I figured it would be a good idea to collect a list of the numbers from each of the Tea Parties, nationwide. Or, at least as many as we can get.
Update: Totals also displayed here:
366,535 people counted at 194 Tax Day Tea Parties, thus far.
Update: If you know where to get collections of entire States (not national numbers, States), like Jonah Shumate provided here then please do so. We seem to still be missing some states entirely and others are obviously under-represented here.
Missing States:
Connecticut
Delaware
Hawaii
Nebraska
North Dakota
New Mexico
South Carolina
South Dakota
West Virginia
Under-represented states:
Wyoming
Utah
Pennsylvania
Nevada
Montana
Mississippi
Missouri
Kentucky
Kansas

As you get the numbers for your local Tea Party or as you get revisions to any of the numbers above, please post them here.

Appleton, WI
techsan Wednesday, April 15th at 9:31PM EDT (link)1,500 is the best estimate I can make out. Not bad for a town of 90k. I reviewed some video I took of it. I’ll keep my eye out for any other counts. Lots of families there with their kids. We were blessed with one of the nicest evenings of the year. Good messages by the speakers…a local American History teacher gave the most rousing speech. The messages were consistent….Americans of all stripes are getting ripped off by the politicians in D.C. and Madison.
In the end, all we have on our side of the debate are facts and history.
Mind me begging you for a Recco?
Raven Wednesday, April 15th at 9:38PM EDT (link)I was hoping we could get this somewhere that people would get to see the numbers.

techsan Thursday, April 16th at 7:31AM EDT (link)The most the local newspaper (article here) was willing to concede was “hundreds”. There are some pictures there. I’m still comfortable with my original estimate; this picture on the article is about half the crowd. I’ll keep looking for more numbers.
In the end, all we have on our side of the debate are facts and history.

techsan Thursday, April 16th at 5:30PM EDT (link)Some pics here. Another tweeter here.. Some opinions on counts here. Generally, the 1,500 is still good for me…seems to be middle of the road.
As an aside….there is some great dialog in many blogs. I see some real defense of American ideals when the liberal kiddies show up and throw out the goofy, pie-in-the-sky, up-is-down claims. Check out link to the newspaper article in my post below…some great dialog defending freedom. This is not dying on 4/15.
In the end, all we have on our side of the debate are facts and history.
What do we say when?
its_a_right_wing_thing Thursday, April 16th at 8:39PM EDT (link)1. Where were you when Bush was spending trillions on Iraq?
2. 309,000 NATIONWIDE out of 300,000,000 isn’t that big of a deal.
I am an example of that. I was at work and couldn’t get off but I’d have been there. Does that make me any less Patriotic? I was hoping for a million.
So the biggest Tea Party was 16,000 @ the Alamo? Again, that’s not that impressive and I’m a conservative wishing and hoping to spin the numbers!
We supported the money spent on Iraq
Raven Friday, April 17th at 12:03PM EDT (link)We believed and still believe in that mission.
And the number is still climbing as for how many turned out on Wed.
Sure, lots of folks couldn’t make it because of work. That’s the risk that’s run having rallies at that time of day and not paying people to attend.
“Unlike cruel liberty that requires you to stand and take responsibility for your choices, kind tyranny requires only that you kneel and surrender your choices.”
Also keep in mind....
jazzycmk Friday, April 17th at 8:27PM EDT (link)… this event was during the middle of the week for an event not related to a Presidential campaign (or any campaign for that matter). Highly unusual for people to turn out in these sort of numbers for a non-election event.
Also, in many parts of the country the weather was not cooperative. In my town of Columbus, OH it was very cold and damp but people still turned out in the thousands (it’s been listed at 3,500 above, but I’ve seen it as high as 7,000). Organizers were only expecting about 1,500 - 2,000.
July 4th parties will blow these away.

how can't peeps in CA/NY not be upset?!?!?
JLenardDetroit Saturday, April 18th at 5:34PM EDT (link)Especially any GOP in CA with Arnold proving to be nothing more than a RINO… He should have shutdown the Government in order to force more cuts and less Tax increases. In NY State, of course, it is all on the JackAss Party!

well...sure..360k+ doesn't even compare to international war protests
techsan Saturday, April 18th at 3:17PM EDT (link)Ha! It’s 2006…MSNBC reports on an international war protest…..”Across the globe, demonstrators demand U.S. withdraw its troops”….”About 200 war veterans, hurricane survivors and demonstrators gathered Sunday at the Chalmette National Cemetery”….”Anti-war rallies in Japan drew about 800 protesters chanting “No war! Stop the war!” and banging drums as they marched peacefully through downtown Tokyo toward the U.S. Embassy. A day earlier, about 2,000 rallied in the city.” Also, “Protesters also gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Malaysia, and at least 1,000 people turned out in Seoul, South Korea, which has the third-largest contingent of foreign troops in Iraq after the U.S. and Britain.”
360k sounds like a number worth reporting to me.

