Confessions of a “Call Screener”

It’s a running joke on the Mark Davis Show. Mark will take a call that I’ve placed in the queue, and the caller will say, “Yeah, Mark, I was talking to your call screener,” prompting Mark to play a drop of me saying — in a deservedly, condescending tone — “pro-duuuu-cer.”

I am not a call screener. I’m the producer, but yes . . . I do screen the calls.

With that out of the way, I’d like to share some things I’ve observed as the 2012 primary season has kicked into high gear and delivered to us four very different options for the ticket. My observations aren’t about the candidates themselves, rather they are about the callers who support them.

I’ll break it down by candidate:

Newt Gingrich callers: These folks loathe President Obama and want nothing more than to see Newt reduce him to a pile of rubble on the debate stage. It’s strange … prior to Newt’s win in South Carolina (and subsequent rise in national polls), Newt callers focused more on his accomplishments as Speaker — and rightfully so. But, I haven’t heard the words “Republican Revolution” in the longest time, as now it’s all about the political fantasy of Newt’s big brain beating down Obama and humiliating him. Nevermind that debates don’t win general elections; they don’t care, and you can practically hear them salivating on air. They’re a smart group of folks who identify with the intellectual “Buckleyesque” brand of conservatism. Newt callers are full of righteous anger and come across as indignant as the candidate himself.

Ron Paul callers: It seems pointless to even discuss this. We’ve all seen their online antics. Their methods on the radio are no different. They call and immediately tell me that Mark doesn’t know what he’s talking about, that I am naive, that I need to read the Constitution, that we need to get our facts straight, that there’s a difference between “isolationist” and “non-interventionist” (I get it, already), and that they’re sure I won’t put them on the radio because Mark’s too scared to talk to them — after which I immediately put them on air and watch Mark do what Mark does best.

Mitt Romney callers: These are the “play it safe” callers. The accountant types. The engineers. The process-minded folks. I doubt they meet on the weekends to go cliff rappelling, and they don’t get excited about much of anything. They only know how to do what, to them, makes the most logical sense. Romney has the money and the organization, and they connect this (rightfully so, or not) to success. Nevermind that “hope and change” and emotional propaganda delivered an Obama victory in 2008. These folks don’t care about Mitt’s perceived lack of passion, or his challenges in connecting with voters. Aside from, “He’s a brilliant business man,” I seldom hear references to his record in Massachusetts (for obvious reasons, I assume). Also, far too often my discussions with Romney callers lead to theological debates in which we argue over who Jesus really is. (Yes, I’m saying that we’re inundated with calls from Mormons who — from all appearances — are behind Mitt 100%.)

Rick Santorum callers: So passionate, so frustrated, and so ready to have a president full of integrity, these folks are the ones with whom, I admit, I most identify. Willing to overlook hiccups that will sometimes occur over the course of a long legislative record, Santorum callers speak most of his character. They love his willingness to call it like it is, and even when foreign policy isn’t the story of the day, they rave about his tough stance against radical Islam and his willingness to confront the nuclear threat of Iran. Contrary to the widely reported (and overblown) “gender gap” I have more women call in support of Santorum than men. Aside from the people who call him “Santor-i-um” — an error that I tire of correcting — they are savvy callers who hate the thought of “President Romney” almost as much they do that of President Obama. They are family people. They are Reagan people. They are Christian people. And they are, most important, willing to fight until to the end for their guy — because they feel that he’s fighting for them.

It will be interesting to see how these caller groups evolve over the coming months. As their candidates of choice rise and fall in the polls, and as the inevitability of our nominee becomes more clear, will they stick to their guns or will their support shift? Will they pray for a convention miracle or will they take one for the team and concede? All I can do is state what I see from my humble producer’s perch, and pray that, whatever the outcome, it’s one that facilitates not just the defeat of Barack Obama, but a return to the energy and principles that united our party just two short years ago.

I’ll report back. Thanks for reading,

    Thanks for posting.

      We agree..
Susan, great post. Rick walks the walk, so I believe the talk.

