MEMBER DIARY

The Way Forward

Today I join millions across our great nation in breathing a sigh of relief. We nearly are out of the era of bailouts, takeovers, entitlement expansion and big government. The American people have big expectations for a return to the nation our founders envision for us. The voters have entrusted Republicans to lead into a time of prosperity. In return, our promise is to work as hard as we can.

The American people may have passed a referendum on the Nancy Pelosi’s job-killing policies of the 111th Congress, but the Democrats’ term isn’t quite over. The existing Republicans need to stand their ground in the approaching lame duck session. I voted against adjournment this September because Democrats refused to pick up the issue of extending tax cuts. They were worried about facing their constituents. Instead they scurried out of Washington, thus providing uncertainly to small businesses and families. In the lame duck, current Republicans must do everything within our power to prevent Democrat tax hikes on January 1st. Our current tax rates need be extended for all Americans because higher tax rates equal more job losses. The American people must also maintain their voice after exiting the voting booth – they can put pressure on their Representative during this time through calls, emails, and letters.

The more damage we can prevent in the lame duck session, the less we will have to work to repeal in the 112th Congress as there is plenty on our plate already. I plan to start the new term by resubmitting my bill to repeal all 2,000 pages of Obamacare. My one-page, 41-word bill rolls-back the legalese, loopholes and massive liabilities in the health care overhaul. It will remove the trillion-dollar burden on the nation’s taxpayers.

As we work on repealing Obamacare, we can defund it. We will also work to remove the unconstitutional mandatory purchase requirement. This very condition is being tested in the judicial system by 21 states’ attorney generals. I have always said health care reform is needed, but instead the Democrat’s monstrosity, I will introduce commonsense proposals like the ability to buy across state lines and measures for tort reform.

The next undertaking can focus on getting our fiscal house in order. We will start by cancelling the unspent funds in the “stimulus” and directing repaid TARP funds be returned to the U.S. Treasury. Our national debt currently stands at $13 trillion which is up $5 trillion since Nancy Pelosi took the gravel. The new Majority will work to ease our debt burdens and not increase spending measures unnecessarily. Finally, we can pass legislation to audit the Federal Reserve – a measure supported by 320 representatives but ignored by Speaker Pelosi in the 111th Congress.

We also need to hold true to procedural reform called for by the American people. We should never have to pass bills, “to find out what is in them.” Instead, Members need to understand what they are voting on. Democrats promised they would post bills online before passage. Unfortunately, they didn’t keep their promise but now is our opportunity to bring real transparency to Washington. Next, unrelated bills should not be joined together. For example, a proposal like the federalization of the student loan industry should not have been attached with the health care overhaul. Finally, and most importantly, we need to verify every bill passed is truly constitutional.

Members of Congress must remember we represent the American people and we work for them. In January both returning and new members will swear to uphold the Constitution. It is my sincere desire that the Tea Party continues to hold us accountable. This is our chance, to save our republic and reform government. We can find fiscal stability, lower taxes, and fewer regulations to result in a limited government. Thank you, American people, for trusting us to return to our founding principles. We cannot let you down.

You forgot about Net Neutrality! The FCC is poised to reclassify the Internet in a brazen government takeover of the Internet. This MUST be forestalled by legislation. If government gets its dirty fingers into the Internet, the end will be at hand. Freedom of media is what is making this conservative resurgence possible.

Otherwise, sounds good, Rep. Bachmann! While you keep the faith in D.C., we’ll be out here laying the ground game for 2012 . . .

The house passed it earlier this year. Does that bill expire at the end of the session, or can the Senate vote on it next year? And can we prevent Reid from passing it using reconciliation like he did Obamacare?

    • scorpio0679

Pretty sure they could pass it in the lame duck session if they wanted to, but it didn’t have the votes before the election and it doesn’t have them now. Remember, they don’t even have 60 democrats anymore to overcome a filibuster, let alone even a majority who support cap and trade.

Congress needs to do something about that. I personally think EPA ought to be rolled back to its mission from 1976. That was enough to reduce or remove the massive amount of pollution that blanketed America at the time. The rules since then have had almost no measurable positive affect, but have put lots of employers out of business and driven manufacturing offshore, which is a big part of the reason why America has such a poor economy.

NLRB also needs to be reined in, for otherwise it will impose the EFCA with bureaucratic rulemaking.

