Give the woman a break?

In her latest column, news relic Helen Thomas begs New York Governor David Patterson to “Give Caroline a chance” to be a U.S. Senator.

The antediluvian columnist evidently wants Patterson to give the Kennedy heir more of a break than Thomas herself was willing to extend to Gov. Sarah Palin.

Can you say, “Typical liberal media hypocrite?” I knew you could!

For all those screaming for greater regulation and oversight…

…it’s always good to remember these things are not necessarily silver bullets.  To wit:  The current case of Whole Foods and the FTC.  Now obviously we need reform in the financial industry, but regulation for regulations sake is rarely a positive thing for the marketplace.

How Do We Know Hamas Is In Trouble?

Link.

Going on the offensive in the communications war

The IDF has launched it’s own youtube channel.  Good for them–the ability of Hezbollah to control the images of the war two years ago was a highly effective technique for them.  There’s no reason to allow Hamas to follow suit.

Matt Labash on Detroit

The marvelous Matt Labash has a lengthy profile of Detroit that’s both hilarious and heartbreaking. (H/T) On a macro level, conservatives tend to laugh at Detroit as being the Zimbabwe of American cities, a place where all of the worst pathologies of political, economic and cultural liberalism have been allowed to run wild for decades with predictably ghastly results, yet the city’s incompetent and kleptocratic political class is perpetually insulated from accountability by an impenetrable wall of race-mongering. The Reagan Revolution, the reformist governorship of John Engler, the Gingrich/Clinton welfare reforms, the economic booms of 1983-89, 1995-99, and 2003-06…all of these helped put temporary brakes on the downward spiral at times but none did anything to alter the fundamental dynamics that have kept the city stuck in a permanent reverse gear. Detroit’s residents, like Chicago’s, truly have the government they want and deserve.

And yet, as is often true of the truly wrecked places of the world, on an individual level the human tragedies of the place are still worthy of our pity even as they overwhelm even the most optimistic among us (Detroit is almost certainly too far gone to be revived by a Rudy Giuliani or Bobby Jindal type, not that any is on the horizon). Labash combines horrifying statistics with heart-rending anecdotes to bring home precisely how bad things have gotten, and to pay tribute to the Detroiters who still battle the blaze. It’s a must-read.

Algore is on the hot seat today

as at least three stories from the deniers realists hit the wires. Algore’s disciples are having conniptions, I’m sure.

Oh, wait - it’s just “weather” when it contradicts the Church Of The Global Warmists, isn’t it? But when the temps are hot, it’s end-of-the-world-inducing climate change.

As one who must travel during the winter, I would be quite happy to see some global warming to wipe out the snow and freezing rain.

Queue up Brother Skanderbeg’s Ojmjakon update…

And, to continue the Rick Warren thing…

I see that Feddie posted one this AM, and here’s another. Rich Lowry has a nice article in the NY Post that brings out the theme of the “culture war” and who’s waging it. Contrary to popular belief on the Left, it’s them and not us. But you knew that already, right?

The question:

The ensuing firestorm sheds light on two questions: Is there a real culture war in this country, deeper and more abiding than any one political party’s electoral strategy? And who is the aggressor in it? The answers, respectively, are “yes” and “the cultural left.”

In reference to the Left’s strategy:

As in so many other culture-war battles, the traditionalists were the ones in a fundamentally defensive posture. They defended an age-old definition of gay marriage, while the left sought - using its favorite tool, the courts - to run roughshod over majority sentiment.

Unfortunately, that “favorite tool” is now under control of The One and his flunkies in Congress.

Lowry finishes with a flourish:

In a story about Hollywood’s outrage at Obama’s choice of Warren, Democratic political consultant Chad Griffin told the Los Angeles Times: “Rick Warren needs to realize that he is further dividing us at a time when the country needs to come together. I think he needs to gracefully step aside.”

Ah, yes, “gracefully step aside.” That’s essentially what the cultural left has been asking traditionalists to do for 30 years now, to politely shut up while it goes about redefining the country’s mores. The answer must now be, as it has always been, “No way, no how.”

News flash, Chad - you guys are doing the “dividing”. We were fine before you came along.
