McCain to Block “Cash for Clunkers” Bill

Trish Turner over at one of the Fox News blogs reports that Senator McCain will oppose any new authorization of funds for the “Cash for Clunkers” program.

We don’t get to say this all too often.  Thank you Senator McCain.

Cash for Clunkers program to be suspended

You still have until midnight tomorrow...

Cash for Clunkers program to be suspended, officials say

WASHINGTON — The government plans to suspend its popular “cash for clunkers” program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases, congressional officials said Thursday. …

The Transportation Department called lawmakers’ offices to alert them to the decision to suspend the program at midnight Friday. The program offers owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Rae Tyson, a spokesman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which administers the program, declined comment.

Congress last month approved the Car Allowance Rebate System program, known as CARS, to boost auto sales and remove some inefficient cars and trucks from the roads. The program kicked off last Friday and was heavily publicized by car companies and auto dealers.

Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns about large backlogs in the processing of the deals in the government system, prompting the suspension.

Can we have do-overs on the election?

Jefferson, Guilty or Not? Online Poll. [Repaired!]

Your choices are “Guilty on all counts”, “Not guilty on all counts”, or “other”. Not exactly your well-designed poll, but, as they say in the Crescent City, “Vote early and vote often!”

Mexico builds border wall.

And I’m forced to say to them, tiene razon.

Mexico builds border wall (language warning)

I hadn’t really realized how bad it was getting.

I oppose a second option here, too.

And I suspect that most people who read this site would agree.

PS: The mouseover text in the webcomic in question isn’t precisely an ‘option.’ More like a warning of potential consequences.

They postponed the Energy markup yet *again*.

After all that sturm und drang and haggling over the price on the Blue Dogs’ part, I just got told that the start of the Energy committee’s markup’s been delayed until at least tomorrow. 36/23 Dem/GOP partisan breakdown and Henry Waxman still can’t run a committee to save his life.

Alas, not being able to do the simplest legislative things will do little to destroy his career: the things that Beverly Hills voters find truly inexcusable have very little in common with the rest of the country, or indeed observed sentient life. And I include dolphins, orangutans, Border Collies, and several breeds of parrots in that category.

Go ahead, Blue Dogs : vote for it

With hugs and kisses from the NRCC

Whatever deal the Democrat leadership made to bribe or blackmail you into voting for BambiCare will not shield you from the wrath of your constituents, during both the August recess and next November’s election.

So go ahead. The NRCC has been very busy recruiting your replacement, and will be happy to craft their campaign advertising messages using your very own words from your 2008 campaign.

Oh, and Bambi remains at 49%. Don’t look for coattails, babe.

I think that it might even be worse then getting Wales*.

People are trying to get the perfect title for this story:

Patrizia D’Addario: Silvio Berlusconi offered me a seat in European Parliament

The prostitute at the centre of the sex scandal involving Silvio Berlusconi says that the Italian Prime Minister offered her a seat in the European Parliament.

…but I don’t know. There’s a certain simplicity to that, right there. Besides, I’m sure that if I actually read Italian I’d be rolling on the ground in response to these.