I would hope that Congress also addresses the plague of bureaucratic rules. It is literally impossible for people to know all the rules that apply to them, and therefore the only way they can use the laws as a guide to their actions is to do nothing. Usually, but not always, doing nothing is legal. America needs risk takers. The plague of bureaucratic rules has shut most American risk takers down. The sum total of bureaucratic rules that apply to anyone should be no more than a few pages, perhaps 20 pages. The last number that I saw that applied to everyone was 10,000 pages. There is a lot of rules-repealing to do.

…Now, what about an across-the-board 20% reduction on the budget baseline, or a solid commitment to return to 2008 spending levels?

I absolutely LOVE the re-introduction of your Obamacare Repeal bill. It should be the first House Resolution of the new congress. And keep reintroducing and voting it out it until the President signs it, or we get a new President. Remember Churchill: Never, never, never surrender.

    • jdw4america

If the House keeps submitting the bill to the Democrat controlled Senate, and they bury it, the people will hold onto their outrage. And, if through some miracle, ole harry sends it to the White House, you know his majesty will veto it. Either way, it remains perfectly clear which party refuses to listen.

      • GregInFla

And we need to keep them aware of how their compadres faired after voting for Obamacare. I plan to keep my Sen. Nelson (D-FL) aware, and then vote him out.

        • onemovoter

In 2012 there are 20 of 33 Dem Senate seats up for election and quite a few are vulnerable.

          • GregInFla

Yes, 2012. Typos with letters are one thing; typos with numbers can really change a sentence’s meaning.

As a constituent in your 6th District, I cannot tell you how proud I am (and relieved) that you represent my family, my business, my town, my county, my district, my state. Your voice is a consistent and focused clarion call for conservative principles and the constitutional government that sprang from those principles. Without your voice and others like yours bringing the will of the people to Washington DC, I see now that our nation will fall to the evil of Leftism. We must fight to save our nation, and I am honored that you wave the flag of liberty and fire your formidable cannon of the First Amendment as my representative.

Thank you for all you do.

We wouldn’t need to be printing money the way we are if they’d done the right thing to begin with. Since they didn’t, rolling back and repealing Obamacare is a really good start.

  • belcatar

    Rep Bachmann,

I believe that you are sincere in your efforts to push back government. I hope that the new members of Congress are as committed as you are to this fight. Thank you for your efforts on our behalf.

    • http://itsaboutfreedom.proboards.com IronDioPriest

She’s been pushing back at intrusive and expansive government since the moment she got involved in state politics. Maybe before that, for all I know. Ms. Bachmann is the real-deal.

I share your hope – and a sprinkle of cautious confidence – that the new members of Congress heard our message, and are committed to the fight. We can rest assured that at the very least, Michele will be setting a good example for the new members to observe.

  • libertarianphilip

    Dear Congresswoman Bachman,
I enjoyed your letter. I really don?t know much about you however I do like what I have heard you say on Fox News. One thing I do know is that I really do not care for Chris Matthews. I am not sure which part of the Roman Catholic world you belong to however I belong to the one that uses Latin at mass. This is how I handle other Catholics who just need a little help. It is an excerpt from my diary “common desires through different ways’ . It’s not that good but that is where I got this from.

Repudiating a brother or sister Catholic.**

An entertaining but dangerous sport.. REMEMBER we are talking about God, Faith, and might be around people packing heat. I live in Texas (Dist.27). The example used here is Chris Matthews, popular MSNBC host. Adjustment must be used for each individual case. . May be used whole or in a part. A little can go a long way. Congresswoman Michelle Bachman sits in as a guest. Oh, yeah, this is how I really feel.

With due and great personal respect to Congresswoman Bachman and addressed to the audience of this body, I feel compelled to let everyone know of some facts.

The Catholic* Demographic is vast. Mr. Matthews and I do not reside in the same part of it. I do not question his Faith. I do not question that is he is a Roman Catholic in communion with Rome, as Patrick Buchanan, as am I. Our forms of worship are different and both are accepted by Rome. His is the more familiar, post Vatican II Novus Ordo Mass. I, to be brief, attend what is called ?Latin Mass? which is an older form of the Mass. It has been around a very long time. A serious concern about Mr. Matthews that I have had for quite some time now, concerns not his faith. It?s concerns his approach to it. His approach is very much in line with what is propagated by the US Conference of Bishops. In many American Catholic minds they are equated variously with the Left, Marxism, Liberation Theology, and other similar terms. Holy Mother Church tends to let the bigger kids run themselves plus she has had other concerns as of late. To sum this up quickly, I view Chris Matthews, not as badly but similar to, a group I have extremely strong misgivings about, the Kennedys of Hyannisport. I am not alone in this opinion. I have heard it in open discussion as well. I thank you all.

