Haven’t You Been Paying Attention? No One is Paying Attention

We, the policially involved class, think that we are enganged in some great debate and that Obama’s actions are well known. They are not. Ask Americans if they know about Solyndra, Boeing’s move to S.C., ObamaCare budget error, the actions of the National Labor Relations Board, the EPA’s disasterous proposal that would immediately close 30% of coal power plants, the stopping of new permits for offshore drilling, the FCCs decision to regulate speech, or the courts forcing redistricting that helps Democrats under the guise of minority representation.

And while you may find a few who recognize that there has been some debate on these issues, how many understand what is really at stake? Even fewer. How are Americans to make a decision in next year’s election if they do not know the issues? Will the press educate them? Sure, they will and we know they will do it with the same “unbiased” approach they have always done.

For these reasons it has always been important that the Republican presidential candidate be able to speak directly and effectively to the American people. In looking for a candidate, Republicans must find someone who can speak with conviction and be able to explain what has been happening the last years under Obama.

The candidate must be someone who is credible in their beliefs. Sorry Romney. You’ve held too many opposing views—you’re out.

The candidate must have the minimum knowledge of the issues. Sorry Cain, come on, nothing about Libya?? Don’t know what defined benefit means???—you’re out.

The candidate must know what is important to voters Sorry Bachman, you’re relentless focus on Perry’s HPV in debates when people want to know about the economy was foolish and why you collapsed– you’re out.

The candidate must be trused on national defense. Sorry Paul, but you seem to blame America first and not recognize the threats in the real world. Santorum, I’m concerned. We should trust Pakistan because we “have to”??

That leaves Gingrich, and Perry. Who can most effectively communicate the conservative message in a way people can understand. I believe people can relate to Perry so this is an advantage over Gingrich, but Gingrich is a great story teller. When the media ignores what is happening in the world that contradicts their leftist views, we need someone who can inform in a persuasive manner. Both men are up to the job, but right now to most Americans think Perry does not look like he is up to the job. If Perry wants to win, he will have to quickly convince Republicans that he is up to the job and that he can be persuasive in telling the story of Obama’s failings. Otherwise, the nomination should be to Gingrich.

If you view the conservative, moderate and liberal media, he is definitely second tier. I think if you are anti-Romney, then you either support Gingrich or go home. Although you don’t want to admit it, Perry has mortally wounded his campaign, so much so that elected officials on the state level in Texas are moving away from some of his positions on immigration and education. A few months ago no one in Texas would have dared be publicly against anything Perry stood for (privately was another matter).

Perry has never been as popular or beloved as Bush 43 was and it is interesting to me that very few GOP influencers in Texas or anywhere else are coming out publicly to stand for him. That is in stark contrast to Bush 43 where it seemed like everyone who was anyone defended him. It makes you wonder about how many enemies Perry has. You need friends in politics and he has too few.

Perry is so unpopular that he has been elected three times to be Governor of Texas. Yeah and elected officials are moving away from some of his positions on immigration and education …what position would that be? In-state-tuition for illegals which most of the legislature voted for something like 173 -4. What are you talking about??

  • changeforrickperry

Why does the LSM still devote an ungodly amount of time trying to bash him, figure him out, follow his campaign, etc.??? He is working hard beneath the media’s radar right mow and his campaign is alive and well. His debate gaffe didn’t affect his standing with voters; if anything, folks could relate to him even more. Gingrich will not last. He and old Willard will go the way of Giuliani and Fred Thompson–one of whom was the supposed “frontrunner” for months, the other of whom was the worst campaigner ever in spite of his positions. Perry is not lazy and he is a terrific campaigner–and right now he’s under the radar just enough to get things rolling slowly but surely.

Oh, and about Texas pols distancing themselves…if you’re taking about David Dewhurst then whoop-dee-doo. He’s a RINO if ever there was one; thankfully he’s running for Senate and hopefully won’t become governor when President Perry is inaugurated.

