Kevin Holtsberry’s The Right Reads is a site that you should be perusing, particularly if you are a conservative who is interested in books generally.
I could pad that sentence out more, but really: that’s the message.

Maybe Ed Morrissey is even more of a brazen optimist than I am. Having this President openly acknowledge that Gitmo serves a useful purpose and should be retained would be like having the Pope come out and declare ex cathedra that Hell was actually a pretty cool vacation spot, down to the likely reaction of certain members of the base.
Which is not to say that Gitmo is going to close. People just need to… forget that Gitmo was supposed to close, that’s all.

PS: I get the impression that the Uighurs are turning into one of those convenient complications for this administration.

I’ve only ever had one proper screaming argument with an animal rights activist. That was a great night. It was at a student party. She told me she believed animal lives to be worth just as much as human lives. I told her she was the most apathetically selfish person I’d ever met.
“Because if that place down the road was selling Kentucky Fried Person,” I explained, “I’d probably firebomb it. Not just sit here whingeing, with a spliff and a can of Skol.”
- Hugo Rifkind, via Tim Worstall*, who is an old-school British blogger who is currently running for the EU Parliament for the UKIP, which is a party dedicated to getting the UK out of the EU Parliament, and indeed the EU, entirely.
This is not actually ironic, although others might find it slightly rude.

No, Stacy. Sorry, but no. Ted Rall defines himself by what he hates; when he flips, he’s going to end up in some other internal head-space that’s just as tediously scary and banally ugly as the one that he was in for the last eight years. And when the next President takes office, he’ll hate that office holder, too; and so on, and so on, and so on. So let him rot where he is.
Besides, there’s the entire ‘draws like he’s using a Sharpie stuck in his armpit’ thing - which is actually kind of funny: I completely misremembered where James Lileks suggested Rall inserted his pen.
And, honestly, I like my version better.

I suppose this is meant to shut up conservatives who are concerned that ‘equal justice under the law’ will not apply under Obama’s nominee for a lifetime appointment to the highest court:
At the tail end of a more than hour-long press briefing White House press secretary made a stunning admission about the administration’s Supreme Court pick while discussing her controversial 2001 speech.
“I think she’d say that her word choice in 2001 was poor,” Gibbs said of Sonia Sotomayor’s argument that a “wise Latina woman” would reach better conclusions than white men. “She was simply making the point that personal experiences are relevant to the process of judgment, that your personal experiences have a tendency to make you more aware of certain facts in certain cases, that your experiences impact your understanding. I think we’d all agree with that.”
Here’s an idea. How about if the hack that made the comments explain them. Or apologize for them.
…and he proceeds to explain. In admirably frank detail, and with a cheerful lack of concern about showing any respect toward those people that, in Klavan’s clear opinion, have not really earned it. Personally, I think that Pajamas TV may be shooting itself in the foot by not making this stuff embeddable, but nobody asked me, now did they?

Or if you know a conservative with deep pockets, or work for one, or have something juicy on one and want to do the Right a favor - heck, just read What DealerGate Says About the Conservative ‘Message’ Problem. Worth your time.
Josh has already covered it here, but it deserves to be pointed out again.

My buddy The College Politico points out a Biden ad-lib that is certain to have Joe back to walking the dog when he returns to DC.
Taking shots at Obama for the teleprompter? Tsk tsk. Someone get Wanda Sykes to coach old Joe STAT!!
TPM plans to cast the conservatives as hypocrites…how original . Yeah, GHWB did describe Justice Thomas as empathetic…but he didn’t say that empathy is:
an essential ingredient for arriving at just decisions and outcomes
Of course none of that really matters since conservatives and Republicans aren’t going after her empathy, or her race, or her gender.
We are going after her on the basis of her not being fit to sit on the bench, she has had 5 of 7 cases overturned by the very same court that she hopes to be a member of. She shows a lack of respect for the Constitutional Separation of Powers which, taken to its logical end, shows a general disrespect of the Constitution.
On substance, in retrospect, she is a poor choice for the bench in general, none the less the Supreme Court.
It’s like we have our own home-grown crop of Puritans these days. Only without the work ethic. And the radical egalitarianism. And the fierce hatred of slavery and anti-Semitism. And, heck, the desire to eat a freaking piece of meat every so often:
GIVE up lamb roasts and save the planet. Government advisers are developing menus to combat climate change by cutting out “high carbon” food such as meat from sheep, whose burping poses a serious threat to the environment.
Out will go kebabs, greenhouse tomatoes and alcohol. Instead, diners will be encouraged to consume more potatoes and seasonal vegetables, as well as pork and chicken, which generate fewer carbon emissions.
I have my own suggestion for these people: you want to cut down on carbon emissions? Stop talking. Less talking, thus less need to breathe, thus less carbon dioxide being emitted. You could also try not going to extravagantly wasteful climate change conferences on jet planes, too. Just a thought.
On the bright side, I now know where I’m ordering lunch from.

PS: H/T: Instapundit, who also came up with a very pithy saying about this sort of thing: “I’ll believe that it’s a problem when the people saying that it’s a problem start acting like it’s a problem.”
