ABC News’ Pathetic Attempt to Influence SC — Let the Backlash Begin

It’s rather moribund to watch a once fabled news organization become a shell of  its former self.  The decision by network brass to leak excerpts of its interview with Newt Gingrich’s embittered former wife #2, and its airing of the interview on Nightline, leaves no doubt in this viewer’s/voter’s mind that muckraking has become their cause celebre.

I’m sure, that they’re sure, it’s their duty as a news organization to keep the public informed.  We even read on Drudge about the “internal debate about the ethics” of airing the interview.  Seriously. We’re not fools.  We’ve already witnessed the blatant partisanship exhibited by their two moderators (note, I do not call them journalists, not even Diane qualifies for that anymore) in the ABC sponsored debate.  And now this latest volley.  Newt must really have the MSM a tad worried, ya think?  But more importantly, will the voters buy into whatever is spewed throughout the day.

All of us on Red State know Newt’s baggage and his flaws–an ego for one, hubris for another, not to mention a underlying temper (Bain) which always has the potential to affect his decision-making.  But I think Newt, for the most part, has turned his life around, and should be taken very seriously as an alternative to Mitt’ns.

Rick Perry, who is leaving the race officially, is an honorable man with a stellar record as governor.  And because he is a man of honor, I cannot help but wonder that one of the unspoken truths that he’s leaving the race, today, is because he realizes that if the anti-Romney forces are to pull an upset in SC, Newt has the best chance against Mitt, and therefore, he’ll try to blunt any attempt by ABC to interfere with outcome.

From my perspective, Marianne Gingrich may be just what Newt needs at this moment.  May the backlash begin.

I bet this will help Newt.
20 year old personal gripes are worthless and insulting to the voters.
I won’t watch it, and hopefully most voters won’t. I do despair at the cultural low so many have devolved into, though I doubt they are voters.

so should all of Newt’s flaws be trotted out. Why should Romney be attacked non-stop in the media the last few days, and Newt be exempt? I am glad this baggage is going to be on full display so the SC voters can see why Newt is one of the most unelectable (in general election) candidates we have.

    Which Newt is not.

didn’t work out so well for Cain. And I bet they won’t work out well for Newt. Don’t cheat on your wives and you might be exempt from these kinds of “gripes”.

From all I could ever see, Mrs. G #2 was one high-maintenance woman. I don’t support cheating, but I can’t blame Newt for wanting to get away from that. The little clip I have seen of her so far does not make her look good. And the fact that she ‘stole’ Newt from someone else means that it was just a case of ‘thief take from thief’. If any liberals make hay of this, just tell them that the only difference between Newt and Clintion was that his was WAS prepared to ‘share’ him and Newt’s wouldn’t.

The one thing that continually gets forgotten in the talk about Newt’s ex-wives, is that Newt had a major religious conversion. He became a Catholic, and by all accounts it has straightened his life up.

George W. Bush was a party boy and a drunk before he found religion. Anyone that looks at his life can see that religion was the major factor in him cleaning up his life.

Gingrich became a Catholic, and it seems to have seriously impacted his life.

I know there are people that think religion can’t change a person’s life. I happen to disagree with them; I believe it can even make some people turn their lives around on a dime.

What has someone done after they “get religion?” Have they changed? Do they now walk a different path? Those are the questions that matter to me, not what they did in their past.

Dwelling in people’s long past mistakes is the same as saying religion has no impact on a person; that there is no such thing as forgiveness and redemption. I just can’t buy into that.

after 2 divorces. I don’t trust his conversion changing anything for he is still the same mean spirited and dishonest man. His Bain “documentary” was a joke.

    philandering a’ok.

You can’t be a sympathetic character when running for President. Ruthless is the term I would use. And I would further apply that to a number of long-time sitting members of the House and Senate as well.

I’m going to run the risk that there’s nothing more to this interview than a rehash of the Esquire piece only with some more venom thrown in. I know a number of people that I say to myself, well, at least you don’t have to go home to that at night.

My position was that ABC News maybe the loser in all this when dust settles, similar to what happened to Dan Rather years ago.

4 years of Newt as Speaker – 11 millions jobs and a balanced budget.

  • jakeofalltrades

These are electability issues – not conservatism issues and certainly not jobs issues outside, perhaps, Nevada. So whether philandering is OK depends on what you’re talking about.

I think it will hurt Newt’s chances against Romney and Obama. Even so, Newt still has a shot of defeating both. Technically, so does Santorum.

They are playing politics in a dirty game. It shows they are scared of gingrich and have been forced to release this now. I think its better now than in the general.

  • Common_Cents

Yes, Newt screwed 2, but Obama has screwed 310,000,000. Pick One.

As a divorced person myself with an ex that has no shred of integrity or we would still be married, I look at this as nothing more than tabloid TV with an agenda. It’s an awful assumption to make that she has anything to add to the conversation. The very fact that she is talking about it shows she lacks class and has nothing more than a personal axe to grind.

The divorce I went through was one of the most difficult times of my life, not only because of the ex’s cheating but because he didn’t want the divorce and he did every mean spirited thing to me he could think of because I was going through with it, including telling mutual friends that I cheated on him. There were a lot of things I could have rightfully been accused of as the marriage was falling apart, but that was one thing I never did. All I wanted was him out of my life and he insisted on shooting arrows. There’s far more sordid details, but those things aren’t for public consumption; and even though I was completely livid over all of it, I would not, today, 22 years later, be found sitting on a couch on camera talking about it. He wasn’t aware of it at the time, but he did me a favor because I let go of that part of my life and went on to much happier things. If I could thank him, I certainly would.

just for the instant Rick Perry bowed out of the race, and Newt was gaining a lot more support n SC prior to Perry’s departure. One could assume that Newt could gain even more support in Perry’s absence.

So, I guess it was the perfect time for ABC to bring out the guns and knock Newt down another peg. The MSM must do everything they can to get Romney to the nomination. Right?
