'Holiday' came from 'holy day'. Obviously Christmas is holy/sacred to Christianity and celebrated as the birth of Christ (actually the day was a pagan winter solstice festival that was co-opted by the Christians to celebrate Christ's birth).

Now if Chafee was calling it a Winter Solstice or Winter Festival Tree I could see a problem. And Chafee does have a point with calling his citizens to practical social action.

The whole thing strikes me as a non-issue.
