he doesn’t yet understand the gravitas of stepping within the Hollowed grounds of Arlington cemetery, I’d just as easily assume he’d not-no harm no foul. No disgrace. No understanding.

    • penguin2

Beautiful way to state it, and yes it is a sense of “history and sacrifice.” It is the intuitiveness of something far greater than ourselves. Hallowed ground that we walk softly and quietly on, so as not to disturb the spirit of those that gave their all.

      We owe them so much.

  • stephaniet

I shall henceforth scurry out and get our flag flying. We have a new one this year, replacing the old battered one we flew for so long.

My neighbors have a flag on a tall pole in their yard. I can look out my window right now and see it fluttering in the breeze. She looks beautiful this afternoon, her red, white, and blue against the clear blue of an Indiana sky…

This also reminds me of something I have picked up from reading/watching stuff about 19th century battles. From what I’ve gathered, I’ve assumed that the colors were the most important part. You *did not* let the colors fall, no matter what.

    • penguin2

catching the breeze. Yes, that was so important in battle, to keep the standard flying; so the men would not lose heart and falter.

It seems just as important today, though we may wage a different type of warfare, “we’ll not yield the colors.”