Charlottesville VA
johnCV Wednesday, April 15th at 9:52PM EDT (link)Local media calls it over 3000 - I’d say that’s about right. City of 45k county of 100k. Waaaay more than most ever guessed would show up. This is a very liberal town (university town and sliding more so as NE types continue to migrate here). People were excited at the numbers and we had some good speakers. Many references to Jefferson and how he would have perceived our current situation (as this was his home). The local Libertarian party leader gave the best speech of the day - a real stemwinder. In general, people are getting pretty pissed off at this situation.
All in all a great day - I hope Jefferson would be pleased.

red4ever Wednesday, April 15th at 10:00PM EDT (link)Despite all the naysayers and problems and lack of experience and opposition, we did it. We got national attention (even misguided is better than being ignored). We got HUGE numbers. I am literally in [happy] tears over how well this day has gone.
Can we have a total of the numbers at the bottom of hte list for those of us who are slow with numbers. Thank you.

righthook Wednesday, April 15th at 10:11PM EDT (link)suburb of Portland. It was awesome! Lots of parents with kids, grandparents, Veterans….glad I went.
I'll hijack this as the Oregon thread
JoeG Wednesday, April 15th at 11:57PM EDT (link)I was at the capital. The estimates I’ve heard are “a few hundred” on KPTV. Nope, no way, there were far more than that. The state police said 1000+. The Oregonian says 3000. You couldn’t fit any more people on the capital side of the street so I think the 2000+ is reasonable.
I also went to the Corvallis party. It was at least 200. For a lefty laden college town, that’s pretty good. I was very happy with the number folks driving by who were very supported.
The fun part was when the anti-war folks showed up. Corvallis has a die hard core of anti-war protesters who have been at the courthouse from 5PM to 6PM every weekday since we invaded Afghanistan. Yep, 8 years of running where at least one protester waved signs for an hour. We started at 4:30 and by the time 5:00 rolled around, there was no room for them. They ended up across the street shoehorned in with all the other signs.
Cite your number origins, pls

Morristown, New Jersey, say 1,500.
Chemical Sam Wednesday, April 15th at 10:14PM EDT (link)Early on in the TEA party I made a point to count out and mentally group about100 people to see how much area that group took up. I could easily make 10 groups out just from one vantage point, and there could have been 20. Call it1,500 for Morristown.
People well milling about everywhere. Just in the line to sign a “declaration of grievances” there could have been 50 people, and that line never dissipated in the three hours people were there.
Get in contact with the organizers for Morristown, through Meetup.com or maybe http://taxdayteaparty.com/teaparty/new-jersey/
They may be able to give a minimum head count by petition signatures!

Chemical Sam Wednesday, April 15th at 10:17PM EDT (link)we had FREEZING RAIN for the first hour of the tea party (so much for global warming). Nobody seemed to care that it was miserable out. I can’t say that weather kept anyone but the least interested away.

I still say there were more. Hang on to 1,500. Not a bad eye!

Nice trick huh? Sorry I saw the 1000 number and thought what will the press do in reporting that number. Of course the same will go for a 10,000 it will be “upwards of a few thousand”

That's assuming they cover it...
Gigi Thursday, April 16th at 8:37AM EDT (link)I spent a few minutes this morning going to the MSM sites (GAH!). And you guessed it, there was NADA at the top of the pages. There were a couple of mentions here and there. One talking about how most people were happy that big government was back and another saying that Obama is talking about simplifying the tax code. Of course that is just because members of his administration (including the guy in charge of the IRS) can’t follow what is already in place, not because it isn’t fair.
While I am not surprised that real Americans making their voices heard were ignored by the elite media, it just solidified for me how useless they are. In Dayton, we are at least lucky enough to have a radio station that was a sponsor (Thanks, WHIO), so it got a lot of air time.
All in all, we have got to keep this going. The growl needs to become a roar. King George ignored the “Rebels” for a long while, too. Luckily, we now have the tool of the vote. Let’s work to ensure that is all it takes to bring our government in line with our wishes.