Cheer up: Today, The New York Times has a page 1 fair-enough profile of Rick Perry’s Air Force service that changes the subject for him, until the next debate on Dec. 10.

In he meantime, Gingrich and Cain and Romney will be using the media oxygen.
    chewing on Gingrich.
delicately watching Cain’s slow decline in the polls
(Haley Barbour is holding a FL fundraiser for Cain this weekend – what does THAT tell you?)

At RealClearPolitics today, there is a long post about the rules of the nominating process, and why delegates are not necessarily bound by the vote.

Just keep your eye on Iowa… this really IS a marathon.
and try posting comments at The Texas Tribune in support of Rick Perry, because the NYT uses the TT for in-depth coverage.

  • Common_Cents

I agree that most are not paying attention, nor do they in the general much more than slogans and first impressions made by repeated 30 sec sound bytes, headlines etc…

Evidence exhibit #1 Hope and change.

Only core conservatives ever really bother to look at anyone’s record. The rest do not pay much attention until very very late in the race.

Sadly, reality is you better be incredibly media savvy or have the media as your propaganda team to cover for you like they did for obama.

  • gracie

    Hoping Cruz beats Dewhurst.
Does that leave Dewhurst stepping up antomatically into the Governor’s slot if Perry should win? Yikes!

Greg Abbott and Dan Patrick are great guys. Any ideas your way to keep Dewhurst out of the Governor’s office?

  • lizzie

what he has done on immigration helps Perry get that second look..

and my point about commenting at The Texas Tribune is because The New York Times continues to be ground zero for much of the media echo outside Rupert Murdoch’s empire,

There are now two forces at work: NOT-Romney and NOT-Paul.
    It is complicated

And just reading on another thread that Jindal is your Gov. I don’t keep up enough to be posting here since my husband is ill. I should stick to reading.

Well you do have an exceptional Guv! I have loved him for years and since the day I read his Wiki and saw the amazing amount of experience he has had in his young life, have always wanted him for POTUS. I do wonder if people realize he has more experience that the other young guns.

When I saw your initial question I was thinking, “Hmm, I don’t know THAT much about Texas politics…am I such a Perry fan that folks think I’m from Texas? Oh my, that’s too funny.” Although pttx333 declared me an Honorary Texan I’m not quite to the point of fully elaborating on much beyond Governor and Lieutenant Governor–right now. Give me a few more months ;)

I love my governor, too :) :) and I’d love to see him run for President…after he finishes this term. He has done so much for this state, not to mention Louisiana’s reputation. Back when Gustav blew through I’d sit in the rocker with a baby sister on my lap, winding the crank radio so we could hear Governor Jindal’s very informative updates. He proved his leadership then and again after the oil spill. I’d support him heartily in 2020 (because Perry will win a second term in 2016, y’know!).

  • gracie

as soon as Perry is nominated! You certainly have Dewhurst’s number. Lord would hate to be stuck with him….Love love love your Perry enthusiasm. :)

Later you can loan Jindal to the country. If he can fix LA he can fix anything. No offense! I have never seen anything like his preparedness plan for hurricanes. His mind IS a steel trap. Of course I love his endorsement of our Guv. Last week Jim DeMint’s office called me for a donation to his very excellent PAC for conservatives but I told them I would have to have a Perry endorsemet first!!

Gotta say I am ready for Perry’s numbers to start going NORTH. Thaks for all you do in keeping the faith!

  • changeforrickperry

We have often rolled our eyes and said, “Ugh, only in Louisiana…” I’m sure that you known as a Texan how important it is to be prepared for a hurricane. Our state was woefully unprepared for Katrina–it was only by the grace of God and the kindness of many other governors (thank you Rick Perry!!!) that we were able to rebound, and still New Orleans and the surrounding parishes are nothing like they once were. Now contrast that with the way things were handled during Gustav under Bobby Jindal. The chaos wasn’t nearly so overwhelming, things were orderly–and best of all, he didn’t have any emotional outbursts like our former (lady) governor!