VRick seems to be coming out of a Newtonimum induced fog. I’ve gladly served as the ‘Rick’ guy for him to point frustrations today.

Are many asking about Adelson? WSJ article was odd at best.

Excellent Analysis. We must find a candidate that can beat Obama and Romney will not deliver. Newt’s big brain is Great but I’ll take Rick Santorums passion and deeply held convictions.

      Great addition to RedState!

prejudices about each candidates’ supporters and a bunch of confirmation bias. Have you really asked all Romney supporters what they like to do on weekends and kept statistics?! Let’s just say, if Romney’s base were engineers and accountants afraid of their own shadow, and Santorum’s “Reagan people”, the polls would be 80% Santorum to 5% Romney right now.

        • cbartlett

and we are both extremely analytical. AND most definitely NOT-Romney folks. Perhaps it’s because we are small business owners and not wealthy GOP intellectual elites? Neither of us see Romney as a “brilliant business man”. His “brilliant business mind” is tainted by the fact that he has always had access to money. Being brilliant in business is always a lot easier when you have other people’s money to play with and don’t have to start at the bottom to get it. The most logical (yes we are that!) choice in this group is Newt. He has the years of historical perspective and experience to see the big picture of where this country needs to go and he is not afraid of bucking the system to do what needs to be done. He doesn’t care if he’s not liked. I think Romney and Santorum are both party-line guys that really want to be liked and will do what is expected of them – the conservative version of progressivism marches onward.

Andystone, was this a serious question: “Have you really asked all Romney supporters what they like to do on the weekends and kept statistics?!”

      I must be an Aberration…

I work for a church and most of my friends (who don’t follow politics as closely as I do) have this mentality towards the argument-

“Rick didn’t cheat on his wife and hasn’t been divorced so he MUST be the better (more conservative) choice.”

However, each of my close friends that I have been willing to go through the mind numbing exercise of comparing the candidates and their positions have eventually come out of it with a sense of “Wow… I didn’t know that about Newt.” Some have even been shocked that Santorum was Catholic. They thought for sure he was protestant.

For some reason people see this as Social Conservative (Rick) vs. Fiscal Conservative (Newt). I can see how some may have come to this conclusion. Newt keeps talking about all the ways he will fix the economy and Rick talks about all the social issues (or at least has become more famous for them.

Upon closer inspection, however… Rick and Newt would be a tie for me on their positions on the social side of politics (Israel, abortion, church freedoms, etc…). The only hiccup would be Newt’s past infidelities. I personally maintain that those events did not affect how he governed in the past or will in the future.

On Fiscal issues I think we can all agree Newt has a better history and bigger and better plans to fix our current problems.

So there you have it. Advantage Newt. For me, at least.

No need to waste keystrokes on Ron Paul. And Mitt… Well lets just say you probably wouldn’t be here if you supported Mitt. ;)

perspective and it is a perfect description of me, a Santorum supporter. I am frustrated with the government over reach into my pocket and my faith. I want someone who understands that and is passionate about fixing it. Santorum’s passion is moving.I can believe he will fight for me, because I can see he feels the same. Romney is the robot-politician, that doesnt care about anything but getting elected, will only take a stand if the poll says it is wise, and then will flip when the polls change. I get creeped out by that slick style. I love Newt and enjoy the idea of him on the debate floor with Obama, but like mentioned, I realize it would not be enough to get elected. I do not hold his personal past against him, but I am not sold by his wishy-washy economic plan. Plus, Gingrich has taken to pandering lately in ways that make me think he is returning to the politician model, not the revolutionary reformer model I am seeking. The moon base in FL, the mentioning of VP in every state, now Perry. It comes off as cheesy. Santorum has a solid plan, believes as I do, has passion and integrity (without being overbearing or a theocrat, he can make compromise when it leads to the greater good) and is likeable. I voted for him, as did my mother and daughter, so no gender gap in our family (hubby & father also voted for him). I think he would be best candidate by far. I guess I fit that Santorum caller to a tee!

I’m someone that likes to analyze things, yet I support Newt.