news spin is 200 attendees
LJ "Beaglescout" Miller Thursday, April 16th at 12:08PM EDT (link)When I was walking into the area about 15 minutes before it started I estimated 200-300 already. There were at least double that at the height of the rally. I walked around with a video cam but haven’t managed to upload and edit it yet.

kowalski myself
LJ "Beaglescout" Miller Thursday, April 16th at 12:13PM EDT (link)I misspoke. The rally filled up a pretty big parking lot. There were 300 or more in place while I was walking in and others milling around. While the first couple of people were speaking, and before a very nice lady who droned on and on lost a lot of the audience, the crowd was peaking. I was sitting down so I couldn’t see. But I’ve been in crowds of 100 or 200 on up to crowds of thousands. This crowd sounded like and looked like a crowd of about a 1000. But as far as I know nobody was tallying attendees.
That’s what happens with real grass-roots things. They aren’t organized.

Cocoa, FL (Ramada Inn, 5pm) “more than 200″
I attended the Melbourne event (blogged here.
I think the Palm Bay event was poorly conceived: Palm Bay is a huge sprawling town, and its City Hall is “way out there”. It’s not a short trip from the major business areas — and the event was held AFTER most folks’ lunch break was over.

cwilson Thursday, April 16th at 2:32AM EDT (link)Raven, you’ve got Melbourne listed twice. U.S. Census Bureau currently estimates the US population at 306,225,826. I want to use this figure rather than the 2000 official census figure. Since the Census Bureau has not been politicized quite yet, their figures are trustworthy (I had to work with them for my job once). (http://www.census.gov/)

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.
Dante
I'm going off an extrapolation
Raven Thursday, April 16th at 2:01AM EDT (link)Rush said 500 parties that he knows about. Others, including Hannity, have said as many as 1,500 parties.
Well, with well over 150,000 participants in the first 50 parties listed, I just took the 150,000 times 10 to get 500 parties. 1.5 million. That’s .5% of the total US population.
With the 1500 from Hannity, I’m making a not so WAG of 4.5 million people for 1.5% tot US population.
Now you know how I got my guesstimate.
Actual number will likely be closer to the Rush guess than the Hannity guess. But I want to be an optimist. So I am putting my money on the higher numbers.
“Unlike cruel liberty that requires you to stand and take responsibility for your choices, kind tyranny requires only that you kneel and surrender your choices.”
Probably too high
Hooah_Mac Thursday, April 16th at 2:06AM EDT (link)In that most of the numbers yet to be tabulated will likely be smaller, with many of the bigger events already accounted for, but I would not be surprised at seeing an actual total around 1 million.

Flagstaff Monday, April 20th at 12:04AM EDT (link)The estimate of 5,000 seemed about right to me. The venue was not the best–couldn’t see or hear the speakers unless you were right in front of them. I suspect that a lot of people did what I did–showed up, walked around a while, took some pictures, then left early. So the total might have been bigger.
The day was cold for Phoenix–about 60 degrees and windy. And there were no national personalities to draw folks, either. I drove down from Flagstaff just to show support and be there.
To the folks on MSNBC: I challenge you to mobilize 500,000 to 1,000,000 people to show up around the entire country in support of whatever agenda you pick. And you can’t give anything away to them for coming. And the events have to be scheduled before you announce you’ll televise ONLY six of them. You can’t set them up yourselves, first.

