Appeals to authority
aesthete (Diary) Sunday, August 15th at 5:18PM EDT (link)Misreading of history (look up Goldwater’s history on civil rights), malicious characterization of one’s target audience, and a couple of polls do not a case make. Moreover, this is more a case for the Republican Party to embrace gay marriage out of convenience than an OP arguing the philosophical merits of the same on conservative grounds.
I say this as someone who supports civil unions, and who until recently supported gay marriage.
“It is a popular delusion that the government wastes vast amounts of money through inefficiency and sloth. Enormous effort and elaborate planning are required to waste this much money.”
-P.J. O’Rourke
Policy by polls. Marvelous.
Bill S (Diary) Sunday, August 15th at 8:55PM EDT (link)I don’t give a tinker’s damn what the polls say. Right and wrong are what count.
Based on your statement “Conservatives have a somewhat questionable history with regard civil rights”, I’d say you are, in all likelihood, a moby.
“It’s such a fine line between stupid, and clever.” – David St. Hubbins
It's not all about you
K. (Diary) Sunday, August 15th at 9:18PM EDT (link)There is no inherent right to have homosexual relationships recognized as “marriages” by the state. Walker’s opinion was explicitly based on the idea that gender roles are no longer relevant to marriage. That feminism endorses this idea doesn’t make it any less absurd. Marriage is not simply about romance and whatever satisfies the individuals involved. Family and society have a stake also, and marriage helps protect women from single, aggressive men. Young people today are more receptive to gay marriage because our selfish culture increasingly celebrates living in any sort of way that makes two partners feel good. Relationships previously recognized as less significant than marriage then become elevated to the status of marriage — merely because they satisfy emotional urges. Sorry, but it’s not all about you. Gay marriage is a product of modern individualistic narcissism.
As for my generation, they need a restoration of discipline. This should not take the form of attacking gay marriage specifically but rather the whole culture of narcissism. Seeing homosexual and heterosexual relationships as equal is one part of this culture but not the biggest. Feminism increasingly discourages men from supporting their families and women from caring for their children. “Tolerance” must no longer be warped into an excuse not to criticize slovenly and irresponsible behavior.

Bill S (Diary) Sunday, August 15th at 9:36PM EDT (link)Great comment. Dead on target.
“It’s such a fine line between stupid, and clever.” – David St. Hubbins
That's no justification whatsoever...
rbdwiggins (Diary) Sunday, August 15th at 11:00PM EDT (link)It’s selfish and without regard to the designs of civilized society. It’s based on a historical perspective that defies reality and can only be the product of failed government schools.
“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn’t so.” – Ronald Reagan
We are a nation built
justfedup Monday, August 16th at 11:24AM EDT (link)on Judeo-Christian beliefs. We have already compromised too much. Back to the basics, back to God.
At a minimum, the principle of judicial activism must be resisted
JSobieski (Diary) Monday, August 16th at 1:40PM EDT (link)Even if I agreed that same sex marriage should be legal, having a judge misapply the rules of evidence, misconstrue the “rational basis” rule, and otherwise reverse well established law that was recently affirmed by popular vote is an ABOMINATION.
Process matters, and the actions of Judge Bolton are contrary to our system of government.
