In a rare two-way race between two members of a third party, a member of the Green Party is beating out a member of the Communist Party for a seat on the Cleveland City Council.

Apparently both the Green and the Commie are also Democrats; Kuchinich had shown the light of his countenance upon the latter, to no real effect (the Greenie won). Aren’t local elections fun? The people reading this should really get into their own…

Internet service providers may become legally responsible for scam web sites and spam that passes over their lines if a new piece of legislation, the Investor Protection Act, gets turned into law. The act, which passed through the House Financial Services Committee today, requires ISPs to filter fraudulent sites and emails that falsely claim to be from certain brokerage firms affiliated with the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) if the ISP is “aware of facts or circumstances from which it is apparent that the material contains a misrepresentation.” If the communications are not blocked, ISPs could be liable for damages.

This is incredibly stupid. We don’t hold the USPS liable for mail fraud. ISPs should be no different.

Investigators probing the death of a Kentucky census worker found hanging from a tree with the word “fed” scrawled on his chest increasingly doubt he was killed because of his government job and are pursuing the possibility he committed suicide, law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.

Two officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case, said no final conclusions have been made in the case. In recent weeks, however, investigators have grown more skeptical that 51-year-old Bill Sparkman died at the hands of someone angry at the federal government.

Obviously, the most important thing to find out here is the truth. I admit to a little concern here: if investigators are not finding evidence of a political motivation for the killing, it doesn’t necessarily follow that Sparkman wasn’t murdered. The circumstances of the man’s death always seemed at least a little ritualized; I’m hoping that the investigators are being very careful about not prematurely coming to a conclusion.
