From the diaries by Erick
It was a bright and happy December day. Not a cloud was in sight, the weather was a balmy 60 degrees and Congressman Parker Griffith wanted to give Speaker Nancy Pelosi a Christmas present. It wasn’t the infamous “Mental Health Ticket” that he once offered to have Santa put under her tree. He has switched his allegiance from Democrat to Republican. He had several things to say about this yesterday as he prepared to celebrate Christmas at home.
“I believe our nation is at a crossroads and I can no longer align myself with a party that continues to pursue legislation that is bad for our country, hurts our economy, and drives us further and further into debt,” Griffith said as his wife Virginia stood by his side.
Griffith, a former Radiation Oncologist, also offered a damning description of the House Version of Obamacare.
“I want to make it perfectly clear that this bill is bad for our doctors,” he said. “It’s bad for our patients. It’s bad for the young men and women who are considering going into the health care field.”
Parker Griffith will not be a shoo-in for reelection. The Republicans in Madison and Huntsville would probably choose Barack Obama over Griffith in a Pepsi Challenge. The Good Doctor’s reputation in Republican circles is toxic like the streams flowing near Chernobyl.
The Republicans also didn’t have a vacancy sign out for candidates to represent Congressman Griffith’s district. Steady and conservative local politician Mo Brooks had already started his plans to unseat Griffith soon after The Stimulus passed. Brooks, like Parker Griffith, has done Northern Alabama politics for decades. He doesn’t need the Heritage Foundation to do his opposition research.
Mo Brooks’ most significant hurdle may not be Parker Griffith’s Incumbency. Local Attorney Les Phillips has also thrown down the gauntlet. I’ve heard Phillips speak and I’ve Brooks speak. If Phillips were helping someone sue me, I’d make the best deal possible, early on in the process, before Mr. Phillips applied the Handy-Vac to my bank account.
Neither Brooks nor Phillips have any intention of suspending their campaigns. They eagerly await polling data to determine whether Parker Griffith stands anywhere above Andrea Dora level in terms of political popularity. Unless something totally unlikely emerges, Parker Griffith will have to earn the GOP nomination.
Griffith’s problems with his new base are profound and of his own making. He does nasty the way Southerners skilled in the verbal arts do nasty. Take my word for it, it’s nasty.
One of his frequent victims is a local talk radio host named Dale Jackson. If you listen to Jackson’s show during your morning commute across the Tennessee River Valley, you can’t go three days without the irrepressible Jackson playing two of his favorite quotes. One is from Griffith himself and one is from one of Parker Griffith’s former Democratic surrogates.
In the typical Mouth of Sauron fashion of political hacks, a member of Griffith’s entourage declared Dale Jackson “The King of Huntsville HATE Radio!” Jackson loves this. He loops it some days with the reverb on high. The only thing missing is a suitable thrash-metal track blaring cacophony in the background.
Griffith has been no more civil to Jackson in his own right. Jackson attempted to ask him about his relationship with Speaker Pelosi. At that point, Congressman Griffith still played a Democrat in his public appearances. He grew exasperated with Jackson and made the following remark. “Now Son, your just an entertainer.
Griffith’s district doesn’t bode well for his future either. It went 61% for John McCain in a year with record-breaking African American turnout and voter loyalty to the Democratic Party. Madison County and Decatur like their Democrats on the half-shell. He will have one heck of a sales job convincing anyone he bleeds GOP red.
In defense of Parker Griffith, he has amassed a voting record to the right of anything ever put together by Arlen Specter, Lincoln Chafee or Olympia Snowe. He voted “No” on Cap and Tax, Obamacare, Stimulus, and tried his best to stop the missile defense withdrawal from Eastern Europe. This has about a 5% chance of being a party switch of conviction.
But, as Dale Jackson and others have chronicled time and again, Griffith has a long and illustrious history of talking right and then using a procedural dodge to skewer Conservative causes at the last minute. As a State Senator in Montgomery, he famously talked up a hard-core anti-immigration bill until it was time for his senate committee to mark it up. Then, Griffith and some other Democrats missed the session causing the absence of a quorum. The bill thus died a procedural death and Ted Mattle’s Ghost can tell you what happened next.
Griffith may be genuine in his disdain for Speaker Pelosi. It sometimes takes a professional relationship gone to heck to make us wise up and see the facts before us. Pelosi’s contempt for The Blue Dog Democrats was far more pronounced and icy than that of Harry Reid in The Senate. With some people personal interaction can inform or even supersede ratiocination. It was clear Congressman Griffith felt a certain culture shock in opposition to Speaker Pelosi.
Thus Parker Griffith has changed parties and decided to run as a Republican. He will spend the next few months trying to win over skeptics and ride the tiger. His primary fight may make him regret his new Conservative apotheosis. I’m very skeptical that this man is for real, but consider this particular piece of duplicity on his part a positive sign regarding the results of the 2010 midterm elections.

