Speaking of Apologies: Hypocrisy Clouds Democrats’ Demand for “You Lie” Apology

It’s time for Democrats to start issuing an apology or two of their own.

They’ve spent the past week clamoring for Congressman Joe Wilson’s apology, even though the President has accepted his apology, twice now.

While Democrats will not let up on Wilson, one person who needs to not just apologize, but step down, is Congressman Charlie Rangel. Revelations continue to show that he has ignored the country’s tax laws, which, as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, he is responsible for writing.

The Congressman continues to show his disregard for the law, and he should apologize, in addition to stepping down from his chairman position.

And many people agree with this belief. Exactly one year ago today, the New York Times called for Rangel to step down. Since then, others have called for his resignation, including the Washington Post, the Buffalo News and other Congressional leaders.

Yet Rangel refuses to step down, won’t even apologize for his tax wrongdoings, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to back him.

As a reminder of what Rangel should apologize for, here are a few assets Rangel has failed to disclose, which violate tax and Congressional rules:

  • A Merrill Lynch Global account worth between $250,000 and $500,000
  • Tens of thousands of dollars in municipal bonds
  • Between $30,000 and $100,000 in rent from a building he owned in New York
  • A checking account worth between $250,0000 and $500,000
  • Three vacant lots in New Jersey valued between $1,000 and $15,000
  • Stock in PepsiCo worth between $15,000 and $50,000
  • $10,000 in back taxes from rental income from a villa in the Dominican Republic.

Clearly, this is a broad range of disclosures, or lack thereof. And while everyone makes mistakes, this is an egregious list of violations that have been known about for a year now.

If a working American makes an honest mistake on their income tax, they pay penalties and interest along with their back taxes. But Chairman Rangel has paid just the outstanding back taxes he has admitted himself, and declared the matter closed, without paying a nickel of penalties or interest.

This is a blatant example of the kind of hypocrisy we have come to expect from Speaker Pelosi’s House of Representatives - a House of Hypocrisy.

Two Americas

livefreenh Tuesday, September 15th at 6:34AM EDT (link)

Philanderer John Edwards was right: we do live in Two Americas.

I live in the one where we follow the rules, or else. The other one is where they make those rules, but are exempt.

Maybe a simpler way to put it is this:

One America wants change, and the other America is a bunch of rich Democrats spending our money.

The law is really only useful if there are folks to follow it

Shortly after Wednesday’s incident, many articles referenced the non-partisan FactCheck.org that stated that illegal aliens would not receive benefits under H.R. 3200. The group has since revised its statement.

Republicans have a point here: More could be done to enforce the ban. But it’s worth remembering that, as a spokesperson for the American Immigration Lawyers Association told us, attempting to get a health care credit would have legal repercussions. “Making a fraudulent claim to an entitlement program when you’re not actually entitled to it would have serious consequences for any person,” the spokesperson told us, “but especially if it’s considered a false claim to citizenship, that would have serious immigration consequences that could ultimately lead to deportation.

Still doesn't work

This explanation still doesn’t satisfy the practicality of what will happen. The individual was already here illegally once. Will deportation prevent that person from illegally entering the country again? Also, at the point of legal ramifications, the consumption of health care services has already occurred. To claim that risk of deportation is enough disincentive to prevent unlawful utilization of health care entitlements needs a lot more evidence for me to buy into it.

Wilson already apologized and Obama accepted it. Pursuing this further is going to cause the issue to fester like “picking a pustulating scab” (heard on radio) and will become politically toxic for democrats. I hope they keep up nonsense like this because 1 year is still a lot of time to straighten up an minimize 2010 losses. So far, dems have shown no intention of doing so.

As an average American, I don’t understand why the laws are not being respected. We’re not just talking about rules here. Laws that would have the regular Americans, indicted and in court and maybe jail. I’d like to see the laws of the land followed by the members of Congress. Is this an FBI case?

Thank you Rep. Carter for what you are trying to accomplish. No easy task in the current situation.

I remember watching a speech you made on C-span

izoneguy Tuesday, September 15th at 9:08AM EDT (link)

Hello Rep. Carter,

I remember a few months back a speech you made that was on C-Span. I normally don’t watch C-Span but I was flipping through the channels I left it on C-Span and you just started making a speech about why things were going the way they are. You were talking a west Texas rancher who has fought for 40 years to make a living, fighting the weather, fighting the normal things that come up in running a business. And this rancher was asking how the people in Washington D.C. can just make rules that would result in the family losing the ranch. I can tell you why. It’s people like Charlie Rangel. Elite liberals who seem to be accountable to no one. Charlie Rangel & Barack Obama are ACORN. Now the Senate is final doing something about ACORN because a young 20 something filmaker was able to expose the corruption?

And now the house wants to punish a member because he yelled out the truth? Perhaps it was a bit disrespectful to the office of the president, but not to the man. Every US representative of government should be held accountable just as every US citizen is.
Why is it that if I am off by a few hundred dollars on an income tax return the full weight of the federal government come calling wanting a pound of flesh plus interest? Yet Charlie Rangel gets away with years of abusing the system and gets a slap on the wrist? Tell me when did the federal government workers become part of the mob?

If Joe WIlson is being hung out to dry for yelling “You Lie” then Charlie Rangel should be fired and at the very least held to account to the taxpayers for his ton of flesh.

What Joe Wilson should apologize for...

archer52 Tuesday, September 15th at 10:02AM EDT (link)

I’ve been thinking about this for a while. The Dems want to make an example of Wilson. I’m the type of person who takes being picked on poorly. I hope Wilson is of the same cloth. If he is this is his speech:

“Ladies and Gentleman of the House. I have been summoned here today to apologize. I thought about it a lot. What should a member of the House apologize for? What offense has been committed against the people of this great nation? Then I realized, in fact, an apology was in order, actually many apologizes are in order.

