With Victories Tonight, Santorum Has Made this a Two Man Race

Speaker Gingrich. You are an incredible leader. You are an incredible thinker. I have supported your campaign with words and with donations. I believe you would make a great President. We could talk about what should have happened. What would have happened if Romney had not thrown mud, mud and more mud at you and out spent everyone 5-1. I wish things had turned out differently. I was thinking what I would write if you managed to pull of wins in Al and MS tonight, but that did not happen.

Santorum has shown that he has appeal across the country and can even out perform you in southern states (TN, MS, AL) You needed to show that you could win outside of your home state. It did not happen. This has been a crazy race and may yet turn again. As your supporter, I wish I could think of a way you might pull this out, but that will not happen unless something strange happens yet again.

Therefore, I respectfully ask you to either: 1) postpone 2) Suspend 3) Delay your campaign. I know it is not fair. However Santorum deserves a shot at Romney one on one and he cannot do it without your support. Santorum will listen to your advice. He will listen to your ideas. He and you can make this country great again.

the american people have spoken. and it is a two man race

about half the states have voted. And nobody has a clear majority.

One third of the GOP voters in Alabama spoke for Newt.

Another advantage to both Newt and Santorum staying in the race is that it forces Romney to spend money on one or the other or both, making it even more difficult for him to be the inevitable nominee. That is a big plus for conservatives.

Why isn’t anybody calling for Paul to get out?

that nutjob is recycling the same failed foreign policy ideas that jimmy carter had

evenly, so how should that translate into a two man race?
Santorum, Gingrich and Romney each divided the votes by 1/3 in those primaries. I see no reason at all to call for anyone to drop out of the race because of this result.

The “South” was the region he was supposed to be able to win. It’s not like he is going to take the Midwest or Northeast right? So now that that isn’t the case he has NO PATH to victory.

Time to get out and back Rick.

But an interesting thing happened tonight.

The conservative vote was heavily divided, and Romney still got beaten.

This means Romney couldn’t even win in the South with the vote divided.

I think Newt should stay in and see if Santorum can handle Romney’s upcoming smear-a-thon.

If Santorum can handle it, I think Newt will leave. If Santorum can’t I think Newt is going to swoop in and deny Romney some wins.

So Santorum needs to show he isn’t going to crack under pressure, if he can manage that Newt’s probably getting out.

We shouldn’t have Newt bail until we see if Santorum can handle Romney in a presumed 1 on 1 match up.

Santorum also has a much better chance against Romney in the future winner-take-all-delegates states without Newt to siphon off conservative votes. Hopefully Newt must realize that it won’t ingratiate him with conservatives at the convention in Tampa.

Newt Gingrich should stay in the race. Gingrich won almost as much as Rick Santorum. Neither Romney or Santorum have the nomination” locked up”.
A brokered convetion might just be a good thing!

If he couldn’t win both AL and MISS which he didn’t! Santorum won at least 21 delegates, Newt at least 17, and Romney at least 16 with the rest yet to be decided. Suppose the tables were reversed for Newt and Santorum…and Newt got 21 delegates and Santorum 17. I am having a difficult time trying to reconcile how the difference of 4 delegates can result in Newt staying in the race or suspending his campaign.

The only conclusion that I can think of is the huge psychological advantage of being declared the winner of a primary as opposed to coming out second!

Santorum deserves his tremendous victories and his supporters here are rightfully proud of him.

As for me, I still believe that Newt is the best man for the job. However, I do not see a path to victory for him. As such, I will simply take a long break and vote for the Republican nominee in November. In retrospect, I believe that the Evangelical endorsement made all the difference for Santorum. This could turn out to be a huge mistake on the part of the Evangelical leaders. Back in 2008, the failure of the Evangelical leaders to endorse Huckabee allowed McCain to sneak through. It is possible that as a result of the 2008 debacle, Evangelicals decided that they had to endorse someone this time and that someone happened to be Santorum. I propose that had the group of 150 Evangelical leaders stayed above the fray and let Newt, Santorum, and Romney duke it out, Newt would be in a much stronger position today!

Historically, Evangelicals are not noted for their political acumen and 2012 may have done nothing to remove that dubious reputation. This may sound like I am bashing those Evangelical leaders. Maybe a little! But I will be the first to cheer them on if they had chosen to endorse Newt instead. So this last paragraph is just the ranting of a very dissappointed Newt supporter!

PPP surveyed 656 likely Republican voters in Mississippi and 600 likely Republican
primary voters in Alabama on March 10th and 11th. The margin of error for the
Mississippi poll is +/-3.8% and for the Alabama poll it?s +/-4.0%.

    Alabama

Q11 If the Republican candidates were just Ron
Paul, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum, who
    would you vote for?
    Ron Paul ………………………………………………… 12%
    Mitt Romney……………………………………………. 40%
    Rick Santorum………………………………………… 43%
    Not sure …………………………………………………. 6%

I couldn’t find the Mississippi results. Obviously, these polls were totally backwards, but it makes sense because half of Newt’s votes would be fiscal conservatives…..just guessing at that part, but it sounds about right.

  • lynnotting

This party does not want a fiscal government because with the candidates they have chosen, it is very likely Obama will get another term. Regardless, neither of them has what it takes to put this messed up government in order, especially with the plans they have proposed or lack there of. Also, they won’t have the advantage of Newt’s ideas and ablitly to put Obama on the defense though… It will be fun watching them go on the defense with this administrationwithout Newt’s help. Heck, walk away Newt. This party lost it’s integrity when they backed someone that has never done anything for conservatism over someone who has spent more than 30 years doing nothing but advancing the principles of conservatism. Then, they did nothing to defend you when he attempted to discredit all of your achievements. You deserve to be mad…on second thought, maybe you should just stay in….

Santorum and Gingrich just need to decide whom sits out of what state in the winner take all states.

Gingrich takes support from Romney and from Santorum.

Santorum’s supporters would largely back Gingrich.

What I suggest is that we decide on a Gingrich/Santorum or Santorum/Gingrich ticket and then come up with a way to decide who is on top of the ticket.
