Kosovo: Who are the good guys here? (Comments enabled)

By Neil Stevens

The word is that Kosovars are on the verge of declaring formal independence from Serbia with the support of the EU and, apparently, the United States.

Should I cheer? I can't tell which parties are trustworthy here. On one hand you have Serbia, a country that not too long ago was a party to genocidal activity in Bosnia, and probably has folk who wouldn't mind some 'ethnic cleansing' in Kosovo. On the other hand, Christians in Kosovo and their churches have been under attack since the region fell under NATO protection, and there's the suggestion of Islamic terrorists getting their way here.

Is it even possible for us to come up with a resolution here that one could cheer? I'm open to corrections here on any of my impressions above.

Islamic terrorism once for all. END of debate, PERIOD.

however, since they all seem to hate each other, it is probably best that they all separate. Some of the former Yugo republics are doing fairly well.

It's what the effects of US/EU recognition of Kosovo independence will have on a thousand other brushfire wars all around the globe. The precedent, and it will be a precedent despite whatever nonsense Condi Rice mutters about the subject, that outside states can rip off chunks of other nations at a whim will be used by China, Russia, and others to justify countless "humanitarian" wars of expansion and conquest.

I was infuriated but not terribly surprised when Clinton, Albright, and the rest of that imbecile brigade led America to war against a state that neither attacked nor even threatened to attack us. However, the continuance of that horrible policy by the "adults" in Washington now is just another data point in favor of looking beyond the GOP for another vehicle to advance traditional conservatism.

They've been randomly divying up "independent" states for ages according to their whims. Belgium exists mainly because everyone else wanted to hack off the Dutch. And, let's not forget the aftermath of World War One, where imperialists would have carved up Turkey like it was thanksgiving were it not for Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. I'm not even gonna touch Africa.....

In a scenario oddly reminiscent of World War One, Russia is again firmly on the side of it's "slavic brothers" in Serbia. This could get interesting...

The Serbs are not the bad guys by Land of Da Free

Slobodan Milosevic is to blame for all the problems of the Serbs. But Slobodan is now dead and gone, literally and figuratively. It is now time for the West to look at this situation more objectively.

Serbia is a fledgling democracy. It drove the socialists from office with a bloodless revolution in 2000. There has been a regime change. Serbia sent Milosevic to the Hague to be tried as a war criminal. He is the only former Yugoslav leader that paid for his crimes, while the Croats and Bosnian Muslim leaders should have been right there with him. The muslims in Kosovo, on the other hand, are involved in the drug trade, the gun trade and are linked with Al Queda and other terroist groups.

The charges of ethnic cleansing in Kosovo turned out to be unfounded. The claims were that Serbs had killed 100,000 Kosovars, or 250,000 if you are to believe Oprah. When the UN peacekeepers entered the country they never found the mass graves they were expecting. It's now estimated that about 3000 people died in the conflict - and how many of those were the result of NATO bombing is unknown. Compare that with the death and destruction in Iraq.

There are no Serbian suicide bombers, there are no Serbs attacking UN peacekeepers, there are no Serbs blowing up innocent people. The only people now being terrorized in Kosovo are the Serbs. There are no mosques being destroyed, only churches.

The Albanians in Kosovo already have their own country, it's called Albania.

The MSM can't get any stories right in this country. Do you really expect them to get something right in a region they know nothing about?

Serbs by GreatDarkSpot

The Serbs might not have done any ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, but they did in Bosnia so forgive me if I wasn't prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt. When you start wars with your neigbours without being attacked, I have no sympathy when they lose territory as a result - not Germany, not the Arabs in the Six Day War nor the Serbs. They behaved badly and paid the price.

That being said, it would not be smart for the Albanians to get to full of themselves, either. They are not exactly pure.

The Bosnian War began when the Muslims decided they wanted to gun down a family at a Serbian wedding. That's a fact that can't be argued away.

It was also the Serbs that were driven out of the Krajina region of Croatia while being fired upon by Croatian helicopters. I'm sorry you feel no sympathy for those people.

They also never "lost" the war in Bosnia. The Bosnian Serbs were sold out in Dayton, OH so Slobodan Milosevic could get a photo op with Bill Clinton. The Bosnian Serbs were not at the negotiating table.

The United States has the right to defend itself from radical Islam, so does Great Britain, so does Israel and so do the Serbs.

But most importantly, GreatDarkSpot, please translate the quote at the end of your comment so everyone here will know you advocate violence against the Serbs.

But as Saudi-sponsored terrorists have drifted into Kosovo, and churches and Christians have been burned, tortured, and raped while Western troops watched, there is a great deal of shame for our complicity in the post-liberation phase.

Bad idea. One of this administration's worst policies.
