The President Has a Cocaine Problem…

President Zelaya that is.  Apparently everybody knows about this.

Every night, three or four Venezuelan-registered planes land without the permission of appropriate authorities and bring thousands of pounds … and packages of money that are the fruit of drug trafficking

Oh, and Zelaya wanted to legalize it too.

these seem like important things that people at the WH and State Dept. should be asked about, given their wont to meddle this time around.

The Netroots Goal Posts

Markos Moulitsas has made it extraordinarily clear that he believes that conservatism and the GOP are dead and buried for good. Now, he lays down his confident predictions for the next election cycle:

And in 2010, Dems will pick up another net 5-10 seats in the House and 3-6 seats in the Senate.

So, he’s on record. Let’s see how that works out for him.

re: In other news…

Crap. Moe stop it. I saw the headline and I was sure I’d missed the arrest of another Democrat. Crap.

In other news, they released Senator Byrd…

…from the undisclosed hospital where he was being treated:

After several weeks of hospitalization for a staph infection and recurring fevers, Senator Robert C. Byrd has been released and is recuperating at home, his office announced in a statement today.

The West Virginian Democrat, who turns 92 later this year and is the longest-serving senator, will continue to receive physical therapy at home. “I am pleased to be home in anticipation of celebrating our Nation’s birthday with my loving family,” his statement read. “I also thank everyone who sent me their good wishes and prayers.”

As someone noted to me privately: at his age, something like this means the Senator’s either recovered, or he’s dying. Policy differences aside, I hope the former, but a little more than suspect the latter.

Who needs Kyiv? We’ve got Seattle!

On Short-Lived Corporate Names

Once upon a time, the managers of the old HNG/Internorth Corporation (a gas pipeline company) felt the need to change its public image. It paid some advertising and PR guys to come up with one a new moniker, one of those corporatesque names that convey dynamic vitality, vision, etc.

They came up with Enteron. Terrific, huh? That lasted until somebody pointed out that “enteron” is actually a word in the English language, one that means “the alimentary canal”.

The smart guys sounded a lot like Nathan Thurm when they said, “We knew that. Everybody knows that.” After a few days, they quietly introduced the new, improved, vetted name, Enron.

With that as background, consider the name given to the new joint venture between Russia’s Gazprom and the national oil company of Nigeria.

All’s I’m sayin’ is, these guys better be paying a royalty to the estate of Tupac Shakur…

id and The Pirate Bay sell out

First id sold out, now The Pirate Bay goes, too.

Dizzying change on the Internet. The Pirate Bay can and probably will be replaced by some other group and its site if the new owners change things, but id? If id can no longer do its own thing, if John Carmack gets shackled, then that’s a permanent loss.

Last Remaining Lenin Statue in Kyiv Vandalized; Will Be Torn Down

I’ve been to Kyiv, and it’s a majestic, beautiful, historic city - as this walking tour shows.

One eye-sore, though, is the bizarre presence of one last statue of Lenin on a side street in Kyiv. Why that one remains is a mystery to me - it seems to only serve as a spot for the few remaining die-hard communists to hold occasional rallies.

Well, this morning brings joyous news from last night. The statue was vandalized - and will be torn down.

Dunno about you, dear reader, but this news sure made my day….

We Can Trash Knee-Cap and Trade In The US Senate (But We Have to Fight Like Leonidas)

Jay Cost predicts what I already believed true. Cap and Trade Legislation is potentially difficult to pass in The US Senate. He breaks down which Democratic Senators are possible defectors below.
Senators who face “significant pressure” come from states that voted against it and where most (or all) Democrats defected.

These Senators include: Bayh, Bird, Conrad, Dorgan, Johnson, Landrieu, Lincoln, Pryor, Rockefeller.

Senators who face “moderate pressure” come from states that voted against it, and with at least one Democratic defector.

These Senators include: Brown, Casey, Hagan, Specter, Warner, Webb.

Senators who face “slight pressure” either come from states that voted against it but with no Democratic defectors, or states that voted in favor but with at least one Democratic defector.

The Senate currently lines up 60-39 pro- Democrat. The GOP needs 11 out of 16 to win. This translates to 70% of the votes up for grabs. Assuming they hold their own caucus, this would require a better performance than we got in the House.

The GOP held 95% of its votes, which would translate to 37 out of 39 Senators. The Dems held 211 votes, which equalled 82% of their caucus. This would give them 48 votes in the Senate.

With 48 Dems and 2 Reps, Cap and Trade passes. This doesn’t have to happen, but it could if the GOP doesn’t get to work.