NH numbers
wayneinnh Thursday, April 16th at 7:40AM EDT (link)From what I have gathered this morning:
Concord NH - 600 (not bad for a noon rally consisting of working people)
Manchester NH - 1000 (probably not accurate since this was from a left leaning paper that showed up at 5 pm, a half hour before the rally started, i was there and would put the crowd at twice that)
Dover NH - 150 (population 28,775)
Rochester NH - 150 ( population 30,527)
Portsmouth NH - (population 20,495) From Foster’s Daily Democrat “200 people filled the street in front of the North Church in what Deputy Police Chief Len DiSesa said was the largest demonstration he has seen in the downtown during his 22 years with the police department. “

Elizabeth Thursday, April 16th at 8:40AM EDT (link)Official sheriff’s estimate of crowd size was 1600. This is consistent with what my husband and I observed.
News coverage in SoCal has been lousy. The LA Times and San Gabriel Valley Tribune both only mentioned the smaller rallies, completely ignoring those over a few hundred. I’ve got to believe the one in Van Nuys attracted more people than the one we attended, but I’ve seen no mention of it in any of the papers.
It sounds like there were a lot of smaller rallies in places like Glendale and Arcadia that I did not see listed on the main Tea Party page. Not sure how many others may have happened like that.

Louisiana parties: Local press yawns
Vladimir Thursday, April 16th at 9:27AM EDT (link)From the Baton Rouge Daily Advocate:
“Official crowd estimates here were not available. The Associated Press estimated a crowd of at least 1,000 at the State Capitol. Organizers claimed a turnout of at least 3,000. Protesters filled much of the south steps of the State Capitol and spilled into a nearby parking lot.”
Judging from the picture, 3,000 looks like the more credible estimate of the two. The Advocate is a liberal rag that downplays the event; note the headline: “Tea Party Gets Crowd”.
There were tea parties all over the state, but numbers are hard to come by. Rep. Steve Scalise attended parties in Metairie, Covington and Hammond. There were also tea parties in Lafayette, Alexandria, Winnfield and Shreveport.
The Lafayette paper reports “Dozens of people from across Acadiana” participated. It’s impossible to tell from the paper’s photo gallery which has a single crowd shot among dozens of closeups. They seem to be downplaying the numbers, too.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune is avoiding the subject altogether.

A note on numbers
Hooah_Mac Thursday, April 16th at 12:52PM EDT (link)Even as these numbers are as accurate as we can make them, even when they come from police organizations experienced at counting crowds, we will still end up likely under counting by a good amount.
At the St. Cloud MN event, people came late and left early because the event was held over the lunch hour.
I am guessing, but if there were 450 people there at a given time, that probably means 500-600 total people participated.
Not something to put in our numbers, but something for everyone to keep in mind when considering the totals.

There used to be a rule in business that said
Steph C Thursday, April 16th at 7:57PM EDT (link)if there is one who complains there are five others who feel the same way but instead of saying anything took their business elsewhere.
There was also the rule of 250 that stated that for every one person, that person knows 250 others. With the internet, that could be a lot different. Along those lines, it puts the FTC clamping down on Mommy sites in a whole new light (not related to the tea parties, just used as an example).
So, if we take the number of 311,000 that Raven counted and multiplied it by that five cited in the first rule, you’d get the number: 1, 555, 500.
Is that along the lines of what you wanted to know?

CincoSolas_del_Bronx Thursday, April 16th at 3:57PM EDT (link)Born and bred in Pittsford, just north of Rutland, the “city” that time forgot–except for the now-crippling escalation in drug addiction and gang mayhem. I joke with siblings still in Pittsford, who pre-Giuliani were loathe to visit us in the Bronx, that now I understand how they used to feel and that they are welcome to move in with us any time they want the peace and quiet!
On a positive note there seems to be, in pockets at least–Rutland and Barre come to mind–a growing return toward at least theological conservatism–the kind that, say Johnathan Edwards would have known, and which nearly disappeared between about 1750 and 1850; we hear reports of this not only in Vermont but also other parts of New England. As a Christian that thrills me; whether it also translates into political sanity is infinitely less important, but will be interesting to see if it develops as well!

DonPMitchell Friday, April 17th at 10:24AM EDT (link)3000 people in Washington DC is nothing. These demonstrations are relatively small. Is this just the religious right whining — “we’re not in power == fascism”? Now we see Burr calling on people to start a run on the banks. Or Bachmann in Minnesota giving one nutty performance after another.
When is a substantial conservative message going to emerge? It’s time for practical people and fiscal conservatives to take the Republican party back from the inept evangelical social conservatives who have embarassed the majority of American conservatives.

BTW a lot of the Tea Parties were organized by Campaign 4 Liberty…which is not a Christian organization at all…in fact one of their mantras is Fiscally Conservative but Socially Liberal…so you might want to ease back on the automatic assumption that the “religious right” is the driving force behind this.