? My personal guidelines for myself on request.
**Please do not attempt in direct contact if you are not Catholic. Orthodox we know how you cross yourselves, so rehearse. High Church Anglicans can give it a try. For those who think they got it down, crossing oneself and spitting on the ground with varying degrees of intensity can be a very effective touch.

Well that?s pretty much it except that I wish you the best,
    Philip

    • Philip

      Dear Madame Congresswoman,
I would like to apologize for not realizing your denomination of Faith. I know what Holy Mother Church says and I do not deny her right to say it. My highest rule is the teachings of Christ, who has made no pronouncements on the Lutheran Church that I am aware of. My repudiation of Mr. Matthews still stands. I hope you do well. I wish you the very best and great success in the days ahead,
      Philip

We don’t need another, “Oh Jeepers we tried, we voted, but those nasty Democrats just wouldn’t let us.”

I suggest, instead, that you offer your 41 word bill as an amendment to every piece of legislation considered in the house.

Let us thereby identify every Republican who needs to get primaried in 2012. We will make it clear that any vote against the amendment is made at the peril of the member so voting.

I am frankly unsure why it is we, who want a much smaller government should fear a government shutdown. If we really believe in smaller government; a shutdown is exactly what we want.

We hold the cards if we but dare to play them.

Just please, please, PLEASE, don’t tell us repeal can not be forced upon them.

“The is no try, only do or do not.” Yoda

  • mikerazar

true conservatism calls for. I am especially supportive of her procedural changes. May I suggest going further and limiting the habit of Congress ceding power to the executive branch to make laws and regulations. The word “czar” should be banned from our lexicon. More aggressive sunsetting of new legislation would also be good.

  • http://barbershopvalues.com daconia

    Rep. Bachmann,
I am at a loss for words to express how highly you are respected. We are behind you all the way. Thank you.

  • rsexteriors

I appreciate you and support you

One thing I would advise agains is this part : ” We will also work to remove the unconstitutional mandatory purchase requirement.”

I think the democrats might jump at the chance to remove the mandate for the following reasons:

    (1) It will remove one of the major objections that their liberal base has
    (2) It may help them with the court cases because they can say that the bill no longer has a mandate to purchase and therefore the case in moot”.
    (3) Removing the mandate without getting rid of the whole bill will just raise costs and they will blame the Republicans for that in 2012.

Just my opinion, but I would say do your best to repeal the whole stinking bill and let the Senate Liberals decide if they want to Vote FOR IT again and if not then let Obama veto it and pay for it in 2012.

Let the court cases move through the judicial system. If the court strikes down the individual mandate then the whole bill should implode.

I applud your desire for real change, but it may not happen unless you first
reform campaign financing. Voting people out only works if you don’t let the lobbyists bribe the newbies.

They are refusing to seat Mark Kirk until December … OTOH, Joe Manchin and Chris Coons will be sworn in next week.

Part of the reform that must take place in this new congress is a change of leadership. I sum up my reasoning like this. We can play nice now that we as conservatives have shown our muscle but this party MUST place people in leadership positions that show that the PARTY has gotten the message.

Who better than Michelle Bachman can speak from our hearts about our concerns and our goals. These statements that our goal should be to make Obama a one term president misses the point and mearly makes us look partisan, Our goal should be the repeal of this new entitlement program that hurts small businesses, and a commitment that taxes will not be raised for anyone,

When I hear politicians frame tax conversation in terms of “extending the tax cuts” they miss the point. This is not about tax cuts this is about tax increases, At this point in the economic mess that was created by a free spending Republican President and then made worse by an out of control socialist government in the House, the Senate and the White House, we cannot afford tax increases. And that is what this discussion is about: TAX INCREASES! It is not about tax cuts as the pundits try to frame it,

    Go Michelle! Majority Whip!

  • Spartan4Life

Why? Because it will just extend for two years the uncertainty businesses and households are currently experiencing which is providing a drag on the economy. Everyone will just assume taxes are going up in two years.

Why not propose a simpler and flatter tax structure and make it permanent? Fix corporate taxes, dividend taxes, estate taxes, and capital gains taxes and make it permanent.

  • Spartan4Life

There are $1T of corporate earnings sitting offshore that will not return to the US due to onerous corporate tax rates. By providing an incentive to re-patriate those earnings we would be providing an immediate stimulus to the economy at no cost to the taxpayers. This seems like a no brainer to me.

Rush said today that conservatives cannot answer questions based on false premises, but instead keep putting out the message. Great job, Michelle! I think Rush had you in mind when he said it.