My dad had the same SKEPTICISM against Reagan when he switched from D to R in the 60s.
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Wednesday, December 23rd at 8:14AM EDT (link)But I believe in my Dad.
If a Dem decides to become an Rep and further strives to understand the principles of Reps and Conservativism,, that Dem will have a great potential to become A VERY POTENT FIGHTER AND DEFENDER of Republicanism and Conservatism..
I hope that Griffith will follow that path. He has 8 months to prove his worth.
I hope the people of his district in Alabama will at least try to have an open mind about Griffith.
We have to help him in assimilating Conservatism,, which is not a difficult task. After all, Conservatism is really unabashed Americanism. in so many ways.
Why "help him assimilate"?
Warrior (Diary) Friday, December 25th at 10:29AM EDT (link)I live in the 5th District and we know all about Parker Griffith. He didn’t just pop out of a cake. So, why wait for him to figure out something the rest of us have known for quite some time?
Besides, we have no dearth of qualified Republicans who don’t need the wrath of Queen Nancy to fall on them to know what’s up in the first place. Parker Griffith can learn about conservativism from the privacy of his own home.
One thing’s for sure, this charlatan sure can tell which way the wind is blowin’…it’s really is heartwarming to have an opportunist like Griffith confirm that the times, they are a changin’…

We don’t need more Republicans. We need more conservatives. Mr Griffith needs to establish that he is the latter. To assert the former is as easy as—well, about as easy as picking up a Nobel Peace Prize these days (A Texas automotive facility is currently offering a free one w/every oil change!).
Welcome to the table, Congressman. Now, prove your worth.
Well said..
soljerblue Thursday, December 24th at 5:00PM EDT (link)Griffith will have a tough row to hoe proving his conservative bonafides with the record he has in Alabama-5. But I add one other thought that may have been a factor in his decision — other than the culture shock a southerner feels when first immersed in DC politics.
Parker won his seat by 51 percent — skin of the teeth, almost, while his district went for McCain by 61 percent. North Alabama folk also know that Colbert County, in the 5th District, went for “W” in 2004 — the first time that county had voted Republican for a president since the Civil War. At that time, I discussed the matter in an interview with the top political scientist and election watcher at the University of Alabama. In talking about the steady shift of Alabama politics to the right of center, he predicted an eventual Republican takeover of the legislature — long a Democrat bastion. No sooner did Griffith arrive in DC than his old legislative went Republican in a special election. I speculate that Griffith, pondering all the foregoing and considering his baptism of fire in DC, felt he had no choice but to switch. I don’t think it was ideological at all, but simply practical, survival political strategy.
Out of the frying pan — maybe into the fire next year.

onyon43 Wednesday, December 23rd at 12:17PM EDT (link)If the proof is in his actions, isn’t his voting record thus far indicative of “actions”? If the above points are correct, he voted against all of the major monstrocities this political session. Now, to be clear, I don’t know Parker Griffith from Adam, and I have never been to Georgia (though I hear it is nice, and would like to go), let alone meddled in Georgia politics, but I would say that we should allow him the benefit of the doubt, given his actions, that he will vote for the good team. Also, I think he would make a strong advocate (along with Coburn) as to WHY the Health Care bill making its way into our doctor’s appointments is bad for Health Care (you know, the supposed point of the bill).
Also, didn’t he win the district he is currently representing? His chances of winning the district, even when 61% voted for John McCain, seem to sound like he is safe in his district. It also sounds like he could run as an independent, and win. This might be one of the districts that we want to secure “R” because he is the most-likely to win. If his voting record is what the article says it is, no sense in pissing him off and chasing him back to the Dems.

GOP84 (Diary) Wednesday, December 23rd at 12:16PM EDT (link)Give the guy a break, he’s abandoning the Dem money flow to follow his convictions. Are we conservatives/Republicans now the party that eats its young? I know this site hates Romney, but come on. Look at Reagan, Richard Shelby, and others who have switched to the GOP.
I know people who have worked with Griffith and they say he’s the real deal: a true conservative. Keep in mind that his spot was originally held by a Democrat. He won as a Democrat in spite of the fact that his district went over 60% for McCain. There’s no guarantee that changing parties will translate into re-election, as you said. So I applaud his decision.
And Mo Brooks? You’ve got to be kidding me. The guy didn’t have a prayer to begin with. As a fellow (I’m assuming you’re from Alabama) Alabamian, I have to say, ease up. Parker Griffith isn’t even as bad as Bobby Bright (my Dem congressman, who I never voted for). Tossing out skepticism and throwing cold water on a decison that should make us rejoice leaves a bad taste in everybody’s mouth.

wolfeman Thursday, December 24th at 8:19AM EDT (link)I always have to comment whenever I see someone who thinks Richard Shelby is a good conservative. Let me remind you that he voted for the Omnibus spending bill earlier this year and then voted for the dems 1.1 trillion with a T spending bill this month which broke a republican fillibuster that would have probably delayed the health care vote until after Christmas. He broke that fillibuster to get his coveted earmarks in the bill. This makes him no better than Harry Reid. ( buying votes with pork ) He’s wasting our money and spending our children and grandchildren into slavery as bad as any democrat in Washington. I’m all for giving Parker Griffith every chance in the world to prove he’s a true conservative. If you ask me Shelby failed that test and he’s the one that should be sent packing next year.

His ethics as a physician were in question during the entire campaign. It’s only because he had the endorsement of the Huntsville Times and the local Dem machine that he won anything.

Yet you give this only a 5% chance of being conviction switch? Not getting that. But what matters is how he voted. And he got all the big votes right as a democrat!

Unfortunately, our infatuation with him was short-lived…as it will be for Griffith if he is returned.

Rod_Patrick – Griffith has FIVE months to prove his worth. The GOP Primary is June 1 , 2010 (AL has open primaries).
Dr. Griffith got hit with lots of mud slung by the NRCC in the last election. Hospital documents surfaced implying that he inflicted “unwarranted pain and suffering” on his cancer patients. Just in case GOP voters don’t remember, the Democrats have already started running those old GOP attack ads.
Griffith didn’t have to face rumors of adultery, wife-swapping, or office affairs during the last election. Now that he’s a GOP, his former Democrat friends are ensuring that the people have a right to know these things.
Griffith does have money and the mighty power of incumbency going for him. His campaign already has much more money than Brooks or Phillip combined.