To quote GC, more later. (WHEW). Again, these are just the ones who posted to the web site. I feel certain there are many small towns especially county seats that quickly popped up and didn’t get on the web at all.

Fallon Friday, April 17th at 6:34PM EDT (link)I have some great pictures of creative signs and the famous Pitchfork. I don’t know how to post them here or I would. Thanks for posting the list. I was going to post it, too. Rockford IL’s Tea Party was on April 14th with the press reporting a few hundred. Quincy IL’s was held on April 4th. The local television site said “hundreds” the local paper said very little. See QuincyTeaPartydotCom. They link to a Monmouth, IL site which says 100 people turned out on April 15th.
6 more IL parties. (Quincy weighs in at 1,000)

Quincy = “Had Hundreds” according to one news source on the web.
I didn’t believe it so I looked again and here is the cite for Quincy below.

Yeah, and I'd
redneck_hippie Friday, April 17th at 7:36PM EDT (link)be willing to bet there never has been nor ever will be a leftist pro-big-government, anti-freedom rally in Nauvoo, Illinois, either!
I’d really like to see a comprehensive list of every God-fearing, America-loving dot of a town on the map of the United States who gathered together and said, “We’re mad, and we’re gonna do something about it”

Counts...
redneck_hippie Friday, April 17th at 8:42PM EDT (link)We have 12,000 for Illinois. And they are based on official counts. PJ has 9,000 and they counted both Chicago and Lisle higher than here. Well, as a talk show host said at the Lisle rally, this could be a Guinness World Record.

Redding, CA, had three tea parties
jrnlz Saturday, April 18th at 2:40AM EDT (link)The local paper (Redding.com) put the count at the first at 140. People who were there said about 200 people attended that one. I attended the next two. The local paper gave no estimates for those. I saw no law enforcement, so I doubt they have estimates, either. I would guess the second at at least 300 (with estimates up to 500) and the third at 1500 to 2000 (with estimates up to 3000). The second party’s website puts the estimate of the third at 2500.
A poster above put the Redding count at 1500 (presumable for the third one) but didn’t cite a source. I can tell by the signs that many of the attendees were at two or three of the events.

montana tea parties
montanan Saturday, April 18th at 3:54PM EDT (link)well, Great Falls had close to 500 attendees, and I know for a fact that there were parties in Billings, Glasgow, Butte, Lewistown, Whitefish, and Kalispell with more events in several of the smaller farm hub communities across the state. I can’t give you numbers for attendance at those shindigs yet, but rest assured that Montana had a good turnout for a state with less than a million residents.
btw
montanan Saturday, April 18th at 4:00PM EDT (link)I should probably note that it was snowing during our protest, so that may have effected the turnout.
Although numbers are important,

Late numbers from Philadelphia's Love Park Tea Party
mecat212 Sunday, April 19th at 8:21PM EDT (link)Sorry for being so late to report numbers from the Philadelphia Tea Party on the 15th. I was there in the drenching rain. The only newspaper to report any numbers was the Philadelphia Bulletin that said there were 200 present and only about 20 posters. I don’t know when they took the count but we had about that number before the event even started! It was over tthe lunch hours of 12:00PM and 2:00PM. I can estimate about 500-600 stalwart attendees, over 70 posters and hundreds of flags being waved by “right wing radicals”. We had members of all political parties, races and generations. The rain could not dampen our enthusiasm nor spirits.
There was another Tea Party at Independence Hall, on Saturday, April 18th which drew about 1000/1200 and another at Washington’s Crossing Historical Park in Bucks County Pa. The Intelligencer newspaper only said there were hundreds at the protest but no actual number.
The problem with the 18th’s gathering was a simultaneous memorial service at Citizens Bank Baseball Stadium for former Philadelphia Phillies announcer Harry Kalas. This event drew around 9000 attendees. The Tea Party was planned months in advance but Harry Kalas died last week.
Hope this helps boost the numbers a little. Can’t wait for the July 4th events already in the early stages of preparation!

I tell you though the fact that ANYONE showed up says something about this movement…the weather was a BEAR. I am surprised that you were able to get your message out about the site being changed.
I am curious did the site change? there was a woman walking our crowd trying to see who was going to Reston to give them updated instructions as to where the Reston party was moved to.
