Supreme Court Justice Souter To Retire

NPR.org, April 30, 2009 · NPR has learned that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is planning to retire at the end of the court’s current term.

The court has completed hearing oral arguments for the year and will be issuing rulings and opinions until the end of June.

Souter is expected to remain on the bench until a successor has been chosen and confirmed, which may or may not be accomplished before the court reconvenes in October.

Assassination attempt in Holland.

(via HolyCoast) A premeditated act, but judging from the reports, probably not an Islamist*-inspired one.

5 Dead After Car Strikes Crowd at Dutch Royal Parade

Five people were killed and several others hurt in the Netherlands after a car rammed into a crowd of spectators in what police are calling a premeditated attack on the royal family.

The car appeared to be deliberately driving at high speed toward an open bus carrying the popular Queen Beatrix and her family in the western Dutch city of Apeldoorn.

[snip]

Prosecutors said the driver, badly injured and still in his crumpled car, acknowledged targeting the queen and her family.

My prayers for the victims and their families.

Good news/bad news on the [insert name here] Flu.

Good news: this strain of the flu apparently isn’t as bad as people were thinking.

Bad news: we’re probably going to have some hysteria over this anyway, given the recent White House advisory (and the fact that masks are the top three sellers on Amazon) (both via Drudge).

[UPDATE] Heh.  See here for more good news/bad news.

Re: Twisting the Knife.

I don’t think that I can describe the impact of that call without using porn industry terms.

NRSC Knows How to Twist the Knife

I’m waiting for confirmation, but I believe this is a robocall the NRSC is putting out to Democrat households in Pennsylvania. At least, that seems the logical target. If so, it’s brilliant:

Tell me again how no legitimate Democrat will want to run a primary against an opportunistic turncoat, who has opposed the ‘progressive’ agenda for years? (Well, that’s the way they’ll see it, anyway.)

Update: The NRSC confirms that this is their latest robocall to Pennsylvania Democrats. More here.

Will Reid be in the Senate to endorse the Specter deal?

Josh notes that Harry Reid may have a fight on his hands, with a number of Democratic Senators who disapprove of the deal with Specter.

I just hope that Reid isn’t in the Senate to enforce the deal.

Biden Foot-in-Mouth Report

On the Today Show this morning, Matt Lauer asked Joe Biden a hypothetical question regarding the Swine Flu outbreak: If one of your family members came to you and said they were planning a trip to Mexico right now, what advice would you give them?

Biden said he’d advise anyone against being in a confined space such as an airplane or subway with other people because they might, you know, sneeze. It’s one thing when someone sneezes in an open field, he said, but in a confined space…

Sorry for the paraphrase but I’ve gotta go to work. Maybe one of our intrepid sleuths can Google it on youtube and let us know if our government is advising its citizens against public transportation.

Thank G_d for the private automobile!

1/10th scale Saturn V rocket launched.

Very cool.

Rocket Record: The Largest, Heaviest Amateur Rocket Ever Launched

Steve Eves broke two world records Saturday, when his 1/10th scale model of the historic rocket—built in his garage near Akron, Ohio—lifted off from a field on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The 36-ft.-tall rocket was the largest amateur rocket ever launched and recovered successfully—and at 1648 pounds, also the heaviest. Eves’ single-stage behemoth was powered by nine motors—eight 13,000 Newton-second N-Class motors and a 77,000 Newton-second P-Class motor. (Five Newton-seconds is equivalent to about a pound of thrust.) All told, the array generated enough force to chuck a Volkswagen more than a half-mile—and sent the Saturn V more than 4440 feet straight up. It was arguably the most audacious display of raw power ever generated by an amateur rocket.

Frankly, I’m going to watch Underworld tonight, instead.

Why that, and not the ‘press conference?’

Because I haven’t actually seen the series, yet; it was cheap at the price that I got for it (cheaper than this, actually); and, honestly, it’s probably going to have a bit more believable fantasy narrative than what we have scheduled for this evening with regard to the press conference.

Besides, I’m merely doing what Fox is doing - and other networks wish that they could.
