Ode to Cold Warrior: Redistricting of Ohio 14 means LaTourette can and should be defeated

Here’s a report from an Ohio paper:

“The district represented by Bainbridge Township Republican Rep. Steve LaTourette will pick up parts of Cuyahoga County he does not currently represent, including Brecksville, Independence, Lyndhurst and Mayfield Heights, as well as communities in Summit, Portage and Trumbull counties.”

What does this mean? LaTourette’s district is now solidly Republican and would elect a conservative nominee in a general election. For years, LaTourette has opposed conservative initiatives.

He voted for NPR funding.

He voted against a bill to repeal mandatory funding for school-based health center construction as appropriated in the Obamacare legislation.

He voted against an amendment to HR 2017 that would have prohibited the use of funds to implement collective bargaining by employees of the Transportation Security Administration.

In a bellweather district, perhaps one could make a case for LaTourette. But in a safe Republican district, we can do better.

Ohio 14 needs a conservative candidate. Here’s hoping for an Ohio 14 tea party!

You have to take into account the Ohio Mafia, otherwise known as the Ohio Republican Party. Their policy is to endorse early, endorse often. They will endorse LaTourette before the primary and send out boatloads of mailings letting everyone know that he is the “approved” Republican candidate.

They will also get Ohio Right to Life to endorse him exclusively, whether or not he is the most pro-life candidate in the race. (Their policy is to endorse the most pro-life candidate they think can win.)(Translation: the candidate with the most money.) A lot of voters don’t know this and will vote based on the ORTL endorsements.

This makes it virtually impossible for anyone not approved by “The Party” to have a fair shot at winning a primary unless they have a private fortune or they can put together a massive – really massive – grassroots campaign.

I’d love to see him go. I know people who live in that district who can’t stand him. But I also know the reality of the ORP. I have a friend who ran in the primary for an open seat last year in a neighboring district. The ORP would not even MEET with him,, even though he collected enough signatures and he paid the fee and ran a respectable campaign. The ORP ran a millionaire car dealer, a 50-something “Young Gun” who ran a terrible campaigne and lost by a wide margin. But “The Party” knows best.