So, let me begin.

I apologize for being part of a body of men and women who have decided to chose politics and power over the good of the people.

I apologize for the members in this body that refuse to talk to or listen to their constituents because those citizens may disagree.

I apologize for members of this body who have taken bribes, graft and paybacks from lobbyists, special interest groups and others.

I apologize for the arrogance of certain members of this body who have the audacity to foist upon the public rules and laws they refuse to follow themselves.

I apologize for the members of this body who take advantage of every perk of the office and are more concerned about staying in power than doing the right thing.

I apologize to the American public for the ease of which your elected representatives lie to you.

I apologize for the members of this body who say you are stupid, liars, Nazis, and storm troopers just because you exercise your God given right to free speech.

I apologize for this body for all of the lies, accusations and attacks it leveled against the men and women of the military, law enforcement and our CIA who risked their lives keeping such ungrateful people like us alive.

Finally, I apologize for this body not having the courage and decency to take a long walk off a short pier and rid this great nation of such a burden as having to deal with a corrupt government which has managed to crawl into every aspect of the citizens’ lives in hopes of controlling them.

I’m sure there are many more apologies, but I can tell by the look on the House leader’s face, my time is up.

Rangel doesn't need to apologize.

As much as i do appreciate you expressing your displeasure with the way congress is chastizing Joe Wilson while turning a blind eye to Charlie Rangle here on RedState, you can do more. You need to speak to your fellow reps, get them to mention this hypocrisy on every national program you can. Perhaps CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC won’t give you the chance today, but eventually they will have to have members of the opposition party on. Perhaps it will be to talk about the healthcare debate, perhaps about social security, perhaps about cap and trade. But here’s the thing. If each of you just brings it up without being asked first, what can they do? Can they go to commercial? Can they just ignore you? And if they try to ignore you, will the people at home watching not hear your comments and beging to ask questions? Go on Rush, Hannity, Levin, Fox News, Glenn Beck, OReilly. Talk to your local papers. Write editorials. In essence… DO YOUR JOB!!! You see, the general public, the people you represent don’t get a voice on the floor of the house. That is what they have you for. Joe Wilson spoke up. Will you?

November 2nd 2010. What are you doing today to improve your tomorrow?

which is precisely what Obama is, such bad taste.
What have things come to when a Democrat can’t insult people to their faces, tell them to shut up, lie about the features of different pending bills, and do it all on the floor of Congress. Not that he and others of his party haven’t been doing it for months.

I would suggest that what goes on today in American hospitals across the country every day will, when the wash is hung out and done, continue as usual. The powers that be would not dare anger the appropriate pressure groups and their demented allies in the media.

Why, just imagine what the NY Times would say !

and thank you for supporting Joe Wilson. Charlie Rangel isn’t the only Democrat that owes many appologies, how about Harry Reid appologizing to Pres. Bush for calling him a liar and a loser? How about Jack Murtha appologizing to our Marines for calling them cold blooded murderers? How about John Kerry telling our youth to study hard or they will wind up in Iraq? How about Pelosi appologizing for calling some of the American citizens nazis? How about Napolitano appologizing for calling Conservatives right-wing extremists, and putting them on the list of domestic terriorists? How about Obama for running around the world appologizing for the evilness of the greatest nation on earth? How about the first lady saying that she was only proud of the US, after her husband became the rock star of the Liberals?

Please talk to Eric Cantor for me before the vote, and tell him one of his constituients is beginning to wonder if he hasn’t become McCain on training wheels. Please ask him to support Joe Wilson.

Why they demand an apology

anamericanidiot Tuesday, September 15th at 1:41PM EDT (link)

I think there is a clear strategic goal Speaker Pelosi is pursuing in demanding a House apology from Rep. Wilson. This has nothing to do with House rules or decorum. It has little to do with Obama. The Democrats want Wilson to apologize in front of those house cameras as part of Rob Miller’s campaign next year. This is more about helping Miller than anything else.

Don't forget Chris Dodd...

bobbyb444 Tuesday, September 15th at 1:54PM EDT (link)

While I vociferously applaud Sen. Wilson’s comment, and valiant attempt at free speech, I think perhaps a better forum might have been in order. Even though I dislike this president’s socialist agenda at the expense of capitalism, and the attitude of his staff and associative media, I do have respect for his office, and the congressional forum. Perhaps we are rising to the parapet of our predecessors in the English House of Commons (not a bad thought), but given that not many watched the president’s speech, Wilson could have reached millions more had he used the conventional media, say, the a.m. talk shows… In short, he has given voice and action to opposing views from the right. I understand Rengal’s dilemma, as well… but don’t forget Dodd’s swetheart deals, too. As a Connecticut resident,….I once offered several opinions to Dodd via email to his office. I was immediately taken aback by the unmitigated arrogance in the replies that confronted me (”…we don’t reply to any emails, we’ll get back to you when we can…”—even though they make it a point to state they have an email address for constituents—they could really give a damn)–and this is a true story…..He lost my vote then and there, and I will continue to do so until he is drummed out of office–not even his recent prostate cancer operation–I’m sorry, but likely a ruse (what everyone here is thinking but so afraid to say)—can garner a sympathy vote among my peers. A senator’s office should be held in highest regard, but Connecticut’s delegation is a laughing spoof, along with CT’s legislature, which mirrors the current Congress.
