MEMBER DIARY

I Cannot Be a Nixon Republican.

I am debating what to do if my Republican party becomes the progressive liberal party that it was under Ford and Nixon. I am a Reagan Republican. Nixon imposed price and WAGE controls to control inflation caused by his elimination of sound money. He did nothing to fight growth of government. He used the regulatory power of the FCC to keep opponents off the air. He used the IRS to punish opponents. He created more government agencies to regulate more of our lives at the federal level. He did not lower taxes and raised them.

Now the Republican party has again become home to a good number of people who want to return to the Nixon model of government.

Conservatives are the ones who have moved the nation in the right direction over the years. Reagan was right to believe that “Government is not the soluton to our problems, government is the problem”

Reagan ran on three objectives:

1) Strengthen our military
2) Cut taxes to spur incentive for entrepreneurs
3) Shrink the size of government.

Conservatives pushed the contract with America:

1.require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply to Congress;
2.select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud or abuse;
3.cut the number of House committees, and cut committee staff by one-third;
4.limit the terms of all committee chairs;
5.ban the casting of proxy votes in committee;
6.require committee meetings to be open to the public;
7.require a three-fifths majority vote to pass a tax increase;
8.guarantee an honest accounting of the Federal Budget by implementing zero base-line budgeting.

These ideas have strenght and principle behind them. They still have value.

Conservatives like Steve Forbes showed us that our tax code is a corrupting influence on government. That politicians manipulated the tax code to help certain groups, corporations, or rich individuals while hurting those who could not manipulate the system.

So why should I join in supporting Romney? when he: Opposed Reagan openly as recently as 1992, opposed the Contract with America, and spent $50,000 of his own money to oppose flat tax even though he was not even running for office!

Add to this, Romney’s creation of a government health program that has started to create the same type of problems in Massachucetts as seen in european health systems.

I grew up under Reagan. I know what Reagan stood for. I was proud of Reagan. Reagan was right to fight to change the Republican party within, I hope this can happen again. But already I have been forced to make my campaign donations directly to conservative candidates. I no longer trust the GOP to spend the money wisely.

I am a Reagan Republican and I refuse to go back to the Ford/Nixon progressive view.

    What exactly will be different under a Romney Administration?

    Will he appoint conservative judges? or Souter types?

    Will mandating the states provide health insurance in the way the Federal government describes be any different than a purely Federal mandate?

    Is reducing the corporate rate from 35% to europe’s rate of 25% really going to create a lot of jobs?

    What gov’t programs is Romney planning to eliminate or change to empower people?

    What programs did he eliminate in Mass.? Nothing. He created gov’t health program.

    Will he hold the line on taxes? I know Gingrich and Perry would. They have the record to show it. They stood up and said ‘NO’ Do you believe Romney will do the same? I don’t. I still remember GHW Bush’s betrayal of No New Taxes pledge.

    Having said all this, I will still vote for him just as I did Dole, GHW Bush, and McCain. But ordinary people did not show up to vote. Why? Because most people have lives to live and they won’t bother to vote if there is very little difference.

    I’m usually pretty quite, I haven’t posted on here before, though I’ve been coming to rs for more than a year. But I agree with you completely. If Republicans allow liberals to represent us, then there will no longer be a conservative voice, I would rather see this nation fall under a Democrat administration that admits it’s liberal, than under the leadership of liberal Republicans who aren’t willing to take the necessary steps to fix this country.

    I won’t do this anymore. Not this year at least. In 2008 I was a Huckabee supporter. Say what you will, he wasn’t the most conservative candidate,but he was the only one pushing the Fairtax, and that was enough for me then. When John McCain won, I donated money, waived signs, and tried to convince those I knew to vote for him. Election day came and I held my nose and pulled the lever. Look what happened.

    I won’t do it again. Not when things are as bad as they’ve gotten. We NEED a conservative. A TRUE, small government conservative. And with the candidates available? This country needs Rick Perry. So I will go to the polls here in Tampa, and I will vote for Rick Perry, and I will do my best to convince everyone I know to do the same. And if he doesn’t win, I’m not playing the game. I won’t help conservatives to be blamed for still more spending increases, and mounting debt. I will not follow the presidential race, and when election day rolls around I will go in and vote for every office EXCEPT President of the United States. I will not compromise. Not anymore. Perry or Bust 2012.