Yes, we can loan him to the country after this last term. I must confess, I’m watching your governor carefully: I don’t want him to steal Jindal away for VP! Alas, duty may yet call, and we must all make sacrifices some time or other.

Good for you with DeMint! That’s what needs to be happening, that kind of communication with those higher up.

Hope your husband feels better soon!

  • gracie

    BUT if his country calls….;)

Do you live right in New Orleans? Did Katrina get you and yours? We used to come over to shop N O and Baton Rouge when we were antiques dealers; wonderful state and food to die for.

But I will never forget as long as I live how Kathleen Blanco turned Bush down right before the hurricane came for help from the Feds and then all —- broke loose and you poor folks were at the mercy of the storm with the pitiful help from your lady Guv and Ray Nagen. Things just did not have to get as bad as they did! The rest of us were watching in horror and Bush got blamed. And Nagen re-elected!!

Glad you found RedState! I guess we are not supposed to use it as our personal email but hey it’s a holiday. Back to politics…I am non-plussed that this primary is being decided by debates with three miute gotcha questions! CNN was better than the rest; Fox is a heartbreaker. Hopefully Cain is out? and Newt scares the youknowwhat out of me…his ego, climate change views and 1.6 from Fannie Mae?

Yikes, why does the rest of the US not realize that Perry is the only conservative nominee with core beliefs!? Enough rambling; I am not saying anything new. and thanks.

  • changeforrickperry

Without giving too many details, I’ll just say that I live not far from the Baton Rouge area. I grew up in Baton Rouge proper, though. We moved into our little rural town about six months after Katrina; we were in the process of selling our house when the hurricane hit, and it complicated matters A LOT because Blanco wouldn’t allow any contracts to be broken/signed for a period after the hurricane. We were glad to get out of Baton Rouge when we did; the fallout of Katrina changed it drastically, as well.

I was so ashamed of Kathleen Blanco. I was so ashamed of the incompetence running riot. Jindal’s election, I truly believe, was the plain and simple result of our complete disgust with the Democratic Party after Katrina. And like I said, his response to Gustav only solidified the respect we already had for him. And then with the oil spill…wow, he was wonderful, even though Obama and Rahm Emanuel bullied him. Obama can’t stand decisive men AT ALL–which is why Perry would do great in a debate with him!

I think Cain is out, gracie, to be honest. And I don’t think Newt will last. The media’s giving him his moment in the sunshine and then they’ll pounce on him like a thousand rabid dogs. Meanwhile, Perry is working quietly beneath the radar. Sherrif Arpaio of Arizona is going to be campaigning for him in NH, did you hear? That will do WONDERS for his immigration positions; people will be thinking, Hey, if Arpaio is endorsing him, well then, he must really be as tough on the border as he says! It’s all very exciting. The media won’t know what hit ‘em when he starts winning states.

  • gracie

This is very excellent news. I love the way Perry is not giving up. I just worry that Newt will not get his true vetting since the holidays are upon us and/or people are not paying attention. When you look at how the polls have rolled it seems like the winner may just be the last man who happens to be standing! Ugh. Then they will tear him (Newt) limb from limb in the general.

How I hope you are right! and no I am not giving up. I got one of those”personal” emails from Anita Perry asking me to come to Iowa and help them on the ground. What I would give to go!!

For the life of me I don’t get how Obama has been able to stop drilling and not even take help in the clean-up…crippling the whole oil industry!), defy the courts, stop the pipeline, close grandfathered refineries in Texas, defy the court on Ocare…and just get away with it all. Who else would?? I did get an interesting article today re: how Ocare may fare at the S Court::

So…. looking back at the topic of this diary, haha, and all I can say is let’s pray that God will enable Rick Perry to be himself in the debates going forward. His speeches and ads are fine. Hey, they are great! He just needs to be himself. Send some prayers up!

enormously fond of any of our candidate. i’ve crossed some off my list entirely, Romney being the first, but I’ll vote for even him if I have to in order to hear those magic words: “Former President Obama”.