Yeah I want to see the debate of the century, but I want someone with ideas.

Newt’s baggage is the hardest for Obama to take potshots at, but Gingrich would have an extremely easy time going after Obama’s baggage.

Santorum and Obama have clear shots at each other’s baggage.

Romney’s baggage interferes with him attacking Obama’s baggage effectively, but Obama has a clear line of attack on Romney’s baggage.

So Newt is a stronger candidate even if you play it safe, what works as attacks in the primary won’t necessarily work in the general.

          • http://mark.wbap.com/ Producer Susan Cloud

… appreciate your thoughts, and were I not supporting Rick, Newt would be my guy. Having said that, I’d appreciate it if he’d exit the race … tonight. :)

      • http://mark.wbap.com/ Producer Susan Cloud

. . . they mean little to me. He’s repented and asked for forgiveness. I figure that if the God of the universe can cast Newt’s transgressions into the depths of the sea, the last thing I need to do is go bringing them up.

        But still, advantage Rick. :)

        • garfieldjl

The man made mistakes in his personal life, so what?

I want this country fixed, not nominate someone for husband of the year award.

I only get to hear Mr. Davis when he fills in for Rush, but he sounds like a fun person to work for. I envy you!

    Great post. Please continue.

I’m one of those engineering/techie types, but I don’t confuse having deep pockets with success …

I also think Gingrich’s best bet is to run on his record in Congress and as speaker, not on the promise of crushing Obama in the debates. As much fun as the crushing would be, it would also have no real meaning… A debate win can sway the middle and Conservatives (Reagan vs. Carter) but not Liberals (again, Reagan vs. Carter)…

All that said, this seems more a confirmation of my analysis…

Romney supporters think he can win, haven’t really looked at him, and are very resistant to looking too closely at anything that indicates otherwise.

Santorum supporters want the guy with the most integrity, confusing this with “will be most effective” or “will be most like Reagan”…. politely ignoring Reagan’s somewhat messy personal life.

Gingrich supporters are looking for a leader who can bring some heat to the race, although tending to focus too much on the debates. (Obama will not agree to Lincoln-Douglas style debates)

Ron Paul supporters are barking mad.

Newt doesn’t want to be associated with the disaster area caused in the last few years.

Santorum can be associated with it, but Newt left Congress far enough back that he can truthfully say he isn’t responsible for the mess.

    • http://mark.wbap.com/ Producer Susan Cloud

. . . I think I rather fancy “acat.” :) Thanks for reading and for sharing your thoughts.

Completely agree that Newt needs to run more on his congressional record. What bragging rights he has earned! I don’t understand why we don’t hear more of that from him. I guess because his brain is so big, he doesn’t know how to execute concise points for the electorate to digest.

Not the most disciplined fella in the pack . . . and this is one of my concerns for him as POTUS.

      • Melody Warbington (rwm52)

at the speech Newt gave last night at the AL GOP forum wherein he talks not only about his record, but also what he has done for the Republican Party. He was GOP when GOP wasn’t cool. Santorum’s speech is first. Newt’s starts around the 50 minute mark. If you don’t have time for the entire thing, listen to the last few minutes, starting around the 1 hour 19 minute mark.

        AL Forum

        • http://mark.wbap.com/ Producer Susan Cloud

          I’ll check it out.

Trust me, I love Newt for all that he is (and all he has been), but I just don’t know if that translates into presidential material.

          Appreciate you forwarding the link!

      • http://www.gmsplace.com/ civil truth

And your emphasis on the positive. I think that all thoughtful conservatives find themselves having to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of each of the candidates, and these weights differ for each person – and what resonates most with the heart also differs.

And given the stakes in this election and the need to evict Obama from office makes the decision process very intense because we know the dire consequences if we get this wrong.

I will be most willing to support either Rick or Newt – although at the moment the advantage goes to Newt for me. But the issues of faith that Rick has been able to raise thus far is an important counterbalance to the growing usurption by the state under the Democratic leadership promoting its claims of ultimate authority and expelling dissent from the public square.