    You can’t do that!
    YOU owe the GOP YOUR vote!
    If YOU no longer vote for our policies that YOU do not believe in, ?YOU will take away our majority (at least in the House) and YOU will be handing the Democrats at least two more years of Congressional power and four more in the WH.

    YOU have always supported whatever (Left leaning) candidate we put up! ?Sure, you may have sent some TEA Party candidates to Washington last year, but we stifled their enthusiasm and vision – so they fell in line for the most part.

    If YOU reject Romney, YOU elect Obama, and he will drive this country to ruin much faster than we will!
    Didn’t YOU learn any lesson when YOU abandoned us in ’92 and voted for Perot? YOU elected Clinton for Pete’s sake!

    YOU TEA Partying Conservatives have some nerve, with your drive and supporters, trying to send us some kind of message in 2010 that YOU want us to move to the Right.
    WE run this Party, not YOU. WE select OUR candidates and YOU ?WILL vote for them – end of discussion. Oh, that goes for you Libertarians too!

    Obama will veto repeal of Obamacare. If we are lucky, in 2014, when the death panels start, Obama will kill RINOs like you first.

    I will be sorely disappointed if the one true small government conservative in the race, Governor Perry is not our choice. I was ready to caucus for him in my state, but I have already decided to still attend if he drops out before then.

    In Washington State, we have the opportunity to get rid of a horrid liberal senator, Maria Cantwell. I will be joining that battle and fighting for our candidate for president whoever it is. I will be getting to know the other true conservatives around me. I am learning to write on the internet, joining blogs like Red State where my voice can be heard. I am working on twitter to network with every conservative I can find.

    I am not giving up. Saying you refuse to support whoever we end up with is just giving up in my opinion. Romney has made lots of promises. If he doesn’t keep them, let’s primary him in 2016. Please be ready, Governor Perry!

    you don’t want to sit out Super Tuesday. This race is far from over, in fact the media this morning are shfting the narrative to Mitt doesn’t expect to win SC and the polls show Newt is 2 points behind or statistically tied. Plus there are 2 other decent candidates.

    Hell we need to be discussing Huntsman…..the most conservative candidate who now says global warming isn’t real. He’s rising in the polls and we have 48 states to go. This race won’t be over till one candidate has a clear lead of the 1245 delegates needed to win the nomination.

    Also, I don’t see to much in common with Nixon, Rombly is in a moderate progressive slash conservative class all his own. We may need a DNA test to prove he’s really human.

    The Nixon power elite in the GOP selected Romney for ‘grooming’ back in the EARLY 90s (how do you think he was chosen to head the SLC Olympics?) Some of us even remember his father: MI Gov Romney.
    This group has continued (yes, many of them are still alive) to ‘groom’ him ever since…… and voila! – you have your next nominee.
    This same group gave us Bush 41 and 43 (with Cheney).
    [the dems do the same thing - Clinton was groomed by Sr party members from his time as a Senate intern at age 21]
    I have as much problem with the big govt political elite behind Romney as I have with big govt Romney himself.
    These guys like their power, and they won’t give it up without a fight. Right now they are continuing to win that fight. – sigh -

  • geoph

    Obama will kill me first?
    You guys just don’t get it.
    We are over $15,000,000,000,000 in debt with no desire to stop that from growing. $1.2 trillion Added in 2011!

    Obama’s death panels will kill me first….oh, those must be the very same death panels Boehner has continued to fully fund CR after CR after CR!

    Starve the beast my foot! The beurocracy needed for that monster is already being created. Who’s going to legislate that away?
    If the SCOTUS decides to strike down the individual mandate, they won’t vacate the entire law. ?THAT opportunity passed when the GOP did not press the issue in 2011.

    Government controlled Health Care is here to stay because the government wants it, so if ObamaCare is your reason for voting Romney – THAT is a wasted vote!

    Obama’s death panels will kill me first….
    Obama or Romney…..
    Even if we have a candidate who will attack spending, I’m hoping the Nation makes it far enough to worry about “Death Panels”

  • geoph

    And you want to represent the GOP?

    How proud you must make your mother.
